You are right, if you ask me about why the coarse edge push cuts, plus an edge that is close to burr-free and property apex should push cut on a 3x90°. Crossing the scratch pattern also helps a lot to get the edge with less of a burr. Nice work!
Thanks! Its only recently that I've been able to get such high crossgrain pushcutting ability off of coarser stones. I can now get an apex off an Atoma 1200 that has no trouble push cutting newsprint crossgrain, meanwhile I don't think I could have done it with a gun to my head a year ago.
Great video, how many passes and what angle for burr removal? How many passes to reset main bevel without forming another burr? I know each knife and stone is different, I just want to know your thinking.
This pretty much debunk the myth often stated on many forums that coarse edge can't be sharp or push cut. I really like edges from this India stone, very useful and balanced.
An edge can be made extremely sharp at very coarse finishes, all the way down to ~100 grit, however I will say that the apex was only barely able to pushcut newsprint across the grain off this stone. Off of something like an Atoma 1200 it is much easier, and it is easier still to get an apex that trivially does crossgrain pushcuts off a DMT EF. Really, it all should depend on the ratio of slicing work to push cutting work you plan to do with that specific knife. The greater the amount of slicing work relative to push cutting, the coarser a finish you should use and vice versa.
Yeah, it's the 11.5" version. I originally bought it to try to use the coarse side for thinning out primary grinds before I discovered that a coarse Crystolon was dramatically faster at low force.
hello, sorry for the beginner question, but i cant decide between 'spyderco medium' and this 'india fine' or 'arkansas hard' i have dmt coarse and i want a stone that is a bit finer can india fine get a 1000 or 1500 grit finish?
Thanks Drake, always interested in your work. Wish you would come around more often now.

Great video, man! Keep ‘em comin
Nice work! What size stone is that? It looks huge!

You can see the micro-serrations working on this knife:
