To highlight something positive, I wanted to share an email that I got last year (2023) around this time from Essence/Catrice cosmetics. This is something that they did quietly, without splashing it all over social media: "Hi Jen, Hope you’re having a great week!! The essence Makeup and Catrice teams would love to share our gratitude and appreciation for all the support you’ve given us these past few months. Since the holidays are a time for giving back, we wanted to make a donation on behalf of YOU to a charity of your choice! 😊 Please let us know which charity you’d like us to donate in your name. Xx" Even though these are very affordable drugstore brands, they were willing to donate to charity instead of gifting us beauty creators for the holidays and I thought it was a beautiful gesture. I chose St. Jude children's hospital. ❤❤
This would be a great video idea, if you have enough content for it: brands that stepped up and did special things, meaningful things. (Like Nomad Cosmetics and their Starfish program)
@@shimmersandsilver Yes!! If you (or anyone else reading this) knows of any more, let me know! I'd love to do a video on that...kind of a positive counterbalance to this video. :)
Knowing all of these influencers are on a brands payroll (by taking expensive gifts) gives their opinion zero credibility. 100% puts me off a brand and will hurt the influencers in the long term when no one trusts them or values their content (or they have alienated their fans by flaunting private jets while people struggle to buy groceries).
Absolutely, influencers being showered with gifts (in my opinion) is akin to bribery and making sure the brand continues to get excellent reviews from the creators concerned and a bunch of sales curtesy of their many, many followers
Yeah, if someone pushes a brand and gets a trip, or a $30,000 bag, I'm done taking their "recommendations" seriously. It seems like credibility is a word that influencers just don't understand. But then again, neither does the general public these days. How many people would say "thanks, this is so nice, but I can't take it because my entire career is built around making beauty recommendations and I can't be seen to be bought..." Probably not many, so unfortunately these people who are in the spotlight are still getting a lot of props for being 'successful' rather than honest.
@@jtidema well said! I wonder if Makayla ever turns stuff down? I seriously doubt it. I used to follow her from the very beginning beginning but now all I see is a greedy fake person and it makes me sick.
I agree. These expensive trips are the reason why I don't buy Tarte products. People need to stop purchasing from companies like Tarte. If people continue to buy Tarte products after knowing what they are doing, then they are supporting and condoning their actions.
That trip was disgusting. I don’t know who these people are, but I don’t watch TikTok. And this whole thing is a good example of why. Maybe some people are impressed by these things, but I don’t know people like that (happy to say). I’m just an ordinary hard-working person who could never afford the things these influencers are gifted.
I wouldn´t even want this bracelet as a gift. This luxury stuff has often such a bad design or is just looking cheap. Or it´s just "special" because the brand name is stitched on it, but it´s made in the same factories in Bangladesh like the cheap stuff. 😅 And the voices and behaviours of these influencers are just annoying. Well, I´m clearly not the target audience...
I really appreciate that you don't do sponsorships. I'm disabled and money is tight, so I'm careful what I buy. I value your opinions on products more than paid influencers because I know you know it's hard for some folks to get by, and you don't want us wasting money, be we rich or poor. There's also an honesty factor at play. I know you aren't trying to curry favour with brands, so I trust your opinions more. Also, thank you for bringing up Avonna Sunshine's video and Patrick Ta's response. I had just heard about it this morning, but I hadn't seen the deleted video until now. I certainly won't be saving up for any of his expensive, moldy, racism-infused makeup now.
