Here's what we can VERIFY about Purina dog food safety claims

- Concerns in viral TikTok videos and in a public Facebook group with tens of thousands of members allege Purina’s Pro Plan pet food has sickened hundreds of animals.
The claims, first reported on the website eFoodAlert.com, range from dogs vomiting, having diarrhea and seizures - and in some cases dying - after pet owners say the dogs consumed food produced by Purina.
Purina has now responded to the allegations.
Here’s what we can VERIFY so far about the Purina dog food safety claims.
On Jan. 5, 2024, Purina responded to safety concerns being raised in viral posts, calling the claims “online rumors.”
“These false statements may be creating unnecessary stress for pet parents. There are no health or safety issues with any of our products, and they can continue to be fed with confidence,” the St. Louis-based company said in a statement posted to its website.
Purina said the source of some claims were, "well-intentioned pet parents who are genuinely concerned and trying to be helpful, while others may be trying to create chaos and distrust of certain brands as an opportunity to sell their own products.”
As of Jan. 15, the Facebook group called Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time had received more than 700 unsubstantiated reports of animals getting sick, and nearly 200 pets dying, supposedly after consuming Purina’s Pro Plan pet food, according to the website eFoodAlert.com.
Purina said there is no evidence supporting the reports.

My veterinarian verified Purina as a perfectly fine food for most pets. Certainly fewer recalls than most others, including the boutique raw diets.
@@californigirl Vets don’t know the best foods because they never study animal nutrition. Look at the ingredients on the back of the food and you will find a lot of fillers and not much meat. Corn, oats, by-products, natural flavors (which aren’t identified) is what you will find. Maybe do your own homework instead of believing what your vet tells you.
I’ve never trusted Purina for being a safe dog food.
It makes me so angry that Purina is not taking these complaints seriously and gaslighting the victims. Pets are our children and any harm to them should have legal consequences as serious.
Nothing in the report implied the company wasn't taking the reports seriously, but the claims aren't coming with verification , also called 'receipts'. Some video and a bunch of comments about sickness, where are the vet records, necropsies, lab tests?
Receipts are expensive. Most pet owners cannot afford the testing , but there should be a regulatory agency for pet food the same as human food. Most people will just switch foods and file complaints. Rich people can afford to feed foods with human grade ingredients.@@californigirl

@@californigirlMy main concern, quite frankly, is that they're not being proactive. They're not coming out and saying "We've received X number of complaints directly and we know this is something being spread on social media. At this time, we have no reason to believe there is an issue with the food. If you're concerned, please reach out to your pet's veterinarian and send us a sample and file a claim with us at [contact info], so we can investigate further." Them not doing that feels like some low-level gaslighting. Like they're not even willing to publicly address that there's a concern among their customers, even if they're not willing to take responsibility. Ignoring it entirely and not being transparent about the number of reports they've received is sus, at best, and actively malicious omission of information, at worst.
My dog is sick after the last bag of food and my vet said there's so many different things or toxins that could be the reason that it's impossible to test for them all. @@californigirl
My big dog was getting ill on Purina. Vomiting, lethargy, ect. A switch to another brand, suddenly no problems.

My dog is fine
Those were some of the symptoms people were complaining about. Along with, bloody stool, seizures, and some dogs have even died. I switched yesterday, it's better to be safe than sorry.
My dog is 16 years old on the cheapest Purina dog food she has all her teeth she's able to jump up on things at that age and she only has allergies now what does normal for Old Dogs she's outlived most

I just got a puppy and the first food I bought was the Purina- she started getting so skinny, started not acting well- then stopped eating it- so I of course switched. She’s just fine now. My other dog is a 17 year black lab- eats whatever I give- he wouldn’t eat it at all. It’s like he smelled something in the food.
Shame on Purina for continuing to lie to the public and not issue a voluntary recall. This is criminal given how many people have sick dogs and cats from eating their food. Thankfully my goldendoodle hasn’t been on PPP for many years, but she ate it as a puppy and was never well while being on their puppy formula & this was 7 years ago!
ITS NOT JUST PURINA….theres a list of companies effected as they all get their vitamin mixes etc from the same places.
This claim is absolutely true. My 6 month old dog had a seizure after 1 serving of Purina Proplan. I wasnt sure exactly what caused it until i saw this report. Thanks for sharing. Luckily my dog is young. He survived and is doing just fine now after going back to a different (non-purina) food.

