      Yeah I agree, I actually think his lack of distinct morals makes him a lot more realistic than many of the other characters, plenty of people in the world don't really think about their stance on morality until they're forced to think about it, so it makes Draco feel more believable than a lot of the other characters.

      Yes, when Harry, Ron, Draco and Hermione were children, the thing hasn't meant enemy or friends, they were just opposite type of classmates...
      But after some years, Draco turned out to be an evil character, but I loved him very much. I don't understand, why no one understands that he had no other choice. He is actually very alone.
      He will be in my heart forever.

    To the person who made this video,
    (If possible) Can you also make a video about when draco was actually concerned to harry when he asked if harry fainted but when draco turn around and saw the others laughing he then turns and started mocked him.(because only a few notice that part)
    Also when his mother asked him to join Voldemort's side the the last movie...he hesitates for a while and looked around if someone will stop him from going to that side, but when no one calls him he then went to Voldemort's side. It's really sad he just wants to understand him, be free, and don't feel any pressure and be his true self without having others forcing him to.
    There are other parts about how draco is not actually evil but is a bully, a bully but still cares for others and sometimes actually help harry and the others
    He just have an lot of pressure from his family and his peers, and he wants to impress (I forgot the other term) his father by making it look that he is a bad guy.

    We get a very powerful messege from him : No matter how many ethical mistakes you have made in your past, just decide to be a better person. This is an inspiration to all.

      @@HillsAliveYT To this day, I will always love the deleted scene of Draco running to give Harry his wand in the last. Draco outright realizing where he truly sides after spending his whole life believing the opposite.
      He was the rich, pampered, asshole bully who repeated the cruelty he was taught before finally seeing with his own eyes what those ideals really ended with, and in the end, he found a way out and broke the cycle.
      That's another reason why people like him, his character is consistent, his arc is believable, and let's be honest, compared to the mostly flawless heroes, who doesn't relate to the screwup who did some really dumb shit in their teenage years that they look back on and cringe at. It always amazes me that J. K. Rowling created such a compelling character without intending to *or even realizing that she'd done so*. A lot of her fans credited her with creating compelling morally grey characters, without realizing that she was actually trying to create a simplistic good vs. evil morality tale and failing because she didn't realize that some of her "good" characters' actions were objectively bad. Shaun has a brilliant analysis of her work that you might enjoy. ua-cam.com/video/-1iaJWSwUZs/v-deo.html&ab_channel=Shaun

    I think the reason why a lot of people who like him like him because of how he's depicted in the movies, and I don't mean Tom Felton. In the books, all of his "redeeming" actions are made essentially for self-preservation, even if we all want to think it was because he was a good person deep down. Like when he says he doesn't recognize Harry at Malfoy Manor, it's because he knows Harry is the only one who can get him out of being a death eater. He's the only one who can defeat Voldemort. But in the movie version, there are just a couple scenes that aren't in the book that really show that (the movie version of) Draco *is* really a good person deep down. Like when he hesitates to join the death eaters after Harry "dies," that's not the act of someone who's trying to stay alive. If he only cared about staying alive, he would've joined Voldemort immediately after seeing Harry's dead body, but he didn't. He was actually trying to do the right thing. The second one is in the room of requirement a little earlier. In the movie, Harry asks him very pointedly why he pretended he didn't recognize Harry at Malfoy Manor earlier, and he doesn't answer. Goyle says something like "ignore him" to kind of get him back on track, and the fact that Goyle even needs to do that makes you infer that Draco pretended not to recognize Harry because he genuinely wanted to do the right thing. I think that line was just meant to clarify the earlier scene, but it still changed draco's motivation and therefore his character in the books vs the movies. Tbh in the books, he honestly sucks. Like, you definitely feel bad for him, but he's just so much nastier and cowardly in the books, and like I said, his motivations are selfish. I still love his character, but for a totally different reason than why I love his movie character. Anyways those are my two cents~~

    • @luciamusic3821
      @luciamusic3821 3 роки тому +16

      (disclaimer: this is such a late reply but we move)...I agree with you definitely. Even though the movies do portray Draco in a much more sympathetic and morally aware light, I still really like how they handled that while still sticking to the heart of the books. Draco hasn't got a 'redemption arc' per say because if he did have one, it would honestly be unrealistic, which is why I'm glad they kept that deleted wand throwing scene out. His entire arc is basically summarised in the conversation Dumbledore has with Draco on the astronomy tower, and shows clear signs of Draco knowing right and wrong. His options are diminished drastically afterwards when the entirety of his time is spent with death eaters who are even more powerful than before. So truly, little subtle bits of writing such as Draco ambiguously dismissing Harry at Malfoy Manor, and him "curtly nodding' to the Golden trio 19 years later nicely conclude his arc of maturing into a better, educated person.

