Also if you're in the supermarket and someone is blocking the milk cabinet door, for a long time, you just stand there and wait until the other person is done, so you don't have to ask them to move over a bit.

And when they notice you standing there, they will move out of the way with a vague "Oh sorry, I didn't see you" and a nervous laugh.

    • @Hansen710

Nope. you say "jeg smutter lige foran"
Most people will run away scared of interacting with you without getting what they came for.
And if they dont you get the plesure of pushing them polite away while you step in front of them
And i will also move infront of the persons trying to make a angry face while queuing
I will just be making a mocking laugh at your angry face 😝

The danish 'intimidating' facial expression is really more of a blindly focused and relaxed face, lol. We just have 'resting face', and are really focused on getting home/wherever we need to go, and pick a direction to stare in, so we don't meet anyones eyes. (because we are socially awkward without alcohol).

hi Kelly! I did my exchange in Denmark and I must say that I experienced quite a lot of similarities between Denmark and my home country, Belgium. Especially in the north of Belgium where we speak Dutch I've noticed that the more introverted, timid or rather shy nature is a common thing. (But then again getting very drunk is also a really big thing here) I agree that it's not that easy to get into the already "made" friend-groups in DK but I agree that once Danish people let you in, it lasts for a very long time! I absolutely loved living there during 6 months!

Later this year I will go to Japan with a Danish mate. I warned one of my Japanese teachers about how Danes are. After all, the Japanese are known for making Swedes look as expressive as the Italians and for making the English look as straightforward as the Dutch. She thought for a minute and said that she envies Danes a bit. Being that blunt and honest is far easier than having to worry so much about how to be perfectly subtle and kind like the Japanese have to.

Karla Fiona M-R as a 14-year-old you’ll be in a 7th-9th grade. It’s our kind of elementary school, however you’ll be in the one of the oldest classes. Gymnasium is after 9th or 10th grade, which spread from age 15-21. It is a 3 year education or less, depending on which youth education you choose. In 8th, 9th and 10th grade you can choose a bording school, which is a live-in school that in most cases specialises in different categories like sports, music, drama etc. After gymnasium you go to university or “college”. You can also educate yourself as a worker instead of or after gymnasium. Gymnasium are also specialised. STX: elementary “high school”. Wide spread programs in languages, math/science, music etc.
      HHX: economy, business and maths.
      HTX: IT and science.
HF: shorter STX program with exam in all subjects.
These are the main ones. There’s a bunch of other educations, such as SOSU that are “social workers” and similar.
STX, HHX and HTX are 3 year courses. HF is 2 years.
Hope that made a bit of sense, it is confusing but represent many possibilities.

Højskole is like boarding school, but for fun, that you can do voluntarily as a gap-year after gymnasium. Ages range from 18 and up. Often they focus more on creative skills. They also tend to have shorter summer programs for people of all ages. Efterskole is similar, but is in between folkeskole (kindergarten class - 9th year) and gymnasium and is equivalent to the 10th year. It isn't mandatory either.
      -
There are 9 mandatory years of the danish school system (folkeskole), efter that you can choose to go to gymnasium, which I guess is something like a mix between high school and college (level wise). There are also more practical schools that focus on apprenticeships, Erhvervsskole, that you can do after folkeskole.

Karla Fiona M-R When it comes to age, You should go in 8th grade of elementary school. If your Danish is not that strong, They might put You in 7th grade or Perhaps even 6th if You're bad at school (though, it is highly unlikely) You might need to put in some extra work, since you might have a language barrier.
Though, højskole translates to High school, it is not the same. Højskole isn't technically even a Real school. You have to be 18 and it costs money. You usually to go there for a few months, up to a year, if You need a year to focus on learning things, that normal school doesn't teach You (commonly, højskoler is very artistic) or just need a break or some time to find yourself.
You should not use to much energy about the rest of the education system, since it isn't relevant to You, before in a few years. It is a bit complicated, but Your future teacher/student councilor probably knows all about it.
If You need any help or advice You're welcome to ask. I'm starting the gymnasium (HF - acting) This summer, so I know most of what there is to know about the Danish school system by now.

If your opinions are common in Denmark, my family has held onto our danishness through many generations abroad. My mother, 1st generation born outside of Denmark and EVERYONE else is of Danish heritage. We all behave in ways similar to your descriptions. We're not weirdos, we're normal like the rest of the Danes!👍😊💗

I might be 2 generations removed from Denmark, but watching these videos gave me some insite to myself. My grandfather was the first born in the US. His father was the true dane, however he died when my grandfather was 13. I suspect that enough Danish rubbed off on him. I did get to see him quite often and he died when I was 18