And that's probably cuz you fed adult dog food
Your puppy really needs its nutrients at a young age and if you're giving it Adult food it's going to have serious issues with its hormonal imbalance
They depend on a very specific diet
Companies will deny until they can’t.
Thank you for being so honest and reporting on this. It helps owners to be able to make an informed decision to just switch for a while until this blows over. Shame on Purina. You are going to lose the bulk of your clients by behaving like this.

Repeat of claims from years and years ago. Action has never been taken, Purina has always dismissed customer reports of animal illnesses and death related to their foods.

My 2 Cats Passed Away 6 years ago they are eating Purina. Keep all paperwork and receipts. I remember I saw at news Hispanic channel one Woman when Hiden video cámara récorded how the Company in China is making the Dry Food in same container at day before they make the Paint for Nails. The Best you can do is make in advance is cook Fresh Chicken or Turkey with sweet Potatoes 🍠 also I recommend UA-cam Veterinary Secret he will be teaching you how to make fresh Dog Food 🤔🤔🤔😀

Yes, other brands have been reported for causing illness, however, it has predominantly been pets that eat Purina that have gotten sick/died.

Most likely because all these brands are under the Purina banner, or they all hired the same co-packer (the factory which process s foods for many p t food companies)

The FDA and Purina will never admit their wrong. Selling this crap on the market means big bucks to them. Dog owners, please get educated as I did. There are excellent foods for dogs, but they are not sold at the chain stores. I now cook for my dogs.

I lost a pup who was not even 2 yrs old within 36 hours of eating Purina Pro Plan so wasnt able to get him in to see a vet as I originally didnt realize that it was the food. When he passed away, he had actual liquid feces coming out of his nose.

Veterinary Secrets channel is also going to be following up on this. There are a lot of good videos about pet nutrition and other subjects, including remedies using natural ingredients rather than chemicals. I’ve been giving our cats/dog more meat since reading and learning about pet food.
I was feeding our 3 dogs a very expensive brand of dog food 15 years ago when I started researching how it was made because one dog was having seizures, another developing tumors all over his body and the other with back issues. I was appalled over what I found out! Started making their food and the seizures stopped and he lived to be 19! Back issues stopped and he lived to be 17! Unfortunately the tumors were cancer and that one died 😢
I don’t make all the pet food but I supplement our cats/dog with meat and other appropriate foods. I was pretty horrified when I started learning about pet food. Cats were going blind and dying when they first started making it because they weren’t including a nutrient cats NEEDED and the manufacturers didn’t even know about it …. somehow, cats managed to feed themselves fairly well until food was made “for them” (for $$, mostly out of corn, which cats can’t live on).

My cat was on a Purina dry food for 5 years , and he got so sick. I am now giving him Iams
None of the big name food brands are good. Research it. Take a very close look online about the history of the food you’re feeding, you will be shocked.
Iams does animal experimentation, you should check it out. Those big-name pet food companies are the devil in disguise 👹