    This hit home on so many levels. J.K Rowling has no right to complain.. she's the one who wrote him this way. Beautiful analysis of my number 1 favorite character in the HP series. I remember feeling frustrated when reading about Draco because, just as the story is getting good.. Rowling would cut to something stupid like what Ron was eating ect.. haha.. I wanted more Draco, but Rowling is just so stingy with his character. On the other hand perhaps not having everything revealed to us about him retains a sense of mystery and intrigue and leaves readers wanting more.

    • @HillsAliveYT

      Yes I completely agree. It's interesting that JK has a somewhat negative reaction to his popularity given the structure of the series, I mean she made the story more complex and mature so it could age with the audience but Draco arguably has the most mature and complex character arc in the series and she doesn't seem to understand why that would be appealing.

He's not a evil monster like his aunt Bella. We aren't surprised by that because he never really DID anything before (other than talk a lot of trash). Rowling's describes him as an adult collecting dark arts artifacts but he keeps them in display cases and never uses them, he collects books about alchemy but never really tries to create the Stone. I see a pattern here of someone who wants to be and do but never does. And I think you are right he is relatable.

    Thank you so much for this lovely video! You really hit the nail on it’s head!
    There is also that his bad actions are punished in a cosmic sense. For each book his family is worse off than it was in the previous one. And the narrator who follows Harry calls Malfoy out on his bs and when he runs his mouth too much he gets beaten into a pulp or hexed into slugness. That’s also part of what makes him sympathetic to me. There are narrative consequences to his and his family's actions.
    One of my least favorite chapters is probably Sectumsempra because Harry loses what makes Draco sympathetic in my eyes. Harry slashes Malfoy’s face open. Fair. Draco was about to throw a torture curse at him (though if I put my conspiracy tin foil hat on I think Harry might have used sectumsempra eventually even if Draco didn’t use an unforgivable and that would paint Harry in too bad a light and make one too many teen girls swoon over poor pretty face Draco ergo cruciatus curse BUT THAT’S JUST A THEORY An Hp theory anyways). So Harry’s consequences is detention, a telling off and no quiddich because of the detention. However at the end of the chapter he is partying with his friends, kissing his dream girl, his friends approve and they won the quiddich cup. All those consequences became nothing.
    But yeah. Draco is probably one of my favorite characters ever, because he is so flawed in a deeply human way, just charismatic garbage, and the fact that JK did it unintentionally (or if I put the tin foil hat on again changed his story because of her fear of girls thinking “I can change him uwu”) just makes it better.

Like the “Saint Potter” stuff, his constant taunting, the unforgettable Skeeter interviews… yeah it was mean but there never was serious consequences like depression and all, the Trio stuck together. For me Draco is an appealing character because he is flawed and it seems that he does recognize his flaws to some degrees. Yes, there are some times he isn't morally right and does bad things, but he also overthinks these and often gets punished in some ways for them.
    Compared to for example Harry, things are different. I think in all the books Harry and his friends also do things that are morally incorrect. They also bully (explicitly Malfoy), are prejudiced, etc.
    But in Harrys case these things normally pass through without any doubting, mental reflection or punishment. And that also we know much better what Harry thinks than what Malfoy thinks. That is why it looks as if Harrys actions and thoughts might be okay, even if they are not from an objective point of view.
    In the end, there are the questions: Who do you prefer, a semi-evil villian that has to reflect on himself or a semi-good hero who doesn't? A guy that fails, breaks down and tries to get up again or a hero that is above doubt? A villain that might try his best (Draco does repeat his last year in Hogwarts) or a hero that estimates himself to be better than the rest. (Harry doesn't do his last year in Hogwarts, though he wants to be an auror...)

    • @HillsAliveYT
      @HillsAliveYT  3 роки тому +11

      Yes I completely agree! Most of the main characters don't drastically evolve throughout the story because they don't have to, and while they do exhibit problematic behaviors they never really reflect upon that, nor are they ever portrayed as being "bad" for more than a few minutes/pages.

