  • If your tax-exempt organization normally has $50,000 or less in gross receipts (income before expenses are subtracted) each year, and its tax-exempt status was revoked for not filing a return for three years in a row, this video may help you.

Thank you for the video! Question, I have an org that was passed on to me. It was revoked once under a certain EIN. It was reinstated many years later using 1023-EZ and got a new EIN. It was automatically revoked again this year; can I do the 1023-EZ form? The 1023-EZ instructions on page 14, number 10 in the table is confusing me. Any help is appreciated!

Thank you for your video! Definitely has helped clarify things for me! I have a question. Just wondering what your opinion is. I paid a CPA to file three years worth of my 990 but I still got my revocation done in May of last year. I have all the copies of my returns but I’m not sure why I’ve been revoked. Could he have not mailed it in or was I supposed to send in the copies?

Kimly Kim normally when a CPA prepares a tax return, he/she provides instructions for filing. Those instructions should make it clear WHO is sending the return to the IRS. If the CPA is going to mail the return to the IRS, or e-file the return, they would send you a signature page, to be returned to the CPA for filing. If they didn't ask you to sign a form and send it back to them, then it was intended that YOU sign the return and mail it to the IRS yourself. In most cases where a return is being filed on paper, it is the client who signs and mails the return to the IRS. A quick phone call to your CPA should reveal what happened. If you were revoked May of 2018, you may be able to re-apply under the Streamlined Procedure of Rev Proc 2014-11. In that case you would not have to explain to the IRS why the returns were not filed.

Thank you very much for your help..
Question , is it the same form if it's a church ?

Hugo, a church cannot use Form 1023-EZ. It must use the full Form 1023 to apply for tax-exempt status. Both forms are now only available online at the pay.gov website. The IRS no longer accepts paper mail-in forms. They must be submitted electronically. A church does not have a Form 990 filing requirement so no church should be in a position where it would be revoked for non-filing, so should not have to re-apply for that reason.

Thank you so much for your quick response... We started the church in 2018 and I received a letter saying that my status is revoked because I didn't fill form 990. I don't know why..
