Frickin' A, this is so unreal. I was born in the late '80s and have walked up and down Telegraph many many many times. I get the most painful nostalgia watching this. So much is gone now. Cody's Books is gone. Shakespeare & Co. became an expensive cafe. Fat Slice is now an empty storefront. Kip's was killed by the pandemic. T-Shirt Orgy just closed. Blondie's Pizza managed to get lucky and just be renamed Abe's Pizza. And there are things here that even I don't remember. 1:30 I knew that location for a long time as Smart Alec's, now it's Super Duper Burger. Well, on the up side, we have three dispensaries now, so at least that's some positive progress.
Same dude same Aching nostalgia for sure I’m in my early 30’s now Born and raised in the bay and so much has changed This whole area has lost a lot of its soul and edge I used to go here all the time with my sister We’d explore quirky Tibetan shops These sketch underground magazine places that had x rated magazines in plastic covers Vagabonds Hippies Musicians Just so fricking cool and alive So so different now it pains me
I was born on Telegraph and spent the first years of my life at Carlton. It'll always be Blondies to me. ❤️ These fuckers can try as they might, but people Berkeley will always and forever be Berzerkeleyites!
Blows my mind catching a glimpse of Shakespeare & Co, how I miss that. And the old Berkeley Inn! It burned down around 1990 and was a sad empty lot for decades. Cody's, gone too. So many more great memories...Intermezzo, Mario's La Fiesta...the Heidelberg!! Guess you really can't go home again.
Dead show at the Greek. They used to set up a speaker in the athletic field next door to the Greek so that the overflow ‘heads could dance. All the VWs & campers parked along Piedmont, outside of Memorial Stadium is also a sign. The Berkeley Inn is still seen @ haste & Telegraph. I’m guessing this is like ‘88-‘89. Last time the GD played the Greek was on 89, so maybe someone was archiving it. This is good documentation.
Anyone recall name of the fun retail (retro novelty?) shop for teenages on southwest corner -- sold kinda kitchy stuff ... like james dean and marilyn monroe posters but also an oversized Swatch watch for the wall of a teenagers bedroom. Maybe betty boop metch, too. Inflatable palm trees.
i beleive that the dead were playing at the greek and the run off crowd would gather on the feild with speakers...i lived just up the street looking over strawberry feild and could see and hear the hippies from my porch...
Uncle Ralph's! I submitted this video to the Internet Archive, but they rejected it, though they accepted a video of Camper Van Beethoven from around the same era. I recently finished Jonathan Lethem's book "A Gambler's Anatomy", most of which occurs around a somewhat fictional Telegraph Avenue. In the book, Top Dog is a slider stand etc. It is worth a read.
@@cxbrx Yep Uncle Ralph's that's it! Man, I sure miss the comic book shops that there there in the 80's. The Best Of Both Worlds and Comics and Comics.

I'm stunned to hear Kip's has fallen. I thought that place would be there forever.
I wish they had footage from 1972, the Mack (1973) was filmed in Oakland from September to December 1972.

1:33 the green car looks exactly like mine and I drove on that part of telegraph many times that year! Watching this video was a Deja Vu experience.
Remembering Larry Blakes - lived on Haste near Telegraph 80 - 82. Would not recognize place today.

Brings back memories.
It seems like as more time passes by, not as much people outside doing what they do...

Those were the Dazes, Dark Star Friday the 13th Epic!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There used to be a stereo shop right near the beginning of this video. Anyone remember the name? I want to say something like Uncle's Stereo?

I was on that soccer field because I did not have a ticket. The dead set up speakers so that we could all hear the show.
Is Fat Slice still there? Anyone know?
I recognize that cops voice.
