@@meatpuppet5036 I don't believe unconscious bias is a formal psychology term but people can absolutely be primed to think in certain ways with repeating exposure to a stimulus. people build associations in their minds their whole lives. johnny depps career fell off before heard's abuse allegations, but before then, he was in a lot of popular movies. clearly the american public has build positive associations with the actor, leading them to sympathize and trust him. so many of his followers have admitted they believe him at least in part due to the fact that they like his movies, or because his movie roles are associated with positive feelings of happiness or nostalgia for them.

Godddd I hate 'body language experts.' Body language was my abuser's #1 rationalization for all the times he hurt me. 'He could tell I was lying,' 'He could tell I was cheating.' Neither of those things happened, but the facts didn't matter more than his 'trial by vibes.'
But I hate people who go 'that sounds hot' about rape testimony even more. There's no fucking 'irony' there, they're just telling _countless people who've been violated,_ 'I agree with your attacker, that sounds really enjoyable.' It doesn't 'just' apply to the people they've decided are 'liars,' it's all of us. Someone says that to me, I start thinking in the direction of self-defense, because that is an absolutely _predatory_ thing to say.
Excellent video, sorry it had to be made. What a shitty situation.

the public reaction to this trial has been absolutely terrifying to witness. as a mentally ill and bi woman who has experienced domestic abuse, it’s been very sobering to see peers and strangers on and offline joking about crazy b*tches who need to be institutionalized, gross bi women who have threesomes and cheat on their male partners with the first woman they see-but are also faking being gay for clout, and judging emotional reactions to decide whether or not someone is a “real” victim… and then saying “oh but i don't mean *you,* i mean amber heard!”
NONE of this is being done in the name of abuse survivors. i’m SO sick of people using survivors as a shield from criticism when i’ve been having recurring nightmares about my abuser for the first time in years because of how utterly inescapable and triggering this trial is. i don't see ANY way i could possibly feel safe and validated as a survivor right now when it’s so obvious this reaction is only happening out of bigotry and celebrity worship.

What worries me as an attorney is that any jury/ judge in this case is as terrified to rule against him as most influencers are to speak out against him. That isn't how our justice system should work.
Depp's case is quite poor, from a legal standpoint, as any objective attorney will agree. The case shouldn't have been brought, at least not against Heard. And then, it should've been dismissed. He's not even suing the PUBLISHER that profited from the article. Furthermore, this is a civil case for money, so even if you believe Depp that Heard knowingly lied with malicious intent, he still has to prove actual damages caused by her statements, and he hasn't done that. His reputation had been negative for the past decade, not because of Heard, but because he was habitually late and intoxicated at public events and every movie he was hired for. Nevertheless, in such a public, highly-charged case, you can't blame jurors for being afraid to rule against him

As a man who experienced IPV at the hands of a woman, thanks for making this video. Generally when I share my abuse, people respond with either indifference or misogyny (sometimes both). This is normal in our culture. When clips of the trial started appearing in my feed, I felt excited, hopeful- maybe now that male abuse is in the conversation, people will be more willing to have empathy for us.
When I actually watched the clips though, something felt off. Depp's charm, the odd collection of dudes in his corner, Reddit eating shit up, his therapist's popularity. And yeah, as you mentioned, the misogyny. I said to myself 'ok, male domestic abuse is being discussed, that's good. I only feel off because trauma and misogyny'. Then I stopped engaging with that content because I can't function if I'm dealing with insomnia and flashbacks.
Given that you've experienced IPV as well, I'm blown away that you made this. I know it was hell to do all the research and writing on this. And in spite of that you brought a clear, contextualized, and informed perspective. You changed the way I look at this situation. Absolute queen. Thank you, again.

Chile... It's the way that it ain't even about guilty or not guilty. He didn't press charges against her. This is a civil case. He is suing for defamation and he will lose. Hell he would lose even if he never touched her and had overwhelming evidence that proves it. Like it is hard for celebs to win libel cases. You have to prove malice. I mean Cardi B won her case because the defendant literally said she would lie about Carbi B for money which is textbook malice. The whole thing is a sham.

@@doughbaby1369 But What about when Johnny Depp was considered guilty before being able to prove some form of innocence in the court of law? When he lost his roles and his life was put to a halt? Was that okay? That is also an action caused by public opinion. The Majority of US court cases (outside of federal courts) are and should be accessible to the public to be viewed. You can go back to the early eras of courts throughout world history tis is not some new evil crazy thing. But because cameras are now allowed that changes things? that's simply limiting accessibility. Because previously people relied solely on court drawings for famous cases and made judgements off of those as well.

