    Just wanted to say, thank you. Before your videos I was afraid of weightlifting. As a guy with 350/265/400 lifts it’s strange to get excited to clean 130 pounds. You got me to enjoy lifting even more. Havent been this excited in ages. Going to watch this video later tonight!

      Jesus fuck that’s a big bench, how much do you weigh and why are your squat and deadlift so comparatively low?

    • @repe0
      @repe0 6 років тому

      Shane Corrigan I don’t know. I used to have a poverty bench and big legs but then started doing rows and db bench A LOT. BW is currently 185@6 feet.
      I was stuck at 210 but after that gained 50 pounds to my bench in 4 months
      Started doing cleans just 1.5 week ago and progress has been good. Watched the video about the bar crash and it really helped me a lot with the timing.
      PS. Have to give a big props to A7 shirt.

    I agree with a lot of what you are saying here. I am not a coach, so I can only talk from the "athlete" point of view: there are many "hobby competitions" that are for situations exactly like that. Everybody is there to compete against themselves and each other, nobody cares what your total is, really, but it is still serious! And there is a lot a weighlifting meet can give you: Firstly, it means much more external pressure than in the gym (audience, timing, silence etc), and it is good feedback for you to learn to focus inwards. Secondly, no matter your numbers, you go off of that platform happy, with a feeling of accomplishment, because you have prepared, you went on that platform and showed yourself, which let's be honest is more than what most people can say for themselves. Thirdly, I find that younger weightlifters are so supportive and nice to beginners, you go home from a WL meet with lots of new friends and inspiration.

I am interested in and respect all strength sports, and you do a really great job shining some light on the interesting/lesser known aspects of a sport like weightlifting. On the surface, it’s “boring” like nascar. Just the same thing over and over again. But from what I’ve learned from this channel, there are a million and one details that go into an athlete’s success in this sport and I think it makes the whole idea just intriguing

    I think what you're trying to say is... If one plans to compete, then one will periodize correctly. If one does not compete, one will not periodize correctly and will hit plateaus.
    Correct me if I'm wrong but I think there's a flaw in this argument. I'm not knocking competitions. It's just, logically, just because someone doesn't compete doesn't mean they train like they don't compete.
    For example, someone could hire a coach, train to be the best, and have incredible numbers yet never get on the platform. Why wouldn't they? Who knows... I'm just saying it's possible.

    So in my particular case I am aiming to obtain an entry total which I need to compete in British universities, april 2019. I've been lifting for a bit less than a year and I'm still 40KG behind that total, but I'm going up a weightclass. My question is, should I still follow this kind of preparatory-competitive-transition scheme knowing that I won't hit that entry total in a short term bases, or should I just focus on a 9 month preparatory phase until I hit that total?

    Zack, I usually greatly appreciate your content. It is mostly very well overthought, considering most relevant aspects of the given topic. I do not think that this time you were considerate enough. I have three kids, I work in two countries, an average of 60 hours a week. I go to half of my training sessions with my girlfriend, my 13-year old daughter and my 6-month old son, because my jobs take way too much of my time from them. Often times on these occasions I do not get to my lifts at all, because I have to hold my son so that his mom can do her squats, or because I have to teach my daughter how to rope climb. So I just go home without lifting, and bang out a couple of sets of pullups and pushups at home. Thus, my weekly microcycle often lasts ten days, two weeks. I still enjoy my trainings though. I do plan them, I do periodize my training, and time to time I hit a PR. Sport is a lifetime hobby for me, I have a great passion for it, but I do not think that I should add the extra stress of competing to my overly busy life. And if you call this an excuse, I can only tell you that you will understand me better in one or two decades. All the best!
