    In a broader sense, ‘fraternité’ and the central character represent the new Europe on the cusp of unification. The opening scene establishes a connection across the channel as the UK was poised to join the EU at the time. The unification of Europe was a major theme for the whole trilogy.

    No, ansolutely not! Red demonstrates the contingency of all things not understood to be connected. Randomness therefore becomes contingency in a rhyzomatic sense. Beyond that, of course, K's asking us what just might be connected in an unknown way that we've hitherto assumed not to be?