Thank you for the excellent content Jen. I've unsubscribed to so many influencers in the past two years due to the repetitive word salad they use regarding products. "Obsessed ", "can't live without", "my holy grail", etc and within a week or two, they are again "Obsessed " about another product(s). Best wishes for a Blessed and Joyous Holiday season to you and your family! 🌟
Be honest here for a sec, they are beauty influencers that love makeup, it's pretty much their passionate hobby and interest, what's so hard to believe they do like or love many products? Isn't it stranger if they don't? Many movie and book reviewers say they love many of the media they consume as well, idk why this standards apply so heavily on beauty influencers over the others when you think about it
All those expensive brand trips and gifts -- who's paying for it? We are. The consumers. I don't equate it to, say, a Super Bowl ad because it leads to biased reviews. I'm done with Tarte. Hey, Tarte, how about sending someone who lives on a pension and Social Security on a trip? No?? Didn't think so. On the bright side, your Vlogmas intro is a gift I open every day, so thank you!!! ❤🌲💛
Hi Susan! I agree, watching an ad hits differently than watching influencers flaunting their wealth and gifts that they get. It doesn't have the same "rubbing it in your face" kind of vibe, even if the commercial does cost more. And you're right, when we watch a commercial we know that it's an ad. But when it comes to influencers, it's very hard to tell if something is biased or not.
I agree. If people continue to buy Tarte products after knowing what they are doing, then they are supporting and condoning their actions. People need to stop purchasing from companies like Tarte. These expensive trips are the reason why I don't buy Tarte products.
I have grown so tired of all the nonsense, I have unsubscribed to most of the channels I was following. Jen, you are one of the few beauty channels I still watch. Thank you for all you do!
I wonder how much these brands pay their employees, and what kind of benefits they offer. It must be so demoralizing to work for them, witnessing this kind of lavish approach to marketing or, worse yet, having to make it happen. I hope they are really taken care of. (Not holding my breath)
This was a great idea for a video. I've "decluttered" influencers who act so surprised to get these gifts. The phony, "I've never even seen an Hermes box let alone get one", when they're making in a week what some make in a month, or year is nauseating.
You can buy a house in my area for $30,000. Giving away a bag that costs that much blows my mind. The fact that a bag can cost that much blows my mind. I'm sorry, but nobody "works hard" enough to "deserve" that kind of wealth. Some of the hardest workers I know are among the least wealthy in the U. S.
It probably means that she brough them sales for much more than that 30k bag. And just like Jen said, it will inspire other smaller influencers to push the brand in hopes of receiving the same kind of gifts
So true. I paid $71k for my house so I was thinking that it was half my house. It definitely costs more than what I paid for my car. At least my car serves a purpose.
I’m so glad you’re making this video. This is excellent content! Yes, these brands are totally out of touch. My husband has worked his life away to make sure we’re taken care of. I am so much more cautious about where and how and when to spend. For us, being able to truly take care of our parents so they can enjoy the rest of their life is what makes us feel rich. It brings us such joy. So yeah- buying them groceries or gas for their car over a $42 duo eyeshadow is what I’d prefer to do. That price tag and many more makeup products are just too expensive. Totally out of touch. Great video ❤
I personally see no problem with a duo being $42; no one was having a hissy fit when NARS was charging $36 for a duo several years back.. No one complains about the average eyeshadow single being $20+… If it’s a product I’m going to use to completion, it’s worth the price for me, which is why I very rarely spend more than $10 on a lipstick, as I typically just wear lip balm…
@xamyx725 True, I've paid $20+ for a Mac Dazzle shadow that I completely used up and now that I'm more into cream and liquid eyeshadows, I have absolutely spent the same amount on some Butter London sheer serum eye shadows but those extravagant (to me ) Purchases were with birthday money and with very careful consideration of if I would actually use all of it. I should also preface that I only buy single eyeshadows at this point, because there is no sense in me buying a pallet and only use like 3 shades out of it and I'm definitely more of a lip balm and mascara person so the few expensive eyeshadows mixed with my colorpop Super Shock shadows and kiko eyeshadow sticks round out a nice small curated collection for me and my needs.
Yikes I had no idea about the other Patrick Ta controversy of not paying Black creators. And the double apology video is never a good look…but this was just weird because it was almost the exact same words he just apparently decided he needed to shed some tears to really make people feel bad for him?? 🥴🥴🥴 it’s just tacky af. It definitely turns me off from the brand as a whole.
Honestly I don’t get how he stole. It actually just looks like a hysterical, jealous and bitter person. I don’t know her nor have any interest in watching her content. I wouldn’t buy anything she promotes because she’s not attractive.