Get the regulations defining 'food' for pets. Ground walnut shells, floor sweepings, ground euthanized animals can all be included. Find locally sourced, ethically sustained suppliers. Support what's right, not what's easy.
We have always used Purina. We switched from Purina Pro to Purina One due to the cost of feeding our older dog and a growing puppy who is now 1 year and 9 months. The older dog is doing well on Purina One and so is the pup who is now bigger than all of the pups in the litter he came from.
What I would like to know is if that is the only thing they feed them or do they also give them what they eat or pet treats. A lot of stuff we eat or drink can cause those symptoms and/or be fatal to dogs.
I'm similar, but I use Purina Dog Chow, Beef and the Lamb with all our rescues aged 11,10,9,and 7. Used since day 1 we got each one. The 11 year old we got at 4 1/2 weeks.
ALL are in excellent health and have NEVER had any problems with the Dog Chow. PLUS, we've done rescues for 34 years and all of them were Purina dogs and lived at least 5+ years longer than their expected life span. IDK???
I think they should considdr where the illnesses occurred, whether there was possibility of catching some kind of illness from other animals at a park, neighborhood where pets run freely, day care, boarding, drinking from standing water or puddles. My small dogs have been a lot healthier since I got a place with a big yard and stopped going to public places. But roaming cats
omr into my yard, one of my dogs apparently got rat poison years ago, another caught leptospirosis, and one got coccidia and I don't know where it csme from.

A year ago, one of my cats got sick, which led me to feed them homemade. If this were about peanut butter or breakfast cereal, would people keep feeding it to their kids until they saw "proof?"
If your pet is ill, report it to the manufacturer and send them a SAMPLE of the food, but DO NOT send the whole bag back! Make sure your vet is aware of exactly what food your dog eats, as well. If you can afford it, have a sample tested by an independent lab.

They need actual proof that the food is defective and that it is the that is the food which has made the dogs sick, not just concerns like at this point.

My cat is in the hospital right now and was eating Purina naturals kibble and Purina Fancy Feast, I asked the vet if it could be the food and she said it's possible, waiting on more test.
My dogs and cats are both on Purina dry food and wet food I have not had any problems none of my animals are sick, they have been eating Purina for around 2 years now
Get them off of that. Don't buy chain store kibble or products made in China.

Just because they never got sick doesn' t mean its not going to happen, and if you loved your animals you would want to provide them with the safest food option

I've always used this brand..But lately my Feral Cats are not eating it all and I don't know if a couple are not here all of a sudden!!... So what does it take for it to be on recall list, I won't know if this is harming them as they are ferral!!.. and so do our pets die in order to say Hey ...there's a problem with our food!!!!!... I have a senior dog on this and many other rescue pets..This All should Be tested before it hurts or we feed to our PETS!!!!

My cat was on the Purina indoor Hairball like one and Fancy Feast. Itching and tossing cookies a lot. Changed to Blue Buffalo 9/16/23. But still itching a lot and some throwing up. Come to find out this Month all the issues. Changed her to Farmina dry and wet 1/24/24. Had bloodwork and currently waiting on Heavy Metals test.

I use the regular Purina dog food. My 4, from 20lbs to 120lbs, are all fine. But I'll be watching them VERY closely and may be buying a new brand next time until I"m sure it is safe.
Same here. We switched from Pedigree years ago, when our Lab/Shepard mix developed a severe allergy to their food. Then we switched to Purina. We've been feeding the pack (4 dogs, 75-150 lbs) Purina's 100% Beef ever since (5 yrs) and have yet to have any issues. By, as a retired Vet Tech and Kennel manager for over 30 years, this scares the crap out of me. My cats also eat Purina products ☹️ Been looking into different options. Just do your research, folks 🙏🐾
@@wendygore2709 I used to get mine Pedigree. I felt like it was messing up stomachs on mine. I give them a little canned as a snack late in the day. It's pedigree. But I gave that up since my largest, a husky/shepherd, gets diarrhea from that. A little 100% pumpkin cures it. But still, it's definitely not agreeing with him.
I was rotating the beef and the chicken. We're using up a bag of the chicken currently. And I just bought a bag of Kibbles & Bits. I agree about research. I keep meaning to replace these kinds of brands with something better.
@@wendygore2709The problem is that the complaining people are not doing anything to prove that it is the food. The leaders are telling people NOT to send medical records to Purina and not to send Purina any samples of the supposedly bad food, and they are not doing much if anything to test it themselves. They are telling people to go and buy new bags of the same food, looking for the same batch numbers. Until that is tested, that won't prove anything. One person said that because Purina reimbursed them the cost of the food and paid a medical bill, that is proof. It is not! My local chain pet supply store will take back food even if your dog just does not like it. It is good customer relations, not admission of guilt! They should talk to a lawyer about what "real"evidence is. They are putting the cart before the horse by talking about a class action already.