    • @sanjoykumardas4018
      @sanjoykumardas4018 Рік тому

      They don't bully Malfoy, Malfoy bullies them and they stand up to him. I'm sorry, but since when was defending yourself and your friends considered morally incorrect? The closest thing Harry ever did to bullying is not reply to Colin enthusiastically. Prejudiced, Harry was never prejudiced. The Slytherin treated him badly so he started hating them. We're comparing Draco Malfoy, the rich spoiled brat who uses his father's money to get everything his way and Harry Potter, the kind, selfless hero who sacrifices himself for other people on a regular basis. It's not a question of a semi-evil villain who that has to reflect on himself or a semi- good hero who doesn't. It's about a semi-evil villain who doesn't want but HAS to reflect on himself or a completely good hero who doesn't HAVE to but does reflect on himself all the time. " A guy that fails breaks down and tries to get up again or a hero that is above doubt", seriously are we reading the same books? Dra co lives a perfect life and when he thinks that being a death eater is too much pressure for him, he decides to make the good side win. Harry, above doubt, have you lost your mind ?! Harry stands by his claim that Voldemort is back no matter how much ridicule he goes through for it. And seriously what the heck does Harry not going back to Hogwarts have to do with him supposedly being arrogant? Harry didn't ask the ministry to give him a job as a auror without finishing his education. The Ministry just saw that Harry was capable while Draco proved no such thing.

    • @sanjoykumardas4018
      @sanjoykumardas4018 Рік тому

      @@HillsAliveYT Harry always doubted himself while Draco thought he was the best person which he clearly isn't. Are we talking about the same person or was there a secret name swap that I never heard about? And why would they be portrayed as bad if they simply aren't bad. • @LisaMaierLiest
      @LisaMaierLiest Рік тому +1

      @@sanjoykumardas4018 Oh dear... this is a lot...
      First: I never said, Malfoy was not a bully.
      Second: Harry and his friends are not bullies themselves? So you consider starting a fight to get something you want not bullying? (Hermione / Milicent / Polyjuice incident.) Or knocking out your classmates with drugged cookies to steal their clothes - locking them up naked in a wardrobe as bully? (Same polyjuice incident.) There are way more... most of the times Draco is beaten up - though I think he never started a fight himself... (not 100% sure about this one though but I cannot recall one time.) Other famous instances: Ginny bewitching them into slugs and putting them into the luggage rack. Or Ron kicking his head while being invisible? Harry applauded the slug thing if I am not sure.
      Harry isn't prejudiced? He is thinking that all Syltherins look ... (not sure how it is translated - unpleasant?) in his first year.)
      Even at the end of the series some Slytherins are standing up against Voldemort and his people - and Harry doesn't give anything about them.
      There are quite a few instances like that either.
      Please - name 2 instances in the books where Harry is reflecting, if what he had done was right. And that is something that a main character who has the POV can do.
      It is not as easy to see in side characters.
      Okay... let's check it on Malfoys side. Let's say it is the pressure that makes him falter. He needs to repair that closet. But after he does, he is afraid the other students may get hurt or killed, because of what he did. Also he falters more - even without preasure. There is also some indication he is standing up against the Carrows. (Ginny never missed a chance to make Draco look bad. But she doesn't mention him, when she talks about the Crutiatus. Given their "relationship" it indicates that he also hasn't used it - otherwise Ginny would have mentioned it.)
      And when Harry doesn't go back to Hogwarts - he knows the people he might hunt will have a better qualification than him. And what qualifications did he GET on the field? What DOES he learn?
      The ministry most likely gives him the job so they look better themselves... some positive headlines. And he doesn't reflect on it.

    I agree with the majority of this analysis, but I do have something to add that got missed, as well as a disagreement with the conclusion. Yes, Draco's morality comes crashing into focus on the Astronomy Tower when he is supposed to kill Dumbeldore. But, that entire year saw him do terrible things. He Imperio's Rosemerta to get the cursed necklace to Katie (I think), only for her almost to die when she touches the object. His poisoned mead almost kills a fellow student, something that the rumour mill would have gotten out.
    Now, putting aside Dumbledore's absolutely horrific allowance of these events, the story is so limited by Harry's circle of events that we're never shown that these "failures" in killig the old man negatively impacted Draco. The stress and conflict he was under that year could easily be solely down to the fear of his own family's life and the Astronomy Tower event could be argued that it was simply his inability to do the deed himself, rather than a realisation that the act of murder was the problem. But someone who is squeamish about pulling a trigger doesn't get let off if they are fine with someone else doing the act, more so if they are able to order the act to be committed.
    And in a mirror to his mother's betrayal, Draco mis-identifying Harry could simply be about a young man who was near broken over the abuse and danger to his family. He (and his parents) simply wanted the war over and the madman out of their house. At no point is there ever really a sense that the Malfoys stopped believing their elitism and near Nazi-like beliefs, they just realised that following a madman crazy enough to bring about such a world was dangerous to their own health as much as to those they consider lesser.
    I'm not saying this is how it was at the end of the books, just pointing out that while yes, Draco does have the seeds of redemption and change about his story arc, it is in no way certain that he fully went down that path. He and Narcissa could simply have been bad people making the right decisions for the love of their family.