Wow, this was interesting. This is what I talk about when I say that I rarely buy hi-end. There are so many other ways for companies to show appreciation. Sales, discounts, donations, charities, etc. At the end of the day, I wash my face & all the makeup that I applied goes down the drain. It just doesn't make sense to pay the high price. I appreciate you so, so much for being here !
Tarte does more sales more frequently than any other high end or prestige brand by a mile. They have at least 5 multi day sales every year w 30 to 40% off. Additionally multiple 24 or 48 hr sales reliably every year at the same dates w 40 or 50 % off. I never bought a single thing full price. And I just got a 40% off voucher because Tarte had ran out of stock of an item I ordered. You know what most other high end and luxury brands would do?.... Nothing. And I speak of my own experience. They definitely don't give you vouchers like that 😂you might get an apology after emailing them multiple times. I buy dozens of different brands in all price ranges including indie and Korean beauty from Korea and Tarte has by far one of best customer services out there. Probably the best consistently. I'm not an influencer so I just receive standard treatment. I'm an international customer so they also make less money having to pay the rather expensive shipping to the UK for me. Still always get help right away. Have received multiple refunds because the darn courier lost shipments. Never a single issue in 5 years of ordering from their website.
I have no idea who the hell any of these “influencers” are these days and I’m not mad about it. I don’t have TikTok and I hope to god that shit gets shut down like they say it’s going to. It’s a toxic f*cking cesspool of people who literally all sound and look the goddamn same.
As a black woman who just invested in three Patrick Ta products, I am returning them, and never again, because I know actions like that too well, they are mostly deliberate, somebody somewhere in his company is responsible! If tarte were to offer free gift with purchase to their customers, I believe they would be supporting a lot more of their so called “community”! I am happy that influencing has created streams of income for a lot of people especially women but I feel these companies need to find ways to include and reward their everyday customers, who actually spend their hard earned money buying their products. We all like free stuff once in a while 😂
They probably have some sick twisted inside joke about the “apology hoodie” and they probably all laugh about it as soon as the camera stops running. Those apology “skits” are as fake as their lips, chest, and butts 😂
I think it's part of the apology video format. Grey hoodie, no make-up or streaky make-up to look like tears have been shed, the hair is a little messy or unkempt and the vibe is very somber.
It’s a pr strategy. The fact that he got more emotional on the 2nd take (that there IS a 2nd take), is also because there is a PR strategist behind him. It’s so 🙄🙄🙄🙄
I feel like Patrick Ta perceives himself and his brand as “luxury” makeup, but his products have not at all demonstrated luxury quality or branding. Not to mention him/his team’s handling of actual valid concerns screams condescending and pretentious, which is the type of so called “luxury” branding that is very out of touch with the average makeup consumer. Most luxury brands, although I never purchase luxury, it takes years and years to obtain that title and branding. It’s earned by many of these brands and Patrick Ta hasn’t earned or proven his brand is luxury at all to me.
Agreed!!! And I just think it’s wild they haven’t ever addressed the mold issues (as far as I know) and didn’t even address the issue of the eyeshadow duo pans falling out (Lipstick Lesbians addressed it, trying to explain it away like it was expected because of the formula). Like, the prices he charges, these are just NOT things that should be an issue! And if you can’t even address them, then you shouldn’t be charging the prices you charge!
He's trying to sell us the idea of buying precious stuff like pearls when in fact the ingredients are the same as in makeup you can buy in drugstores way much cheaper.
I am really glad I watch your channel. Not only do you do reviews I actually care for and like, but you also mention the issues happening to POC creators. I am glad you are bringing the stories to light for your audience and speaking up about it. Thank you so much for all your hard work and your down-to-earth reviews and vibes!! Also, your hair looks awesome today. 😊
Great topic Jen . I never used to care about social media. But I’ll boycotting every brand that gives lavish gifts, Birkens, and etc . Put this money to good use . Women in communities that need help gettting jobs, housing , childcare , and food ? Why not them ? Why the mickaylas of the world? No thank you . Genuine , or not, they’re not getting my coin . No thx , time for the indie brands to capture our attention .
