    As a Slovak born in mid sixties I learned Russian 10 years in schools. I am surprised that Ukrainian has much more words which are same or very close to my language and sounds very similar to Polish, especially when I hear T. Snyder speak. It seems to me that Ukrainian is closer to west Slavs than I thought before. It is a pity and great omission from our side we were supposed to know much more about our neighbours which become more and more our dear brothers. The more I study history of Ukraine and its culture the more I am amazed. Struggling for freedom for so long, never giving up against terrible odds. I am deeply impressed.

      for me as Russian who learned Polish as a kid it seems like particularly professor Snyder's Ukrainian sounds very Polish. May be because he knew Polish before Ukrainian and is pronouncing words in a "Polish" manner. in fact though, Ukrainian is closer to Slovak than to Russian. In terms of vocabulary, the Ukrainian language is the closest to Belarusian (16% of difference). After Belarusian, Ukrainian is also closer to Slovak, Polish, and Czech than to Russian - 38% of Ukrainian vocabulary is different from Russian.

      The fact that he is able to speak in Ukrainian shows an in depth desire to get to the very core of his own subject. Not all historians bother or are able to go down a linguistic route to a better understanding of their art, just as not all philosophers learn ancient Greek, German, English or French etc. to get to the heart of their studies.

      It is pleasing to hear this truth. This phenomena is crucial in historical facts. Rasha claims Ukraine is pseudo country, Ukrainian language is pseudo language. Whereas it is russian language that was derived from Ukrainian language. By number of words, Ukrainian language has more words than russian language. But rasha always runs on that basis of lies, and diversion. I guess now it is time for Ukraine to say enough is enough.
      I am ethnic Ukrainian. I vividly remember my Ukrainian parents were telling me how hopelessly bad are russians. They meant to say russians never want to work hard, they always want to steal, take what is not theirs, give orders to others, make people hate each other, implant the system of spying on each other. There is very little healthy thing about russians. My Ukrainian parents proved this is true.

      Also, I am certain that Professor Snyder liked these questions too, as they were new, refreshing, different, and help to gain insight. Also, it's wonderful how Professor Snyder interlinked the questions to show its different sides of a dice. Yeah, I know, but a coin only has two faces.

    Great talk. Timothy Snyder is a brilliant speaker who always seems to cut to the heart of the matter (his speech at the UN Security Council recently was exceptional). His points about the U.S.(how we do a lot of talking but don’t think we should have to do anything or be inconvenienced) and the importance of keeping truth ‘on the horizon’ really struck me. It can feel like a cynical world and I think that is part of the reason why watching Zelensky and the people of Ukraine has been such an inspiration to so many.

    I love how he describes Zelensky's leadership, that he doesn't try to do it all himself and listens to others. What Putin and many Russians fail to realise is that humility is strength and arrogance is a weakness

    I am impressed. I am Ukrainian born in Ukraine but grew up in another country. Sadly I speak Russian, Ukrainian language is not easy for me to speak, as it gets mixed up with other Slavic languages I speak. I don’t know how to start speaking without mixing it with other languages. I am impressed with Snyder I didn’t know he speaks Ukrainian. And sadly my children speak Russian and not their mother’s native language

    How different the reaction of the Ukraine's neighboring countries, for example Poland, and the western countries is to the Russian aggression against the Ukraine in 2022, compared to German's /Russian's aggression against Poland in 1939! Poland was left alone to fight the war. On the other hand, Ukraine receives intellectual, emotional, political, financial and army support from the west, and from Poland as well. That is an amazing change.

      Amazing. To people like you Hitler was the only 20th Century anti Communist fascist the West DIDN'T support. Despite the fact practically every western banker, industrialist, Monarch and most clergy supported Hitler, and di nothing to stop him when we could have. Find out how, why and who made HItler Chancellor then tell me how the West's support for him is any different then any fascist before or after Hitler, aryan or Islamic, not to mention current Ukraine Nazi's, and all for the some purpose. To confront the SU, now the RF. And you wonder why Russia's paranoid.

    Very strange to hear about Donbas from western Ukrainians. What they don’t understand Donbas now is all over Ukraine, all over the world. People who are left in Donbas are not Donbas. More than that, you have to recognize that in the last 9 years Russia was importing Russians into occupied territories. Donbas is not just people you see there now, it’s also volunteers who resisted Russian occupation in 2014, sacrificed everything to defend Ukraine way before the rest of Ukraine knew what they’re facing. And before the “war open to the world” capabilities, so not many believed what was going on there. You don’t realize that Ukraine owes its freedom partially to Donbas people who resisted back then and still resisting after 9 years. You should hear stories of people still being jailed in Donetsk for being pro-Ukrainian, for having underground movement to free that territory after 9 years in occupation…

      Yes. That question was unclear. Even before your comment I could think about three groups of people of Donbas

    • @p_serdiuk
      @p_serdiuk Рік тому +1

      I think there is a distinction between Donbas as a cultural area and Donbas as a territory. Many of the pro-Ukrainian people who are from there don't share elements of the local culture that led them to support Yanukovich and the separatists. Such people are just ordinary Ukrainians who happen to be from Donetsk or Luhansk.

    Неприємно здивований направду малою аудиторією, а відповідно і кількістю слухачів, що прийшла послухати професора Снайдера. На превеликий жаль не мав нагоди вчитися в УКУ, але був там кілька разів по справах і напевне знаю що в університеті є й більші приміщення. І точно не вірю, що серед студентів не знайшлося більше бажаючих послухати світило світового рівня. Не те щоб звинувачую, просто кинулося у вічі.

    Great meeting with Prof. Timothy Snider, thank you for that! His expertise is incredibly valuable in the present times. I wisch he would be more present in talkshows in the West and especially in Germany. There is a big part of the population there in a dire need for his clear view and explanations about the broader topics of the War in Ukraine.