    I think Draco Malfoy not a bad character, in fact I think he was a great character, rather his character with evil or not is Up For Debate, but his actual character and the design of the character is not bad, he had a split-second decision does he want to stay with his family and hope that even under the darklord that his family is finally United and loved or did he want to leave his family and become loyal to Hogwarts knowing it would tear his family apart. He basically had to choose between the Hogwarts community and his family, in the end he may have chosen the wrong decision by most people but he chose love, he chose his mother and father who he loves..... what other decision can you truly make, I understand what he was thinking, you're supposed to turn your back on your family and defend Hogwarts because it's the morally right thing to do? No you forget about morality and you do whatever you can, you stay with your family until the last breath even if it means certain death.
    Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy would make a grate couple..

I believe that he will repair his past mistakes when he is an adult, I like that he does not raise his son like him, that's why his son will be a good person. I feel bad when he has to kill Dumbledore who he doesn't want, he's a boy who has no choice. He's not evil but he's had some bad times as he's going to join up with the Death Eaters. I’m sorry, but I really don’t see any of the redemption of Draco. He’s a racist, entitled punk, and he remains that for nearly the entire series. I feel like all the defenses of him are seriously just grasping at air.
    The defense of “he’s bad because he was raised bad,” can be valid to a certain extent-but that doesn’t mean you’re good, or even that you want to be.
    People in Draco’s world don’t like him because of who he is.
    He’s treated badly in response of what he does, and what he says.
    Some of his beliefs extend even further than his fathers.
    There’s really nothing throughout the story that warrants the depth of speculation for his character. He doesn’t kill Dumbledore because he doesn’t have the heart-or lack thereof-to do that. That then causes him to realism with he’s not as evil as Voldemort. But being less evil than the bad guys doesn’t make you good.
    If you find *genuinely* find Draco relatable...that’s a problem. I don’t agree with everything JK’s said after the books, but she’s spot on with this.

    I think the reason i like Draco is because he is like me in some ways, while Harry Potter is seen as the good guy, the hero and the perfect kid
    Draco is seen as the bad guy
    In my opinion the only reason Draco was a bully was to hide his own emotions and feeling
    And a clear thing is that people didn’t understand that
    While Draco was in the bathroom literally having a panic attack Harry just pretty much attacked him (verbally)
    In the end of the day the reason he had no choice was that his father had too much power over him
    JK should really watch this video and finally understand why people feel close to Draco
    In reality there are a lot of people who don’t have the perfect Harry Potter world
    They live in Draco’s world

    • @HillsAliveYT
      @HillsAliveYT  3 роки тому +8

      Yes I agree! And I think it's even more than him just wanting to hide his feelings, it's that he doesn't fully understand his feelings and know how to deal with them. He started off the story pretty emotionally crippled, and that in combination with the fact that he had only bad options in front of him made it even more complicated. And while most people would like to be Harry and handle suffering and adversity in the right way, it's much more realistic to have characters who are emotionally stunted and make bad choices. Honestly as much as I love the HP series I always found it incredibly bothersome that Harry was somehow perfectly well adjusted and almost always did the right things despite the fact that he was emotionally neglected and abused for his entire life, it was really difficult to suspend my disbelief for that.

He was raised in a very bad family and didn't really know any better but I feel like he could have made a change. But it wasn't his fault he became a death eater, Voldemort could have killed him and his family and he did love his family well, at least he loved his mom. And also I am one of the Drarry shippers. Harry and Draco always fascinated me, they didn't have a perfect relationship, but I felt like Draco and Harry did care about each other. I mean Harry literally saved him from a fire, and Draco didn't tell the death eaters that they had Harry all along. Instead he lied and just said no. Or idk. He didn't reveal anything. He knew though he just didn't say anything. I definitely felt like these two had something. And I am glad that we at least got to see Harry and Draco make peace with each other, and make Draco a better person as an adult. He seems to have raised his son well and seem to be a good husband towards his wife. The only thing that made me really upset is what Jk Rolling has said about Draco. Like she created the character and she doesn't even like him. Ik she said somewhere that she created him to represent her bullies in school, although the way she talks to her fans and says they shouldn't like him or that she doesn't understand why people like him its really sad. Like people can like whoever they like first of all, and second of all, Draco was misunderstood! He was forced into that life and he didn't choose to have that family. At least his mom was somewhat decent, but I do not like his dad at all. That's my thought on that though. Love Draco and the Harry Potter series!!! I especially love Drarry!!!❤