Exactly! Have the influencer go to a woman's shelter and represent the brand giving the all the women in the shelter the entire line of makeup plus a $1000 VISA gift card or something like that.
It sounds like tarte is a MLM with how they treat influencers! I usually don't watch longer commentary videos, as i prefer to listen to them in the car. However, i watched today's video in its entirety and WoW ! Jen you crafted a 40 minute beauty specific video into an engaging masterpiece!!! A perfect blend of chatter, clips, positives, and negatives; beautifully crafted! I love when Jen delivers beauty space commentary and gets the conversation going. This is an example of how to eloquently and professionally 😊spill beauty guru tea.
They don't work like an MLM at all 😂?? No one needs to invest money in them to (re) sell their stuff. No one is recruiting underlings to do the same either
@@My_Girl_Milley that isn’t quite fair. Tarte actually supports a lot of women’s charities and nonprofits. On their site, you can pick a nonprofit that they will make a donation to with each purchase, no cost to you. What I don’t understand is Tarte’s marketing. Why do they do these extravagant influencers trips? They positioned themselves as an ethical, cruelty free, socially conscious brand - which is why I was attracted to the brand many, many years ago, plus they were inclusive in the medium and tan ranges. Whoever is in charge of marketing needs to be fired before Tarte loses the loyal customers. For many years Tarte was almost 100% of my makeup. After 15+ years, I realized I just made one purchase in 2023, and in 2024, and am done.
Honestly, as someone who works a normal job and has to pinch pennies, I try to stay away from specific influencer content. I work in veterinary emergency medicine. Its hard, emotional, physical work and I'm trying so hard to not burn out. I watch beauty videos to turn my brain off for a while and think about something that I enjoy. I don't need any reminders of how "average" I am lol. In general, I watch Jen, JuicyJas, Kelly Strack, and Andrea Matilano. I find they focus a lot on drug store brands and quality over quantity, which i appreciate. Thank you for all the great videos Jen!
I really love your channel because of videos like this. I knew about some of the drama but not all. Thank you for the research that went into making this video. I truly appreciate you.
I wish this was also the end of “influencers” .. I wish we could go back to the world before this garbage! I hope the trend of influencers ends soon!!!
I hope they don't go away (obviously because I'm one of them, haha!) but I wish that they could go back to being more relatable and not trying to be celebrities. I enjoyed watching influencers more when they talked about makeup because they loved it and not because they want to get rich being an "influencer".
@JenPhelps see, I don't consider you an influencer. I consider you an content creator because you are not trying to influence us to buy anything. I just see a difference between the two types of videos made 😊
@@JenPhelpsI don't consider you (or No BS Beauty) to be influencers. I consider you to be reviewers....you both tell it like it is. To me an influencer is someone whose only goal is to make you buy a product. I've stopped watching quite a few channels because they kept raving about products that were obviously terrible. It's important for consumers to know what goes on in the industry....thank you for a great video!
I wanted to share that I grew up in a family with DV. It was from everyone: my dad, my grandma, my brother, etc. They were all... and when I tried to report it, they were each others alibi. They tell everyone that it's me I'm the problem. That I'm a liar, impossible to get along with, that it's my fault. Meanwhile, every one of them are divorced. Every single relationship they have failed. My mom's been married 4 times. Whereas, more than 20 years later, my husband and I are still together. DV is still in my family, but it's not in my home. I didn't continue in my family's tradition.
Good for you! We all have the power of choice to break the toxic cycle of our generations by God's Grace. I'm a survivor of narcissistic abuse, and it took 11 years to work my way out of it. It is possible, and there is hope. It would've gone a lot faster for me if I had understood the power of going no contact. There are so many resources available... counselors, Books, Church programs, Domestic abuse specialists. To someone who suffering, please reach out and find help. You're not alone. I think it's hard for the people to trust and believe that strangers could care more about you then your own family.
