I followed a UA-camr called 'Grumpy Granny' idea about taking photos on a piece of cheap carpet from the hardware shop here in Australia it was under 30 bucks, it would b even cheaper in America and it's a grey brown carpet, very lightweight. Cheers Graham

When i first started i used to right out long sentences then learned i didn't need to write that much . Just be to the point and not confuse your buyer. My LED lighting is the best purchase i made for my business for sure makes such a difference . I use a a back board with a light grey vinyl wallpaper for my photos . Really helpful vid Matt :) i never thought to put my shipping and dispatch time in my description tho.
I love you so much Mat. I think it’s partly because of your knowledge to lend me but also because we have the same issues. I’m a retired nurse of 35 yrs and every day, every hour usually I have debilitating pain in my neck and back. Past hx of 2 neck sx’s & 1 back sx. So I really relate to you. Beginning this EBay thing is a good distraction for me. I just turned down an all expenses paid trip to NYC because of it. It sucks ass but at least I’m 64 you’re only35. So I have so much empathy for you. And btw the idea of Airbnb originated with me years ago. Everyone thought I was crazy.
Great video and great advice Matt, thanks! I love to read studies on the intricacies of sales of pre-owned goods. Here are a few things I'd like to add: 1. Instead of "used", always say "pre-owned" 2. Clothing listings with stock images (or that were modeled well) sold for $10 more on average than the exact same item without stock images and/or modeled. That was on Poshmark, but assuming the general concept would transfer to other platforms 3. SEO algorithms punish (push down in searches) certain things like keyword stuffing; ie., cut & pasting a bunch of words like #cottagecore #festival #vintage #workwear #businesscasual and also repetiveness, like Blue Eddie Bauer shirt 3xs. You'd want to say blue Eddie Bauer shirt once, then say blue shirt by Eddie Bauer then Eddie Bauer shirt in blue Good luck to all my fellow resellers!

Great info! Thanks Matt. I did come across a store that included a template picture in each listing of a blank mannequin with each measurement for each listing. Every listing had this template on the 3rd picture with the measurements filled out. It was so helpful for me as a buyer. I got excited to look thru the whole shop knowing I could breeze through and find what fit and what didn't. I wish more sellers did measurements. Sleeve length is important to me. I'm tall and have long arms. I frequently have to message the sellers before I buy to measure for me.
Text Blaze Chrome extension is an excellent tool to eliminate repetitive typing. Photo room is also an excellent tool to edit your images for an all white background. There is a desktop version as well as an app. I find that the app works much better and faster.

hey Matt, you should create some playlists… Maybe one where you put together all of your videos when you go through tags at goodwill, general selling advice etc. when I’m working I like to listen to your stuff and if I can select a playlist, it will run through all of them instead of me having to stop and select the next one every 15 or so minutes and It could potentially help you get more views. of all of the UA-camrs out here doing what you’re doing, you’re my favorite, your sense of humor is right up my alley and in general you just seem like a good guy lol. I discovered recently that that wordy stuff comes from the recently installed ebay AI, chat gpt, which it takes from all the item specifics.. It is ridiculous!!

Currently putting measurements in decription aswell as having the measurement as a picture. Thinking about only doing pictures to save time, do you think having in desc aswell has a massive advantage?

I put my white balance to 6500k (what my ring lights are) and the background looked pink instead of white. I'm about to try the ISO suggestion now. I've been playing with pro mode for a while now and I'm pretty happy with my method but I'm looking for an easier way to show my husband because auto mode makes anything black look washed out and dingy.

Photo pro tip: set your white balance to get true color. You can't do this natively on iPhone, you need to use a 3rd party app. If you don't set white balance, then your colors will not be true. You don't need to buy a gray card or anything - just anything neutral or white, a sheet of paper or whatever.
I used to set white balance every time but it was never consistent and usually made the color matching worse. That may just be the phone I was using though. Would guess it works much better with DSLRs.
@@ThriftALife Ah yeah I think it depends on the actual software you're using, at least on iphone. All I know is that the color matching if you use the native iPhone camera is garbage, but if I set WB using Lightroom (which is the Adobe photo edit but also camera app, that I have as an extension of CC, thanks to a former academic career) then it looks good. There's a bunch of other apps that do the same. I don't have experience with Android photos/cams.
@dustyoldhat You reminded me of something with your comment dusty, and I have downloaded a Kelvin light temperature app. Then went into the manual controls of my phone, manually set the camera to the kelvin of the reflected light off my background, and now just open and close the aperture setting to determine how much light gets in. The color of the clothes is spot on now as long as I adjust the aperture. No more editing in post-production. I only played with it for a day now, but I can save a LOT of time if this works.
it's re-assuring saying "ope the word shirt doesn't exist in the title... he doesn't need to use the word "size"... why is the sizing at the end of the listing..." pretty much in lockstep with you. I should do videos like this.

