🎸 ACOUSTIC FINGERSTYLE LEVEL 1 [Full 20 Lesson Course] Beginners
Welcome to our Acoustic Fingerstyle Level 1 course! We're very excited to be welcoming the incredible Thomas back to the world of YGA to help us film and put together this course. There is no better fingerstyle player and tutor to guide you through this incredible style of guitar playing.
Fingerstyle, as a technique, is extremely powerful. It has the ability to take all of the chords that you already use regularly, and turn them into something magical.
When you put the plectrum down and start using your fingers you open up a whole new world of sounds. You can play those same open chord shapes that you've been playing since you started your guitar journey, but suddenly you can pick out individual notes, access specific melodies within the chords, and create entirely fresh, new compositions. It really is exciting to see it come together, and in this course, we take you from the ground up, as a beginner to the technique.

Above all, keep learning and keep having fun! 😀🎸🙃
I just picked up my guitar again after months of procrastination 😭😭anyway first lesson was fun. I am committing myself to do the whole course. Wishing myself all the best😭❤️
You got this!
same haha
How are you doing now?😆
We procrastinate bcoz learning and mastering guitar(or any other musical instrument) requires a lot lot patience, it's not easy like eating a burger 😐
The procrastination part is so relatable 😂😂
Been a (bad) electric guitar player for more than 10 years, just learned a few songs and riffs I like. God am I bad on a acoustic guitar, it's ten times harder and the string hurts. I begin here and now. Hope I'll manage to stay focused, it feels like learning from scratch.
Thank you for making all this free. Highly appreciated !
So far, I'm having a harder time on my left hand than my right hand. Surprisingly, the finger movements of the right hand seem natural to me.
Update pls
Thank you for sharing these lessons with us for free. It is very important to climb the stairs patiently, one by one. No one should rush to play the guitar well. If the foundation of a building is solid, that building is a good and durable building.
I am a beginner who is learning guitar. I can play some random rhythm. doing the same exercised makes me very boring but your course the the style u play make me energetic. Thank you for your wonderful style to help me learn Lots of love from India.
I have always Luved an Acoustic Guitar and have always wanted to learn to play. Sweet Baby James was my first Album and Concert in early 70s. At 69yrs of age and 50 some odd years later I want to learn before I have to leave this world. This seems like a Great Place to start, I bought a Beautiful Solid Cedar and Mahogany Guitar. As I prepare to Retire next Year I want to grow old with my new Guitar and a Beautiful Sound. Any input on learning or advice would be much Appreciated. And I Thank The LORD for this Channel. 🙏🏽🙏🏽
For anyone struggling to transition from D-major to D-minor:
An easy way to get started is to leave the ring finger string B-3rd fret, leave the middle finger string G-2nd fret and slide your pointer up and down from high string E-1st&2nd frets which changes the chord from minor->major respectively. When your pointer is on string E-1st fret, you are correctly fretting a D-minor. When you slide down to fret 2, it's not the correct way to fret a D-major but it's easier to transition as you're only moving one finger and not two.
If you wish to fret both chords "correctly" and transition, think of your pointer and middle fingers as "dials" and you're turning the dial as you transition. Your ring finger never moves, but as you move your midde finger from string E-fret 2 to string G-fret 2, your pointer turns upwards as it lands on string E-fret 1.
Your method makes it interesting and easy to learn but for the speed. Thank you. Am watching from Yaounde Cameroon. It's July 20th 2024
This is just what I was looking for...great presentation...thank you.
This is exactly what I needed! Thank you
Great lesson Thomas! Though I'm at intermediate level I'll definitely continue to check out the finger style lessons regardless. I'm sure as it progresses they'll be something there for me for sure. Also gives me time to complete 2 other course I'm at the tail end of so all works out great for me. That said, keep up the great work and thanks for all you do!
Hey Thomas, great lessons. I think your teaching paced is just nice meaning well explained, clear, not rushing unlike other channels for rhe fingerstyle ia pretty fast..Happy to chance upon your channel, good excellent teaching! Doris
Now I have started my aim is to complete all lessons until satisfied. Regardless of difficulty. Thank you.