And this is why i value your channel THE MOST! Those influencers seem so materialistic and fake . Could not stand to watch any of them. You on the other hand have substance. Thank you for being here!
I suspect I sounded a little like this in college, but only in private! (There were no videos on my 1999 Geocities site, but I certainly wouldn't have posted myself cursing a lot... 👵) It's just really tacky, you know?
IIRC there was backlash to Tirtir for gifting Mikayla the Birken bag cuz they gave Darcie a much cheaper bag (On I think the same trip) even though Darcie had been the one to call them out on their poor shade range which they then expanded on and invited her on a trip. Then they gave her the more expensive bag in response to the backlash
I love these videos that expose shady business practices. We all need to stay informed to protect our dollars. I will never ever buy another Tarte product again. Everyone needs to do the same. But the sad thing is, all this publicity, whether it’s bad or good, will unfortunately increase sales for the company. Many people just don’t pay attention to the negativity, and they’ll just think Tarte is popular because it’s in the news. So, it brings attention to the brand, that someone may have never heard of them. We need to use our spending power to stop these companies from doing shady crap.
Wait but why was that girl breaking the Patrick Ta products? I was just listening to the video so I might've missed something but isn't that just wasting her own money and like thats just as weird 😭
I almost fell asleep during the PT “apology”. Was he almost fake crying during the second one??!! Parker Posie and BL were gross during that interview.
OMG...not another fake apology video. Not one but two!! The situation might have been better resolved if he had handled it privately. Just my two cents.
There are certain brands and stores I won't purchase from for various reasons. I have a certain amount of "fun money" to spend. I don't want to reward bad behavior or support hate with that money. I understand that if you dig deep enough, every brand has some sort of problem. But those that continually fail to grow or evolve from controversy won't be getting my money. The response, or lack thereof, to the problem can absolutely make things worse. There are enough brands and stores out there that we can be selective.
I'd rather watch a Superbowl ad than see some "influencer" go on a mega vacation. Thank you for mentioning that you've lived paycheck to paycheck, we appreciate you ❤
I don’t need an influencer’s opinion on a product to make a decision on what to purchase or what’s in or not. I don’t watch Tik Tok ( I’m too old for that childish content ). Great video Jen ! ❤
I don’t mind what tarte does for influencers but all the free products given out to influencers and these trips…no wonder why the cost of makeup increases. They are also trying to influence the influencers. I haven’t bought tarte in forever because I’m not impressed with their products.
The funny thing is that someone, somewhere said this bag is worth this much. I find it interesting how people have been duped into believing this. Gucci....Valentino... Chanel....it's only worth more because people believe them telling you it's worth more. People are out here robbing and stealing crap just because it has a certain name on it.
Yes, I just noticed a comment about how these bags are "made from dead animal skin", and had to correct them. It's bad enough that they are charging thousands of dollars (sorry, no. No bag is worth that much money. It's impossible that it could cost so much to produce that the company has to charge those prices) for a purse made of leather, but many of these bags are not even leather. They are synthetic. If you have so much money and so few brains that $30K seems like a reasonable price to you, then knock yourself out.....but there's no way to justify that kind of price.
@@JenPhelps Louis Vuitton is no longer luxury. I’m in Paris right now and here it is considered a joke. In the US it is the mascot for the insecure people who don’t know how to dress and need a label on the outside. Don’t be fooled by the ‘faux’ luxury brands.
If a brand gives a creator a gift, especially a big gift, why does the creator have to show that? The creator is essentially rubbing it in the follower’s faces.
Exactly. They CHOOSE to make a video about it, to brag to the public. I hate when they act all surprised about what they received. Those companies don’t just send influencers surprises like they claim in the videos. 🙄 There is an agreement, the merchandise is discussed, and it is written up in a contract.
I CANNOT get through the TikTok "influencers" shown. I watched the first 2 and then just jumped ahead. Granted, I am not their target audience, but who can respect the opinion of anyone with such a limited vocabulary and disfunctional use of the English language.