    • @doughbaby1369
      @doughbaby1369 2 роки тому +26

@@RazzyXM22 just because something unfair happens does not mean its okay to inflict on another person. And the reason cameras in court rooms suck is on plain display with this trial. We have people picking apart every action Heard does, analyzing her body language and insisting she isn’t really crying. Courtroom sketches tend to be far more forgiving than the public. You seem to be basing a lot of your argument on something bad happened before so its okay if bad things keep happening. Just because bad things or unfair things are inflicted on someone doesn’t mean we should be content to watch those happen to another.

Something that really bugged me was when Amber Heard's lawyer was trying to bring up the fact that women have been historically over diognised with Borderline Personality Disorder as a way to discredit them, and were often put in mental institutions where they were mistreated and abused, and his phycologist just said "no, that's just a fact that women are statistically more likely to have BPD"... This case really is the perfect example of white male (celebrity) privilege to me because it seems like Johnny’s fans could look at the exact same behavior or piece of evidence and form the polar opposite opinion depending on whether it was presented by Johnny or Amber’s team. (For example, eating/smiling on the stand, drawing pictures, violent texts about the other, violence against inanimate objects, etc)
The bias seems almost purposefully obtuse.

Context: I'm mixed white-black and whenever I go to the airport, I'm usually with my (white) mom and (mixed) sister, while my (black) dad goes the long way because he doesn't have Clear. The amount of times we've been pulled over, accosted, or reported by "well-meaning" white (and sometimes nonwhite!!) people for traf**cking is a number I cannot count on both of my hands. And it's not because we travel a lot.
As I got older, the incidents started turning from the racist "hey that's a white woman with two nonwhite kids, are they actually hers??" to the possibly even more racist "hey are those two kids of ambiguous gender accosting a white woman??"
And it's NOT because of protocol (I've seen all-one-race families get through without being pulled over) or because it's only the authorities -- I've been questioned by a random middle-aged white woman as to what I was doing around my own mother.

Here's the one thing i keep coming back to in this civil suit (NOT a criminal trial, though I understand most people don't know the difference): Johnny Depp is the claimant. He started it. He is the initiator, and, if you like, the aggressor
Amber Heard has no choice in the matter. She must either appear and defend herself, or accept default judgment (that she defamed JD). Appearing means getting publicly dragged thru the mud. He has been leading the dance the whole way -- what arguments his legal team advances, which items they submit into evidence, which mental health experts and witnesses they bring to the stand. I give her full credit for standing up for herself against a public figure with more money, clout, and fame than herself
From the very beginning this suit has been about Johnny Depp protecting his public image. That says a LOT, imo

It's what happened after the ''everyone should be a feminist'' started to gain track. You have people claiming to be feminists with the most minimal knowledge on the subject, all they know is what they've read on social media and google here and there. It's typically the kind of feminism that's the easiest to digest because it requires the littlest amount of introspection and critical thinking, not to mention backlash. Why do you think mainstream ''sex-positive'' feminism is so popular and receives the least amount of backlash?
But yeah.... everyone should be supporting ''the advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes.'', but that doesn't make one a feminist. Imagine someone who identifies with communism walking into a meetup and starting debating marxism while he hasn't even read a single thing by Marx, or even worse... trying to school people or telling people to go ''educate themselves'' while doing it. That's basically a generation of ''feminists'' we're encountering online right now.
It's all nice and dandy until you got to take a stance that isn't applauded by the majority or even worse... Realize that you've internalized the misogyny and are part of the problem.

That bit about body language science makes sense, same reason a lie detector is nothing to put your faith in either. Sometimes I watch JCS Criminal Psychology and similar channels, and the narrator is always *so* confident he can tell you when the suspect (who we know from hindsight going in) is guilty because of how they move, twitch, where they look. It'll be like, "You can tell with full certainty that when the suspect moves his hand behind his thigh, he was definitely raped by his mother - if he moves it in front of his thigh, it was the other way around. Taking this into consideration, it's no wonder he got into hard drugs and furry art that lead him down the path of double homicide." It also shakes me with how seemingly in awe he always is at the way cops will straight lie to and manipulate the suspects to trick information out of them. Yeah, we know they did it, but what if they do this to innocent people too? What if an innocent person gives all the nervous ticks and hand gestures they consider telling of dishonesty?