Very good lessons , the way you are teaching is simply superb 👍👍👍
Thank You So Much. Gives me a start working on some fingerstyle picking after 4 months of learning basic chords & some movable power chords.
Excited
What a neat explanation! Thank you so much❤
I'm going to follow this lessons, thancks!
Great video ,thanks for
Thank you so much for sharing these valuable lessons for free❤ love ya!
thank you so much!
No y’all are saving my life I love these lessons
thanks i am really grateful to you
This is what i need, thank you so much
A big Thanks and love from INDIA
That was awesome 💯💥🙏🙏🙏
Thanks 🙏🏻
Thank you very much
I think this is a little too beginner for me, but to anyone who doesn't like doing the D minor, it's really good for fingerstyle of any type. Over time you'll see you can make some really good sounds if you incorporate other notes around it, and it's also just a beautiful chord.
So why are you here, it literally said level 1, can't you read?
@@OTB2002 because it could mean level 1 of someone who has experience playing but no experience whatsoever in this style. But this wasn't geared towards beginners of this style, but beginners at the guitar.
Regardless of my experience level, I always start new courses at the Lvl 1. Working through the course from the beginning, even if it's too easy to begin with, is great practice 🤘
@@OTB2002 Exactly...came to act over here lol
Thankyou for teaching us❤️ sir
great content
I think I can learn free fingerstyle guitar by this course...nice explanation 👍
Thank you so much for this!!! This is exactly what I need!
I bought my first guitar last year. I learned the 7 basic open chords and to play a few easy songs like Wild Things, Zombie and Ed Sheeran’s Perfect and a few others.
After that I struggled trying to learn the F chord, the B and Bm chord, power chords or to do the spider walk exercise. I could not find what I should do next.
After three weeks with seemingly no progress I quit….
I picked up my guitar again last week and started doing the spider walks exercises again. I finally did my first successful one last night and I screamed out of joy.
Then today your video pops up in my feed. Perfect! A clear path forward again!
I just started this lesson today. Great explanation and I'm pretty sure i would be able to play fingerstyle guitar by the end of this course!!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm thrilled that the lesson resonated with you and I appreciate your confidence in the course. Wishing you all the best on your fingerstyle guitar journey!
❤❤❤🎉🎉

I have just purchased this course on your website. I have dabbled a bit with finger style guitar but not consistently. Can’t wait to get started. Thanks Thomas and the rest of the team.😁

Exercise with metronome is wonderful
I love fingerstyle Guitar!
Currently I am really getting into the Caged system and familiarity of using it for lead… but Finger picking an Acoustic is such a beautiful and cathartic way to play… I will be going through all these lessons… thank you!
You can do it!
Ok, Lesson 1 done!
Thanks for this. I am applying the p-i-m-a nomenclature (aka. T-i-m-r or Thumb-index- middle-ring fingers). Big hello from the UK 🇬🇧 .
Awesome job on Lesson 1! Keep it up and keep those fingers dancing on the strings! Hello from the UK! 🇬🇧
Thanks for excellent tutorial was searching from long back it’s helpful
Glad it was helpful!
Subscribed. Thanks for the introduction alone. The way you explained the finger placement made it so natural. I'm going to practice just that D Dm exercise up and down the neck before I move to lesson 1.
Awesome! Thank you!
Excellent instruction, very clear and well paced 🙏
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks duude _i came tday
Thank you teacher ❤🎉
Any time!
Hey Thomas! I really like this fingerstyle course and this help me a lot by the way I started today only and watched two videos. I want to ask do you give online courses for acoustic guitar? I will be waiting for your reply. Thsnks for the course❤❤
Very good lesson 😃
Thank you! 😃
hey guys, excited for this, just trying to expand my skills for my electric playing. quick question though. i always anchor my little finger when im doing finger style, is this habit ok or should i try and get out of it and float more? thanks for the courses they rock.
Hey Christopher, good work its always worth broadening your horizons! It's an okay habit to have and not the end of the world if you do it but generally we'd advise to not anchor you little finger and get used to hovering above the strings as will help keep your hand more relaxed and increase your mobility picking. It might feel weird at first but is definitely more comfy in the long run :) Hope this helps, Cam
Thankyou you make it look easy. Do you pick 2nd and 3rd finger sideways under your nail?
segundo video que miro de la serie y entendi todo gracias
Hi thanks for the video
I thnik there were no enough info about the d major cord and the d minor i hope there is video for that
thankiu sir i have searched many videos about finger style but they ask money ...today i m starting my journey
All the best!!!!