Seriously, this airheads are influencers??? As John says in Terminator 2: "We're not gonna make it, are we?" It's no wonder so many young people are gormless oiks if those are the people that influence them.
I think you did a good job expressing how these brands look from where we're sitting. And yet it seems like they just don't care. Luckily none of them are brands I currently buy from or have on my wishlist.
Hi Jenn, i love your video. For me i dont trust influencers, never have never will. I like & listen to you a nd a few other you-tubers. You explain why you like or not like a product , how it feels & how it sits on your skin. You are not trying to sell me something that i know would not work for me. In the past i have purchased products that you have talked about & have been extremely happy with them based on your explanation of them. I have not purchased everything you talk about because i know they would not work for me but i watch you & think they are very nice products but just not right for me. You have helped me more than you know.
This is why you are my favourite influencer. You don’t do sponsorships so I trust you when you say a product is good or bad. Plus you are so relatable. It’s like hanging out with a friend.
Jen I love that you have been doing more of this type of content lately- you've been doing more beauty community and trend and brand analysis videos and things like that. Loving it!
You knocked this video out of the park!!! Homerun Jen!!!! You summarized what many of us have been thinking. I hope brands see your video and have serious reflection!!! You always create such thoughtful and insightful content!
I regret buying the mini of the TirTir cushion foundation after the Mikala thing but also because it had so little product. Barely lasted a month, what's the point of that??? Never again.
@@barbthegreat586 it wasn't the red one it was the silver. It's a very low coverage skin tint which I have realized I don't like , I was trying to build it up a little.
You are right on. Mist brands are so out of touch with the costumers. The influencer days are numbered. There was a time when we were able to puck out our own makeup and were very happy and looked spectacular
I know this, i used to buy loads of Tarte products but honestly that Bora Bora debacle left a sour taste in my mouth. Even if one of their products catches my attention, THAT is all I remember. I feel sure I'm not the only one who feels that way. Edit to say: NOT PT TURNING ON THE TEARS IN THE SECOND VIDEO! 😂😂😂
I used to buy Tarte a few years ago and then quit - so glad I quit since they insist on wasting money. I liked Tarte when it was first started by Maureen.
Great food for thought, Jen!💟 You have some of the best videos!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Just my thoughts... if you have a great product, you shouldn't have to "bribe" or "pay" people to not say negative things about said product(s). Quality speaks for itself... and if something is truly good, consumers & their wallets don't mind purchasing.. Unfortunately we live in a world of bs.. money makes folks forget about honesty, integrity & loyalty. YOURE ALWAYS AUTHENTIC sweet Jen!🥰❤️💄💋👑🙏🏻
I agree! Great video. Really got me thinking about the products I purchase. I don't recognize many of those influencers who are going on these brand trips. There are only a handful of beauty influencers that I watch these days. I've decided to not buy from some of these brands that have been called out for overindulging influencers, because unless it is an influencer I've followed for years, anyone who is promoting Tarte for example I simply can't trust they are being honest. I've actually decluttered a lot of my Tarte products. I find Tarte a little hit or miss, many just didn't work out for me. You are so right Shannonwhite7605, if a product is made well and really exceptional people will buy it.
Yeah, I’m definitely paying more attention to brands and how they spend their dollars and who they’re working with. No more tarte. TirTir sending Makayla a birkin- no thank you. Will never buy from them again
@@JenPhelpsthat’s what I initially thought but I think I was mistaking it with tirtir. I’ll have to look into it more. I edited my comment just in case
This video was a real eye-opener! Brands could lower their prices instead of all these trips and gifts! This is why I only buy high end when there is a sale and why I appreciate you letting us know when there is a sale😊
Blake’s body language during the 2nd interview was so unprofessional and disrespectful. I’ve always liked her so this was disappointing. Very “let them eat cake” attitude.
Why does she have to become a spokeswomen fir it? All she did was make a movie. I have seen so many movies or TV shoes that have dealt with domestic abuse and no one ever got mad at them for not becoming a spokesperson...