Not only Purina ... It may also be many other brands as well . They are all being tested by a 3 rd party . They think it may be in the vitamin mix a lot of brands use the same vitamin mix. There are lists out there of companies that dont use the mix. or start making uour own in the mean time. 🙏🏽

Purina: We have investigated ourselves and found that we did nothing wrong
I have had several cans of the Purina EN dog food that appear as though air was left in the can and the outer edges are dark brown/black and dried. This seems to occur right where the tab is on the can. The can is not compromised and there are no dents in the can. This occurs with at least 3 cans of the 12 can case. My dog has shown symptoms of nausea and licking behavior do to nausea. Is this food contaminated? I can't get Purina on the phone, still on hold after 29+ minutes. I have emailed them through their web site. waiting for a response.

Purina ONE True Instinct Natural High Protein with Real Turkey & Venison Dry Dog Food and can. Three dogs …two had diarrhea. One later continued with diarrhea for five days. Had to get med to help stop diarrhea. Stopped food. Had been noticing the change of appearance (color/ texture)of the dry food. ????

In Texas at Tractor Supply all Purina was pulled off the shelves for 2 or 3 months. So Purina and Tractor Supply know!!
My daughters young German Shepherd has been eating this food and he is regularly getting sick, its off and on.
It's not just dogs it's cats also and rabbits . Most people we know will never use Purina food again
It's not just Purina. Twelve other brands of dog food are now on that list. Research it here on UA-cam. There are plenty of videos on the matter by both veterinarians and certified canine nutritionists.

Two of our cats had blood in their stools we were feeding them purina urinary biscuits both had been taken to the vet. I had run out of cat biscuits and iams urinary was on special so I got that no more problems with blood in their stools I will not be going back to purina cat food
I feed my males cats a urinary food, I had bought the Purina One Urinary Health to feed them, they wouldn't touch it and they eat absolutely everything, Not buying anymore Purina anything.

40 years and I have hsd NO problems with ANY Purina food, from livestock chows to my cat's Fancy Feast. Before I'll believe some random TikTok tripe, ( sure because tt is so reliable ...) I'll believe Purina's decades of source chain, documentation, and testing.
Stop using processed dog food! Go with real human grade food or raw. Synthetic vitamins and preservatives are nasty. There are other options.

That dry dog food is grain based, dogs aren't bred to eat grains & most is GMO with all being sprayed with glyphosate
I can't understand why someone doesn't get totally independent tests done. There are lots of labs that can do it. I would if it happened to my animals.

@@marianneporter26 I'm sure if someone started a GoFundMe page to try and find out what is affecting the animals to the point of death in a lot of cases, it would not take too long to raise enough money for the testings. Any lab would also know what is harmful. Not too hard to get samples of different biscuits. How do you think the vets that are involved are doing it. Unfortunately I personally would prefer an unbiased opinion. Wouldn't you if your heart and soul died a horrific death or was close. 🤔
Dr Judy Morgan is doing that. It is extremely expensive and she’s taken it on to get it done.
Purina has been making garbage food for decades. Not only in the dog food line but in the horse world as well. Purina doesn't have the best nutritional department. They do have the best advertising department.

Wish I seen this sooner feed my dog Dog chow lamb and rice high protein and she was eatting it at first stool was firm but mustard yellow then she had gotten diarrhea and gas plus this brand have her anal sac issues I have to express them instead of them expressing themself
