  • I want to draw your attention to a matter that is crucial for Pakistan, transcending all forms of politics and party affiliations. This issue pertains to Pakistani society, the state of Pakistan, and its future, requiring us to think beyond party politics as Pakistanis.
It's important for me to speak because, observing from the capital city of America, I am viewing Pakistan through the lens of the entire world. I'm referring to an incident that occurred two days ago in Swat, where a man from Sialkot was killed by an uncontrollable mob on the accusation of desecrating the Holy Quran. This person was accused, murdered, and then his body was set on fire.
When this incident came to light, I discussed it in detail. At that time, I didn't have much information, as the reporting had only happened a few hours earlier. Historically, there have been approximately 2,200 such incidents in Pakistan since 1986, involving violence, arrests, or blasphemy complaints.
There are three main aspects to consider:
Exploitation by Powerful Elements: Typically, a few powerful individuals manipulate situations, accusing someone-be it a Muslim, non-Muslim, Christian, or Ahmadi-of something serious. Usually, these accusations stem from personal disputes, and the mob is misled and manipulated.
Mob Mentality: A mob, when gathered, becomes uncontrollable and blind to reason. They are exploited and their basic intellect is overshadowed by emotions. Incidents like the murder of Sri Lankan manager Priyantha Kumar in Sialkot in 2021, and Mashal Khan from a university in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2017, illustrate this destructive mob mentality.
Police Inaction: Recently, it seems that the police in Pakistan are unable to stop such mobs. They lack the capacity to rescue victims from the mob and keep them safe. This is a new phenomenon, as previously, the police had some ability to handle such situations. Now, the police often surrender, stating that the mob was uncontrollable.
Since my initial discussion, more information has emerged. Footage of the incident has been circulating, showing a crowd of young people around a burning corpse, capturing the scene on their mobile phones. This footage, shared widely on social media, shows the excitement and slogans of the mob. Historically, such punishments were not part of Islamic tradition and were more common in other religious histories until the 17th century.
In researching this, I found only a couple of historical incidents where mobs in the Muslim world used burning as a punishment. This practice was almost non-existent in Islamic history.
This incident raises several questions about how such events can occur, how the police allow them to happen, and the overall reaction within the country. The footage circulating online portrays these young people as misguided and savage, prompting outsiders to question the state of the country where such things can happen. Despite having modern gadgets, these youths seem to be mentally trapped in a medieval mindset, showing a stark contrast between their technological advancement and their outdated thinking.
This issue requires urgent attention and collective action to address the deep-rooted problems within society and ensure such incidents do not happen again.