She’s an actress and it’s a fictional movie and she has no responsibility to counsel strangers walking up to her in public. The interviewer’s question asking her how she would respond to people was ludicrous. She’s not a counselor and a celebrity sighting is not the time or place. She has a right to her privacy. His question was literally how she’d respond to strangers coming up to her in public. He didn’t ask her “what kind of message do you think this movie will send?” She was responding to the assumption that she should stop and talk to fanatical fans.
You have done an extraordinary video here Jen!! 👏👏👏 I don’t have the time to keep updated on all this and you just enlighten me to some really shady brands and what they are doing. Kudus to you for being that honest, genuine and sincere voice we trust. ❤
I, personally have stopped listening to MOST product recommedations from influencers because of this kind of tone deaf stuff. It is like a slap in the face to people struggling to just get by. The whole influencer sleigh ride is slowly fizzing out. People like you and a very few others will always be on my radar because of your honesty Happy New Year!
Thank you for sharing this information. Yes I have seen some influencers flaunt their lifestyle and I must admit it really is a turn off. I think that a lot of the younger women don’t really care how they are perceived by their followers. Thank you for being so gracious with your content. It is appreciated.
Another FABULOUS video Jen!!❤ Your channel is one of my favorites & I never miss a post. Your content is not just GRWMs or HAULS but rather intellectual & thought-provoking discussions surrounding the beauty industry. THANKYOU for all the hard work you put into your channel. Love & prayers for you and yours!🎄 🎁
It's basically blackmail from these brands , they are not going to say anything negative about the products as they won't get all these gifts and trips . That's why I love your channel so much , you don't do sponsorship and your reviews are so honest your the only person I trust xx
A little class wouldn’t hurt a lot of these influencers…companies can’t give that to them, unfortunately…a few lessons in the English language wouldn’t hurt either…definitely less interested in some of these brands now…thanks, Jen, for this dose of reality!
Thanks for the video, Jen! Wow, lots of cringe-y stuff this year. The Tarte, Patrick Ta, and Tir Tir incidents definitely smell like "Let them eat cake." (To be fair, historians say Marie Antoinette didn't say this. But you get my point.)
Hi Jen, love that eyeshadow color on you. I don’t watch TikTok or Mikayla, I don’t understand why she has a huge following, her voice makes me cringe like someone raking their nails on a chalkboard.😂 This was an eye opener video, loved the content, your the best at being so creative with the videos you make. Yup, I’ve unsubscribed from quite a few folks on utube, they started off being so good but once their channel grew they completely changed and just keep trying to push products on us cause they now love everything or are obsessed. They hardly ever said anything bad on products they show and we knew better. Thank goodness we were blessed with you.❤
I don't normally like videos like this, but Christmas time tends to make me cynical because of the over consumerism, and this was eye-opening. Plus your hair looks absolutely amazing.😂
This was so interesting! I’ve never heard of most of those influencers, but I only spend my money when the ones I trust provide an authentic review, and your channel is one of them. ❤
As someone who is living paycheck to paycheck, I've stopped watching influencers who I feel are just trying to sell something or make money off of me vs. actually giving me advice, reviews, and great swatches. Your channel is my favorite because I trust you. I have a couple others I still like to watch because I feel the same way (State of Kait is one) but for the most part I have avoided many of the creators for this reason and I especially avoid the Tik Tok live sales because they are just a cash grab. I honestly have to wonder how many people are struggling and regret their purchases from things like that. Even I regret certain purchases, so I'm trying to be more careful because that's not money I can ever get back, and I don't get anything for free. Thank you, Jen, for your authenticity and honesty.
I agree, these were not good lucks for the companies. But also not good looks for us consumers. If people keep following these sold out influencers, then we are the chumps, imho. And Jen's point about it not being a bad business choice for the brands is spot on. We are constantly being sold to.. some are obvious, like these. Thank you for sharing this video!
