I met him in 1980, I was only 9 years old at the time and I spotted him in a park in London with a group of his friends, my mum approached him as I was too shy to and he was the complete opposite of what he portrays himself to be in the limelight, he shook my hand and said of his appreciation of someone as young as I was at the time recognising him.

Beneath this abrasive image lies a man who cared for his wife, right through her battle with dementia, until the very end. Respect is earned…..and, for what it’s worth…he has mine.
Not necessarily. Seems a bit narcissistic and self-important. If a person only cares about their own opinion of themselves, seems like a bit of a defense mechanism to avoid being hurt by what other people say. Because sometimes what other people think of us is actually valid, and sometimes the truth hurts. Doesn't mean we have to care what EVERYONE thinks. There is an intelligent balance to be struck between not being overly worried about whatever everyone thinks and not caring what anyone thinks.
To go through life, expressing exactly how you feel not giving a fuck about popular opinion, in an articulate, intelligent manner, is something we can all aspire to.
Yes, unfortunately John has never reached that point. He does give a fuck about popular opinion, which is why he has maintained the arrogant, edgy, angry public persona, even when he matured, sorted his life out, and mellowed out.

@@sally-annewatson2627 It's important to remember that our perceptions of public figures like Johnny Rotten (John Lydon) are often shaped by the media's portrayal and limited glimpses into their lives. While John Lydon, may have displayed disagreeable and rude behavior in his early career and to a lesser degree recently, it's crucial to approach such judgments with caution. People can change and evolve over time, and the context in which we see them may not fully capture their true personality or struggles. It's also worth noting that public personas and stage personas can be quite different from a person's true self. Regarding whether John Lydon's behavior could be indicative of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), it would not be appropriate for me to make a clinical assessment without a proper evaluation. In summary, while John Lydon may have had a contentious public persona, it's important to approach our judgments with an understanding of the complexities of human behavior and the potential for growth and change over time.
@@sally-annewatson2627 You've already shown the mileage to indicate you have a good understanding of what Lydon is about, at least in his publicly expressed personas over the years. He SAYS he called him out. He didn't do a very good job of it since Sir Jimmy carried on noncing til his natural death, as a beloved national character and knighted OBE. I hope Johnny calls me out as some sort of evil character, I might win the lottery.
@Night Rider I remember Bill Wyman dating Mandy Smith, who was 13 while he was 44, being in all the papers. This was in the mid-1980s. People generally seemed to feel sick about it. I think there were a lot of people wondering why he wasn't in jail. But for some reason he wasn't punished. This is a much later example than in the 1960s and 70s, but I suppose back then the age gap wasn't as far, since the offenders were younger, and it was more seen as being distasteful but consensual, a mortal meeting their idol, rather than an adult harming a child by psychologically manipulating them. It was portrayed as "naughty", "rock and roll excess", as if we all would secretly be raping 14 year olds if we could get away with it. But then, as now, it was only a small minority who actually found kids attractive. It's the bloody media, isn't it? A bunch of extremely questionable, professional liars and bullshitters, who have their agenda in mind first, and then set out to arrange the facts and "facts" around the story they want to write. Why does anybody read the papers? Why do "opinion" columns exist? Can't we just ask our friends and acquaintances about their opinions? Why always some agenda-pushing sinister old arsepiece telling us what to think, creating the narrative line for us to follow to their conclusion like a fish being caught? What's wrong with the media, but more importantly what's wrong with people that we let them exist?