I have a similar-sized 215-item men's clothing closet on Poshmark, and I feel my descriptions and photos are significantly better than either of these examples! Yet my sell-through is MUCH lower right now. Is Ebay just objectively better than Poshmark for selling clothes? I have been thinking, "It's the economy stupid" to explain my slowdown in sales this year, but now, seeing closets with sell-throughs at 50% as an example of an "OK" Ebay closet... I am just not sure, maybe I need to pull my inventory off Posh and put it on Ebay? Thank you Thrift a Life for all you do!
I've tried leaving a reply comment to this comment about a dozen times and it gets deleted every time. This always happens when I try to contribute to Matt's comments, it's so weird. I'll try one last time. Noooo don't pull your inventory off Posh! All that hard work for nothing?? Just cross post everything.... you can use list perfectly or do it manually. i start all listings on ebay then cross post to poshmark at the same time, it takes 30 sec to 1 min per listing to get the posh one up. i drag the photos into the ebay listing, and in a second open browser window, drag the photos again (while they're still highlighted in finder) into the posh window. back to ebay listing where i totally complete the listing, then "view listing" and drag the title into the poshmark title field, then drag the description the same way, then do the posh dropdowns and prices and list. again it takes less than a minute. and when there's a posh sale, i end listing on ebay, and when there's an ebay sale I delete listing on Posh (not "Not for sale" because that creates clutter and false listings count) It's really as easy as that.... Posh has absolutely sucked lately and it's always a gamified race to the bottom there anyway. 1000% worth it to be on Ebay (or at least some other platform) Them's my two pennies.
I am out of the loop completely with Poshmark but last I checked in with it, it was doing pretty poorly. Other people know better than I why that's the case. But I stopped listing on it a while back. If you have a closet and a lot of listings might as well leave them up but yeah, give Ebay a chance.

I just use it for shares and reposts rn to Posh. But, its shouldn't be too much more difficult to enable the cross listing features.

Yet my sell-through is MUCH lower right now. Is Ebay just objectively better than Poshmark for selling clothes? I have been thinking, "It's the economy stupid" to explain my slowdown in sales this year, but now, seeing closets with sell-throughs at 50% as an example of an "OK" Ebay closet... I am just not sure, maybe I need to pull my inventory off Posh and put it on Ebay? Thank you Thrift a Life for all you do!

Noooo don't pull your inventory off Posh! All that hard work for nothing?? Just cross post everything.... you can use list perfectly or do it manually. i start all listings on ebay then cross post to poshmark at the same time, it takes 30 sec to 1 min per listing to get the posh one up. i drag the photos into the ebay listing, and in a second open browser window, drag the photos again (while they're still highlighted in finder) into the posh window. back to ebay listing where i totally complete the listing, then "view listing" and drag the title into the poshmark title field, then drag the description the same way, then do the posh dropdowns and prices and list. again it takes less than a minute. and when there's a posh sale, i end listing on ebay, and when there's an ebay sale I delete listing on Posh (not "Not for sale" because that creates clutter and false listings count)
It's really as easy as that.... Posh has absolutely sucked lately and it's always a gamified race to the bottom there anyway. 1000% worth it to be on Ebay (or at least some other platform)

I am out of the loop completely with Poshmark but last I checked in with it, it was doing pretty poorly. Other people know better than I why that's the case. But I stopped listing on it a while back. If you have a closet and a lot of listings might as well leave them up but yeah, give Ebay a chance.

@@dustyoldhat Thank you! I have resisted cross listing for the fear of double selling an item. But, I gotta do something at this point. I have a bot that will allow me to cross post. I just use it for shares and reposts rn to Posh. But, its shouldn't be too much more difficult to enable the cross listing features.
@@ThriftALife I have been struggling, that is for sure! I was selling almost twice as fast last year. But, its really, really hard to know if that is just me, the platform in general, or other outside influences like the economy. I really appreciate your videos and the menswear manifesto!