Great Thomas! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. I can't find the free material for download.
Hey! we don't offer as much free material alongside the free lessons anymore you can find out more here: yourguitaracademy.com/blog/announcements/important-course-update
I can't express my feeling
Thanks is just not word for your hardwork and quality of content
My suggestion:- please increase volume
i've been playing fingerstyle for 3 years and now I want to start learning how to arrange a song, where which unit/level should I start on your channel? Thanks 🙏
Tbh my right hand coordination is really great tho my left hand sucks. I was able to play with the right hand easily. But my left hand was messing up the chords A LOT
'at's us nai! :)
Great lesson, Thomas - although I've already got these basic skills down fairly well I'll definitely keep watching the series as there's bound to be loads I'm not so sure on later in the course and, anyway, going over the simple stuff again never did anyone any harm. One thing I did notice, though, is that you didn't mention the option of planting the pinky down on the guitar body/pickguard to help keep the hand in a constant position with the right fingers next to the right strings. Was that a conscious decision - i.e. not something you necessarily recommend doing right from the outset?
Hey Cathal! Great stuff, the difficulty definitely ramps up with each unit in this course so be sure to stay tuned for those :) With the planting of the little finger, I'd recommend against planting your pinky down as you're taking away a finger you might need to pick a string and can also add a bit of unwanted tension in the hand but it's not the end of the world if it feels comfortable to you, and you're not running into any issues then its no worries! :) hope this helps, Cam
Good starting lesson! would have been nice if the level of your voice was turned up a bit more. Have to crank my volume way up now to be able to hear what you're saying
can we start learning this, I'm an absolute beginner...
I don't know if you would reply but I have a question. I have a basic knowledge of chords. But I don't like the feeling of my pick touching the strings while strumming. It gives me a ick. So will I be able to catch up with finger picking??
Is it okay to switch the positions of the first and second finger so you only have to move one finger when switching chords?
From India❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏
Have you stopped the free access to the tabs? As I cannot find them. if you have no worries, thanks for the videos . I think they will help me.
Can we look at the our right hand while we are picking
You guys are doin the lords work
Hey 👋, I’m an absolute beginner and always wanted to learn fingerstyle guitar. Do I really have to learn regular strumming pattern first or can I just start with fingerpicking. Also, will these lessons require to know chords prior or can I learn along? Thanks for the amazing content and passion. 🙏🙏
Hi Utba! If you love the sound of fingerstyle guitar then we say go for it! It's really important to stick with what gives you the passion to play and practice! However, this course does assume some chord knowledge but we do have the chord diagrams and tabs on our YGA Club here club.yourguitaracademy.com/courses/acoustic-fingerstyle-level-1
Hey mate, good tutorial! I find my fingers kind of stick together and can get in the way of each other, but not in the way of my thumb- is that okay? I can’t tell if I’m doing something wrong
iam fully a bigginer can i try this course?
Where can I find an online drum machine with this preset to practice?
Hii bro I have a problem in my guitar that G-string sounding as D-string can you fix the problem guitar type acoustic company yamaha fs100c
Thanks you for the lesson
Any beginner fingerstyle song suggestions to practice ?
Now, while picking G string my fore-finger touches the D as well. Basically my fingers crosses through the other strings as well where they have to concentrate on their own strings only.
How am I supposed to stop this?
Why volume is too low
Where can I download the backing track and which software do you use to control the playback timing? Appreciate the lessons and thanks for the efforts.
hi there! You can access the backing tracks here club.yourguitaracademy.com/courses/acoustic-fingerstyle-level-1 and we have the tracks synced to a tab player that can speed up, slow down and loop the music!
This is so helpful. Thank you guys i have been searching for good lessons for a long while finally i will be able to practice and become good at fingerstyle. Again THANK YOU SO MUCH 😭😭❤❤
I love it, but where should we get the beat for exercise from. Also I had to put my volume at 100% but I heard little. Please increase the volume.