You cant hate rock music from a conceptual standpoint, even at the time of that interview the genre had already become all-encompassing to the point that there is rock music for any type of person.
That comment probably would have made Rotten laugh with Tom instead of at him (I like Tom). Maybe Rotten would also have thrown a "Depends on how much they're offering" follow-up to Tom.
I can't figure out a way to start a conversation with this guy: Me: Hello, I am Jacob. How are you? Johnny: Oi doun fockin' care..nun of yo fockin' biznis. Me: Outclassed
I respect him for saying how other people choose to exist does not concern him, but it would concern me if their behaviour infringed on how I, or others choose to live.
Saying that he is disappointed about his lack of success is an awfully ignorant statement. He could of continued doing Sex Pistols at any point in his life and made big money, but he chose to completely mix it up and push musical envelopes. Don't know where you are getting your information
Both his parents were from Ireland , his wit, wisdom , and sarcasm is very Irish, but the real John Lydon got left behind over 40 yrs ago around the time that the Sex Pistols started to get press coverage.
No because he’s not calling people and women shitty, derogatory names. He’s being himself but not being cruel and bigoted to others. There’s a difference between being outspoken and independent and being an asshole with no filter.
@@edl6398 it's called a reality check, we need more brutal honesty, such as telling parents that "no your 5 year old doesn't identify as a fucking non binary carrot" and telling men "throwing on a dress and calling yourself a women doesn't make you a woman"

This is about your insecurity and a changing world that makes you feel less important than you were when only guys like you were in charge. You are a dinosaur.
@@kevinmorrice I'm sure Jonny would be more in favour of people wearing what they want and being who they want, rather than taking your position of telling people how they should live.
He has been punched by a music host once. The interviewer was Molly Meldrum. Apparently as the story goes, Molly introduced himself to Rotten, he flicks a lit cigarette at the cameraman, hitting him in his eye, and so Molly king hit him...
Some of these were definitely not examples of him "outclassing" anyone. Particularly the one where the interviewer at the award ceremony calls him out for being a hypocrite. All he could do was get petulant and play the "I'm famous and you're not" card. That's not winning the argument. That's pretty fucking weak tbh. He looked like a fucking tool in that clip.
@offworldresident Except that's a sociological question, and John Lydon never made any claim to being a sociologist. Why should he pretend to have an expert opinion on the inner workings of the younger generation? As for the awards ceremony, his response was fair enough. If the interviewer thought it likely that his opinion of awards ceremonies had changed, she clearly didn't know who she was talking to.
Did you notice that those people were insufferable? Yeah, Johnny is not always on his A-game, especially as he gets older, but there's nothing wrong with showing disdain for those idiots. Are you, perhaps, from California?
I believe the main thrust of what he said is he's in a position to do whatever he wants to do. The implication is if he wants to go to an awards show he goes. It seems to me his consistently expressed philosophy is that he does what he wants to, and he doesn't care what people think. This always gives him a pretty convenient out because no matter what he does, the only way to hold him to charges of hypocrisy is to argue he's not actually doing what he wants to do, but that would require knowing what's going on inside his head better than he does. Basically she's walking up to him and telling him he doesn't really want to be there, and how the f would she know? Or she's just uninformed about what he's actually been saying all along. If your version of punk or counter culture requires so much purity that a person must never be doing something society wants them to, that is actually an even more rigid rule than the freedom within mainstream culture, i.e. always having to break the rules is itself a rule that constrains you from just doing what you want to. That's the joke with the goths on Southpark right?: All the "normal" kids get to wear all different colors, but to be a goth you *have* to wear black - the social norms of the supposed counter culture movement are actually more rigid than those of the culture itself. Everyone can end up trying to be different in exactly the same way, which is just another flavor of conformity. The question of whether or not to attend an award shows for John doesn't seem to me to be a question of "is it punk rock to go?" or "is it punk rock not to go?", but rather "if I want to go I go, and damn any rules that try to tell me what to do and any reporters who come along trying to enforce them" and I think that's pretty great.

Not necessarily. Seems a bit narcissistic and self-important. Because sometimes what other people think of us is actually valid, and sometimes the truth hurts. Doesn't mean we have to care what EVERYONE thinks.

Well there is a reason for Axl Rose and it is his psychosis, he has been clinically diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Contrary to what I said, I think Lydon puts on a bad boy act cause it fits with the image he has built for himself being one of the biggest named in the punk rock scene. Also one of my good mates met him a few years ago and said that Lydon is actually a pretty cool guy whos good to his fans and just one of those people you can sit down and have a beer with when chatting to him which just goes to show that the media really perpetuates a lot of false information about almost anything under the sun.

Even Australia's campest music presenter, a bloke called "Molly", can chin Johnny Rotten any day of the week. Straya!

Also the "I'm older than you therefore I'm right" card. Pathetic.