    • @scarletsletter4466
      @scarletsletter4466 2 роки тому +4

You're right to an extent, body language analysis is garbage. But there are some things that hold almost certain across cases. For example, an innocent defendant (or one who believes they're innocent) usually proclaims their innocence from the beginning and acts angry about being accused. If a defendant does anything except that, it's likely there is some level of guilt for something. Whether it's the crime being investigated is the question. Sometimes these individuals are acting sketchy for other reasons, e.g., they didn't commit this double homic*de, but they are dealing illegal substances

One of the biggest things I've seen as someone with schizoaffective is that people's "gut reactions" often target homeless disabled people who can't conform to normal expectations. I have seen so many women try to justify calling the police on people with nothing or other forms of violence just because someone talks to themselves or isn't in touch with reality.

i'm not gonna lie, i have found myself caught up in the story being told by jd's team especially towards the start of the trial. but as time has gone on, the more i see myself in amber, the more i see my father (who abused me for 20 years) in johnny and the more i think about the fact that nobody would believe me in a court setting. the hardest part about convincing people that my father isn't who he seems is that he just seems so fucking cool and charming and smart and shit.
i know that if we were both to try and convince a jury, not only would they believe that he was a perfect father, but that i THE CHILD, someone who is currently 20, and was 3-17 when most of the shittiness occurred, was actually the abuser. that i treated him terribly. its so easy to believe jd's story because he tells a great story. but that doesn't mean its true.
I'm trying to care less about the trial. I've been so caught up in it that I've been feeling ill everyday since it started really. thank you for this video. will definitely return when i need a compassionate reminder of the fact that just because people don't often believe me, doesn't mean I'm lying.

I’ve been the same, though mostly seeing my mother’s story in amber rather than my own. Despite witnessing DV of my mother as a child and being gaslit about it by the abuser, I initially thought nothing of DP’s lawsuit, took it for granted a year ago that he was the “real victim” until hearing about this current case and realizing… what the hell was I thinking? It is so so important to think about structural power in this scenario. To consider the context, how cherry-picked quotes and even video evidence doesn’t tell the whole story. I know my mom seldom if ever captured the whole of her altercations on audio- you’re not just able to start recording at the beginning like that. Her agression towards my dad could easily be used to frame her as the perpetrator or claim that they were equally abusive

I'm also disgusted by the repeated stigmatisation of people with personality disorders and addiction. In the end the only ones winning here are 1) publicists 2) the ghouls participating in and feeding the circus for clout and mondtary gain.

Then *this* trial has exploded onto social media. I've seen some wild takes like its a circus, and the backlash against MeToo is horrifying.
You are extremely on point about everyone is scrabbling to be in this narrative, and its really freaking weird, like they have skin in the game. The critical thinking, as you said, is thrown out, and its for this parasocial entitlement.
The wider perspective should be focused on how revealing this mess has been for people, and how its gotten to the point where the ripple effect will be felt by far too many.

FINALLY! Someone makes some sense. I thought I was going insane watching that trial and then seeing all this support for him from people online. I was so disappointed with that verdict and what it really means. It was Howard Stern who made a comment about Johnny Depp being a narcissist and doing this big public trial because he thinks he is smarter than everyone and can manipulate people to believe his lies - I thought thank goodness one person sees what I see. It was all such a disgusting act and the trial became about something completely different than what it should have been. His witnesses were not credible at all and his rambling monologue on the stand for three days was crazy to me. And then people had the nerve to demonize Amber's Lawyer for cutting him off when he was literally wasting hours of peoples time with his fantasies - what a joke. Even how Johnny spoke to him and using his last name Rottenborn to be belligerent and condescending. I saw a truly horrible, abusive person and I don't know how people can be so stupid and blind to the act and this fake narrative of being some poor little boy who was abused by his mother. He made such a point of fabricating the narrative that he was like his abused father sayinghow his father was never once aggressive, only to have proof come out that his father had hit him as a boy, like how far do you go to paint the lies!? When that "psychologist" said that Amber had histrionic personality disorder I could not scoff hard enough. The description she gave about having to be the centre of attention and talking in very elaborate phrases whilst saying nothing - that is exactly who Johnny Depp is! The fact this an "addiction nurse" suddenly became unaware of what "using" could POSSIBLY mean when on the stand - laughable! I'm so disappointed in the general public for being so gullible and ignorantly loud about that gullibleness. When everyone else believes the lies it makes it hard to respect them anymore. I thought back to Ted Bundy and how all these women were attracted to him. On a final note, there is an episode of American Dad called "The People Vs Martin Sugar" where Roger is in court showboating and manipulating everyone and Stan is the only person who can see the truth. Watching this trial was literally that episode.

Even in self-described feminist-anarchist-intersectional communities (like a twitch stream that I used to really love), this bullshit has just been going on and I have been 'corrected'. And what's worse is seeing women who have been in abusive relationships as well take the side of Depp. It is just too much and triggering for me, because of my past experiences. And it is anger-inducing but what is also worse is that, having worked hard for the past 4 years to regain my sense of self and agency after my ex boyfriend did DARVO to me continuously and painted me as the abuser, this whole trial bullshit is retraumatizing and making me question again the role I played in that relationship. To make matters worse, my cute non-binary bisexual crush is a big fan of tiktok and for fuck's sake, they were just telling me about body language specialists and shit. I am also a bisexual woman and I am TIRED. Thank you for doing this work even though it is costly for you. This whole spectacle is amazingly dehumanizing, I tried not to follow it, but still had news and commentary come at me. Seeing people who believe Amber and who are doing actual nuanced commentary on the case has been a breath of fresh air. It's amazing how people can actually believe that the power dynamic is reversed in this case, and the collateral damage from that is going to be big (Marilyn Manson's already trying to use the same strategy). I remember watching Allen v Farrow and in one of the episodes they talked about an expert witness who wasn't even a psychologist who invented some sort of syndrome that Farrow had and then many men who wanted to take children away from their wives in divorce trials used that guy's 'expertise', but they didn't even want the kids, they just wanted to punish their wives for leaving them.