    I a gree with everything you say except that he is the most reliable character Ron is that's why he was everyone favourite until the movies ofcours but in the books Ron is my favourite character because to me he is the most real character he is not the best at anything except for chace and that the point of entire ark he always overshadowed by his siblings and his friends he want to get recognised he want attention because he lacks it the opposite of his best friend harry it's a problem that alot of people have me included

      Ron is a great character as well! Honestly I think a lot of the characters are relatable in the series, but I meant that Draco was the most relatable in the sense that most people don't just reflexively fall into heroic or villainous roles in the way that most of the characters in the series do.

    For me draco is like you see but more. I don't know (no one know) how he was really raised because that never show to us, so we can only expeculate how was his childhood. In my opinion is very clear he psicologically and emotionally abused and neglected by his father, who always was cold and extrict to him, expecting more than draco could do at a very young age; to be the best student, to be the best at quidditch, to had the best conections, to be the best at everything he does because he is suposed to be better than everyone who isn't a pure blood, best than others pure blood, that he has perfect. We don't know so much about lucius but he isn't a good person, he doesn't mind use violence and always talked to draco about "the good old times with voldy" , i know that a criminal not ever is bad with theyr familys but it doesn't seen like a good father to me. He never help draco if he doesn't has something to win, he never seen so interested in the life of draco like draco says (what to me see like overcompensation) . I think draco was raise just how the malfoy heir, not like a loved son. I know narcissa cares for him, but she is apsent until the sixt book, and i don't think she was the same cold as her husband but much diferent, just she show more love and afection to draco than his father.

    • @HillsAliveYT
      @HillsAliveYT  3 роки тому

      Yeah I think that's fair, a lot of what I said is just me extrapolating based on what we've seen or read but I honestly could be wrong, especially since as you said, Lucius and Narcissa are objectively bad people.

    I really liked Draco as a character, but could never really explain *why* besides “oh I found the fanfiction first so I guess it altered my views on him in the actual books.” And although that might be true, I realize by watching this just how much I relate to him, and I’m pretty sure I’d picked up on it subconsciously. I looked at him and said “This. This is me. These are mistakes I have and probably will make in the future. This is how morally gray *I* am. But you can change, you can be better, just for the sake of being better. This. This is me.” And I didn’t even realize I’d done that until now. We all have options, it’s just that the ones we may be offered are all terrible, and we have to choose between what is right, and what will bring us the least harm. Who can blame him for choosing to save himself and his family? Wouldn’t we have done the same? Thank you for this video, it was very eye opening.

    I haven't seen the video yet but I guess it's because we sympathize with him... Nowadays most of us are going through a tough period.. and we know how it feels and we know that none of us deserve to be treated like that... We all crave for love and we all deserve it...

    To me Draco’s a bitch no matter what 😅. I get all of y’all’s comments being like “Oh, well his mistakes just make his redemption better and more relatable and he learns from them.” He will always be a bad character for me. The only thing that he really didn’t have a choice for was becoming a death eater. He was forced into that by his family’s reputation. But this bitch walked around school like he was a boss because his dad had a high status. He slammed racial slurs on witches/wizards with muggle parentage. He tried his absolute best to make Hagrid feel bad and get him sacked. He tormented the golden trio for years. From “Weasley is our king” to “I’m in the Inquisitorial squad, so lemme just take 5 points from Harry for existing, take 10 from Hermione for being a ‘mudblood’, take some from Ernie for disagreeing with me, and turn all of the other houses points negative just for the fun of it. And then his father gets sent to Azkaban and he loses that confidence, and all the 12 year old girls are like “Ohhh, such a poor kid.” He is far from that.
    Dont forget all the sweets his family gave him during each term.

    I never liked Draco and never will. In fact, I’d put him up there with characters like Greyback. He’s not evil but he’s not a good person. He didn’t do anything to redeem himself. Oh, wow, he didn’t hand Harry over at Malfoy Manor. Well, he literally tried to hand Harry over at the end of the 7th book and depsite being saved by Harry, he pleads to Death Eaters telling them he’s on their side. True he realized everything with Voldemort was wrong but that’s all. He never actually did anything to show that