Hey, thanks for letting me know about the volume issue! I'll make sure to increase it in the upcoming videos.
As for the beat, it is available here alongside all the other course material for this course! - www.guitarclub.io/courses/acoustic-fingerstyle-level-1
May god bless you and me also i do will it today morning 🫂
Good 🤍🤍🤍🫡
I have troubles with the D chord, the middle finger on the E string, I'm struggling to exerce enough force on it for extended period of times. Gotta keep training I guess it should become easier and easier.
it definitely comes with practice, but you shouldn't need *that* much force to get the note to ring out. Often with the D chord the problem is your 3rd finger is touching the high E string and stopping it ringing out - I'd definitely check that!
Where can I get the drum beat? Please help!
Which guitar is this
sir vincent van gogh teaching guitar what more can i ask ....
Hey 👋, I have a query, i have seen many people keeping nails for plucking the strings on the right hand, do i have to do the same, or i have to cut the nails ?
It's really up to you, I think there's some tonal differences but whichever feels most comfortable to you! :)
Good stuff. I didn't know Danny had a partner. Glad I found this guy also. You and Danny have really helped me out. Much Love from the USA...
Hi Thomas,do you pick the strings with the pad of the finger or the nail?
Thanks for your question! I usually pick the strings with the pad of my finger because it allows for a smoother and more controlled sound.
When I try to pluck, it sounds very muted, and not resonating. Is there something wrong with my left hand?
Which kind of guitar will be suitable can you please suggest?
Preferably an acoustic for this course but you could also use an electric if that is what you have! As long as it has 6 strings, is in tune and comfortable to play yo should be all good! 😊 👍
@@yga thank you so much... Sir which will be good for fingerstyle nylon string or steel string
@@SubhankarBose2000 I would reccomend steel strings, but whichever feels best under your fingers :)
@@yga Ok sir thank you so much
How do I make it sound clear? Like, I pluck the string and the sound is dull, like I'm holding my hand on the strings, not letting it vibrate(?) completely.
Sorry, I don't know how to explain, english isn't ny first language T-T
I’m strange, i think, been learning guitar for a year now and found it easier for me, to finger pick rather than using a pick on individual strings and easier than strumming too??? May i ask though, I’ve always used my pinky to support my picking hand on the G body.. is this a no no? i struggle when my hand is floating in thin air… Am i missing something here? Truly great quality lessons thanks for these.. NOODLES
Hey Noodles! Good question. You can definitely argue that resting your pinky like that is extra effort and can cause tension in your hand, but if you feel like it's comfortable and isn't causing you to tense up then it's not a huge problem. One of my all time favourite players John Petrucci anchors his pinky when he's picking (with a plectrum) and he's one of the very best players in the world!

Should I try to learn this if I’m a begginer with little to no guitar experience?
Hi Yuvraj, this course does assume some fundamental knowledge and experience - if you're just starting out I would recommend our 30 day beginner challenge course here club.yourguitaracademy.com/courses/30-day-beginner-challenge that will get you up and running much more quickly!
What if you don't know any chords how do you learn
I have no trouble with chord changes when strumming but really struggle when fingerpicking. Is this normal?
It's completely normal to struggle with fingerpicking when you're used to strumming. It requires a different level of coordination and finger dexterity. Keep practicing and you'll get the hang of it!
Great lesson!
Unfortunately, my fingertips seem to think otherwise. Of course, that's only part of the journey.
Fingertips can be stubborn sometimes. But don't let that discourage you. Keep practicing and you'll get there. Rock on!
You don't rest your picking hand on the guitar?
It's on of those things that comes down to personal preference, some people say its better not too as less tension and more freedom of movement but really whichever feels best for you:)
It's quite hard of a habit to kick once you start using all of your fingers (imo)
But when I do the sound is coming muted and very low
Sir can uou please tell me that why i am not able to match with your speed. Can you plss help me for it. Please 😢
Edit: motch=match
How much time daily n how many days u advise to practice?
I would recommend as much as is comfortable for you here! Usually 20-30 minutes a day if you can, but don’t burn yourself out too much!
Teacher yout sound not perfect ❤️❤️
Why is the Audio sooo low in all these tutorials.
yah this course is really free but the volume is nvm...💀🤦
