Born in Nashville and my father was an original Texas Troubadour with Ernest Tubb. He was 56 when I was born, so he was outside of the business. In 1980, I mentioned I wanted to play bass guitar, so we jumped into the car, headed to Broadway to go to a pawn shop. He walked in and everyone knew him. He quit playing in 1962. At 15, this was the first time I saw my Dad as "famous". From that point on Nashville became different to me. Understand that 1980 was before the explosion of bars and tourists destinations and pro sports. Meaning, you could actually drive to downtown, park for FREE and wander around the Ryman, Tootsie's, Robert's Western World, a few other flavorful places and see Johnny Cash or George Jones just hanging out. YES, Nashville is a place that breathes music. Similar to New York and Broadway shows or fashion. Every day I feel blessed to have grown up in Nashville. In case you wondered why I chose the bass? Even in 1980 everyone was a singer/songwriter that played guitar or piano.... no one played bass. I got gigs all the time because I was a proficient bass player that could stay in the pocket.
