I've switched to hand made button holes due to the same reason.. The only thing i hate about my machine is its buttonhole making (even though they offer so many types)... Its just incomparable to a beautiful hand-done one.. I totally relate
Love this! This is a masterclass, not only in quick buttonholes, but in the kind of mindset one needs for sewing with small children (or just any kind of busy life!). It doesn't have to be perfect, but at the same time, sometimes the slower hand-done ways are actually easier :) Thanks for sharing!
Tomorrow I am subbing at a high school. I am sure I will have nothing to do. This video showed me I can easily put the buttonholes on my granddaughter’s Easter dress while sitting in the classroom.

Thank you so much for this video and your enthusiasm for hand stitched buttonholes. I’ve had so many situations where I completed a garment and then “ruined” it when I machined the buttonholes. Sadly I have avoided tailored jackets for that very reason. I’m excited to be hand stitching them now and I don’t feel bad about doing it the old fashioned way!
I love doing hand made button holes and hand sewn zippers , so much more control and they look much nicer . I agree, most times machine button holes turns into one big mess . 😊

Ok. I just purchased a 24 rower. So I had to get some Sarah on for your great teaching skills to get rolling. It'll be here next week. I've made 14 bishops on a 16er.
Love hearing your children! Seeing you making buttonholes with the children and the video equipment , you teaching etc.shows that anyone should try it. I agree that most buttonholes are faster, prettier, and sturdier, that machine made.
Depends on the situation, but my favorite is silk buttonhole twist. I use that on medium to heavy weight fabrics. It's a little pricey, but soo amazing. For a more affordable option, pearl cotton works well. Then for lightweight fabrics, I really like tatting thread, floche, coton a broder, and sometimes floss. I have all those fibers except floss on my website just fyi