I couldn’t even stand to be online because of all of the horrible conspiracies, outright lies, “amateur detective” work, fucking memes for some reason, and blatant political manipulation of the situation (from ppl in both parties). I saw them come out in droves while it was still a developing story, before peoples bodies were even fucking cold. It was truly sick, I don’t think I’ve ever been so angry. The absolute dehumanization that true crime causes is so so terrible.
I cant understand how people well and truly interact with Amber’s story like this. I’m not a survivor but unfortunately I have friends who are.. friends who knew they wouldnt be believed, who were lied to by the people handling their case, by the cops, who were dropped by lawyers and couldnt have a witness come forward or tell truths about their pain because it would make them less credible and sympathetic. The court is absolute theatre there is hardly ever justice there. If their cases were televised i cannot begin to imagine the suffering it would have caused them.

They mock her as though she hasn't been coached to perform these very actions to try in vain amd have her beleived, as a woman, over the man in court. These are things countless witnesses will be told to do on the stand to humanize them and increase empathy from the jury. She is doing everything she can to have people listen to her and take her seriously - and the things she is coached to do are bejng weaponized online to point out... what exactly? Her incompetence at being a victim? Her inability to respond to aggressive questioning in an "acceptable: mannor? body language analysis "experts" scare me so much. beyond the heard/depp situation, there are so many videos condemning people who didn't react "normally" or "properly" to the deaths of family members, even though they were probably just dissociating from trauma and grief. it's just so sick to see these charlatans judge the minute facial expressions of grieving parents and abuse survivors.

Regarding the reaction thing, there was a really good article a few years ago about parents who’d accidentally left their children in hot cars. There was a woman who they were afraid of having testify because she was so calm and methodical in talking about what happened, and they were afraid the jury would think she was cold and uncaring.
So instead they played the 911 call from the scene, where she could be heard screaming and crying and expressing regret and horror. She cared, she just compartmentalized after the event because she had other things to take care of.
So yeah I’m rambling but the idea that If someone is composed when talking about a traumatic event it means they’re lying is so dangerous.

I would stand absolutely NO chance in a trial judged on how I come across, instead of based on facts. I have been in one civil case where I did my own defence instead of having a lawyer, and it stood me in good stead because I was seen as presenting the facts in a dispassionate manner, but only because there was no jury, and I was regarded by the judge as a legal representative instead of the actual defendant.

My sister's friend lost her two children in a house fire recently. She was at work but her husband was home with the kids. They had just bought this house and some of the wiring was found to be faulty and badly placed. This tragedy made big news because her husband had been a volunteer fire fighter. We got the 'pleasure' of watching the True Crime Crowd turn their fucking nightmare of a freak accident into a conspiracy theory.
They claimed that Dustin started the fire, that he 'forgot the kids' inside, that he left them to burn, that he was having an affair and wanted them dead, that Nikki left her kids with an abuser etc. All kinds of completely unsubstantiated sick shit that they pulled out of their ass because "I heard a story like that on a podcast."

This is a major consequence of the “panopticon” of the internet. We’ve commercialized reacting and being on “the right side” to the point where people view this as a team sport. Everyone wants to feel like they are uniquely prepared to figure out the truth because our landscape pressures us to have an opinion. But in the end, we don’t know anything. We aren’t trained for this and there are just some things we’ll never fully know. But at this point, people don’t care. They just want to “win.” This is the endgame of the panopticon: fan cams of a domestic violence case.

No one cares about women's pain because we think women deserve it. Always. I agree women are not believed and supported in general, and it's exponentially worse if you're not white. By default, I think the accuser should be given credibility because claiming be a victim of DV or rape isn't something that confers a bunch of benefits...usually the exact opposite.
I haven't followed this case at all up until a week ago, and the more I see, my opinion is Heard is lying and that is a HUGE disservice to all real victims. She is like a 1 in a million case where claiming she's a victim of abuse during the #metoo movement (started by a Black woman then co-opted by rich, white women) actually did benefit her. Given how much she's benefited and also potentially hurt other women by lying, I'm viewing her downfall as karmic justice.
