The second part of this item holds the true problem: people treat clothes shopping as a pass time. They don't buy clothes because they need them. They wear it a couple of times, and then they need a new shopping fix. We need to stop consuming in a society where consumption is worshipped.
I admit I was fashion conscious as a teenager.. But now I'm older ..I tend to have my wardrobe kitted out with just several items. I barely go shopping for clothes... Just a few smalls, once or twice yearly... And the odd pair of shoes if my old pair is completely unsalvageable.. I've still got a pair of jeans I wore in the nineties . It must be an age thing ...to merely wear clothes that we find ourselves comfortable in rather than treat ourselves to the latest items .. If fashion often does a turnaround and come back in .. Why do they get rid of billions worth of clothes when they could store it all and recycle them in shops once the styles come around again ..
Use your cloth for you, pass it on to your brother, to your cousin and when the holes r too big to fill, use it for moping your cars. That's what we follow. Maynot be by choice always, but to cut costs it has helped generations.
Government action alone is not enough. Only total rejection of consumerism and the fashion mentality can solve this. Stop buying the fashion industry's products.

In Kerala, most people, of both genders, used to wear and still prefer white cotton clothes. Mundu or a long piece of cloth wrapped around waist which reaches upto the ankles, and shirt or Juba for males and Mundu and Neriyathu, which resembles a two piece sari, both white with small borders of colour for women. It was suited to our tropical climate. There was no need to colour fabrics also. Clothes used to be washed with plant based products and spared one the need to stock up too much. In fact most people owned only 5 or 6 pairs of mundus and tops. That was enough. My father was a govt official who then became a socialist leader. He owned only 6 pairs. Kerala's famous singer K J YESHUDAS once said he started wearing white because he was poor. By wearing white always, people couldnt tell how many clothes he owned. Then he went on to become a successful singer. Very rich. But he stuck to the policy of wearing only white. People should reclaim some of the old habits, to live in harmony with nature. The urge to impress others and show off should be resisted. We need to do this much for mother nature and ourselves.
Assamese people too wear white clothes and even prefers white cars.but suddenly the transition overpowered assamese woman and began to follow ekta kapoor soaps an lo everone became colorful like north indians.u cannot do anything.simply sit and laugh and shed tears at a corner at the loss of culture.
I never throw away old and worn down clothes - I either do one of the three: 1. Give them away to poorer relatives 2. Patch up tears on shirts and pants 3. Tear them apart and use the pieces as cleaning rags and wipes
As someone who likes fashion, I have decided to buy less clothes and when I do, I try to purchase items I think will last for a while, so that I won't have to buy new items along the line. Here are a few things you can do to minimise your own footprint: 1. Have a look in your wardrobe. Cleaning it out make you find some clothes you have forgotten about altogether. 2. Buy second hand. Older clothes are often made of better quality materials and are more designed to last. Plus, vintage is actually pretty fashionable. 3. See if your older relatives still have some old clothes somewhere in the attic. Again, they might still be in good shape and vintage can be really fashionable actually. 4. Exchange clothes with your sisters, cousins or friends. Organise a little party where you just bring clothes. Maybe something doesn't fit anymore or you are just tired of it, but it may still be in good shape and to someone else, it is like having something new. 5. Learn how to sew clothes. While the fabric you'll be using isn't sustainable per se, it does cut out the manufacturing process which is another huge problem in the clothing industry. Also, learning how to repair or amend clothes will keep you from throwing them away. 6. Normalise wearing the same item twice!

Fast fashion is the real shit. Rest buy good quality clothes so that they last long. Many countries have stores which even let individuals rent formal party wear clothes and thrifting clothes help a lot.
I used to work in the clothing industry and we shipped at least 4-6 full containers of unsold clothes to South America and Caribbean every year. Fashion industry is completely wasteful.
I have been buying “lightly used designer wear” far before it became popular. Most even with the tags still on. I always liked knowing I was doing my part to save the planet, nice to see my things are so valuable now too. Gucci is always fashionable.

You have got your facts right but 'fashionability' vs 'sustainability goes deeper than what you have covered. Sustainable fashion is no longer a matter of choice. We must embrace sustainable fashion to be able to preserve our resources for future generations. You can subscribe to sustainable fashion by supporting indie eco-labels (some of whom are doing yeomen work in this niche), practising the 3-4 R's, looking for certifications like GOTS, Oeko-Tex, SEDEX, buying artisan-made. After all, sustainble fashion is not only about the environment but also about the communities. You have taken a step in the right direction, hope this conversation continues...

Wow, I am really shocked. This has been a very informative, important and interesting video. That really bothers me that it takes so much precious water just to produce very few clothing items. Maybe it would help if we would wear uniforms or the same clothes practically everyday? Oh, but then someone might say "Oh, you wear the same clothes everyday bud". It seems like a battle where you just can't win? What can we do?
I read it somewhere, the most sustainable clothes you have are already in your wardrobe. Don't buy new, up-cycle your old garments. Fashion is not what Celebs are wearing, it's what you create! Create your own fashion. Support Slow Fashion.

I remember when I was growing up my parents (and then myself) bought clothing brands on the basis of how well they were made and which were advertised for their durability. Now its fashionable to spend a lot of money on jeans that look like mine did after a motorbike accident. WTF
H&M, Zara, all these fast fashion companies produce such low quality cheaply made, slave factory labour, pollution clothes. There should be a law banning polyester and polyester blended fabrics and only support materials that can easily break down and be recycled
So right! People just don’t know much about fabric. Polyester is PLASTIC, people. I really lose my mind when I see handbags or shoes advertised as “vegan leather”. It’s plastic.
@@missmayflowerTrue. You don't save live of a cow as cows are killed for meat anyways. You just add to plastic pollution. Not to mention the fact that such leather is less durable. And why aren't uppers of sneakers made out of cotton or linien too? Very good materials.

The second part of this item holds the true problem: people treat clothes shopping as a pass time. They don't buy clothes because they need them. They wear it a couple of times, and then they need a new shopping fix. We need to stop consuming in a society where consumption is worshipped.
True.. Very True
True
Use your cloth for you, pass it on to your brother, to your cousin and when the holes r too big to fill, use it for moping your cars. That's what we follow. Maynot be by choice always, but to cut costs it has helped generations.

Her traditional Indian clothes is the answer for sustainable clothes...
I never throw away old and worn down clothes - I either do one of the three:
1. Give them away to poorer relatives
2. Patch up tears on shirts and pants
3. Tear them apart and use the pieces as cleaning rags and wipes
As someone who likes fashion, I have decided to buy less clothes and when I do, I try to purchase items I think will last for a while, so that I won't have to buy new items along the line.
Here are a few things you can do to minimise your own footprint:
"Aparigraha" is the only option as an individual

I wear my clothes until they are worn out. This is my lifestyle, partly out of childhood upbringing where we didn't have much money to buy new clothes and partly for my current choices of living a minimalistic life
Fast fashion is the real shit. Rest buy good quality clothes so that they last long. Many countries have stores which even let individuals rent formal party wear clothes and thrifting clothes help a lot.
Fashion fads are ever changing..
While they look good on Instagram handles..
Minimalist and comfort makes a longer run…
