Paul gives advice in Romans 8-10 about "Following the spirit" It's too bad that many adapt the advice to just another form of legalism. My interpretation of "Following the spirit" is following the inclination of God given goodness which lays on your heart by the spirit. Focus on what it guides you to do and you will not be preoccupied by things sinful or unprofitable.This is not always easy to do, but it takes faith. "I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts"
I assume you mean all of us LOL. I don't think John, James, or Paul ever had some kind of "Sinless Perfection' in mind. I believe the life a Christian is one of continual repentance. I won't pretend to be a master of every evil i am guilty of but I think much has to do of how you approach it. The legalistic way of trying to tame the flesh my keeping lists or rule keeping will often result in more sinning (See Romas 7)