Tbh, I didn’t like the tir tir. And I find myself eye roll to hear influencers I trust say how great it is. As for tarte, I haven’t purchased from the brand for at least 3 years. One thing that really disgusted me were influencers promoting their collaborations or brands. And this extends to dermatology. Than you beautiful Jen. You are a class act ❤️❤️❤️
I didn't like the TirTir either, it was too full coverage for me and made my skin look dry. The silver one is nice but it doesn't come in very many shades.
@ I used to love UA-cam & now, creators like you who remain authentic, are rare gems. With many releases, we get bombarded with how great it is. Only to find, it’s because of compensation and generous payout on affiliate links
thank you so much!!! This is one of the most honest and insightful videos in a long time.. i really appreciate how you just tell it like it is, keeping it all so honest.. i look forward to your videos all the time and learn so so much from you.. Happy Holidays, joanne from Boston
Agreed. But it won’t ‘break’ unless you contribute. Don’t wait for someone else, cancel TikTok, Instagram etc… You can do it!!! They are destroying our children and our society. Be part of the good in the world!!
Thank you for your continued commitment to honesty/ transparency and for being mindful of viewers who enjoy good beauty products but can't afford high priced, high end items. I've stopped watching beauty influencers that I followed for years after they began to embrace mostly higher end products that were unrealistic for me. Whether influencers admit to a sponsored video or not, you notice they're no longer commenting for the consumer but regularly endorsing the brands being discussed. It's a gift to know this will never happen with you. Thank you also for the high quality content of your videos. Happy Holidays to you and your family!
I'm a new subscriber. I love this video and the perspective it gives to the viewers ❤. I like makeup but I limit myself. Influencers testing on products can be fun to watch, bc we get to see the swatches but they are becoming more alienated compared to the huge consumer base. I thank UA-camrs like you for making me a more informed consumer. I hope you will be successful in your future endeavors ❤❤❤
Jen THIS is one of many reasons your fans adore you. I started to realize this year how often I just quickly purchase items I may not need because a UA-cam influencer says they love it. And oftentimes, I have been disappointed in the product. I’m a regular person who has had to work for everything I have and this just doesn’t resonate with my values nor bank account. This video of yours really illustrates why influencers are all talking about the same brand and item around the same time, because they’ve all been sent these ginormous gift boxes ( or exclusive trips, or expensive bags or jewelry)of the product it’s and it’s rare for them to have anything negative or honest criticism about them. It’s caused me to cut down and wait before purchasing. Thank you Jen for being a person of honor and integrity.✝️🛐🙏🏼💕💕💕🎄🎄🎄ps loving your vlogmas videos , your son has grown so much! 💕
To highlight something positive, I wanted to share an email that I got last year (2023) around this time from Essence/Catrice cosmetics. This is something that they did quietly, without splashing it all over social media:
"Hi Jen,
Hope you’re having a great week!! The essence Makeup and Catrice teams would love to share our gratitude and appreciation for all the support you’ve given us these past few months. Since the holidays are a time for giving back, we wanted to make a donation on behalf of YOU to a charity of your choice! 😊
Please let us know which charity you’d like us to donate in your name. Xx"
Even though these are very affordable drugstore brands, they were willing to donate to charity instead of gifting us beauty creators for the holidays and I thought it was a beautiful gesture. I chose St. Jude children's hospital. ❤❤
@@JenPhelps wow! Those companies are amazing! Make me cry for that action and it’s a better and excellent idea!
Thats awsome! Huge applauses for Essence/Catrice and at the same time they are recognizing the great job you do too!!👏🏻👏🏻
Brava!

Oh, come on. Those voices are just so caYUUUTE!
Those influencer’s voices are more irritating than the products they’re pushing.
Their reactions definitely bring up my puke factor.
I’m so glad I don’t have TicTok. Watching those videos is absolutely disgusting and it actually makes me not want to buy anything from tart anymore
Yep!
Like what the f this and what the f that. So annoying.
Thank you! Their voices and unnecessary swearing are intolerable. 😂
Based on this video, I will never spend money on any of the tone-deaf makeup brands shown.
Saying, “This was so-and-so’s fault but I take full responsibility…” is definitely not how one takes full responsibility. 😂
Yes I think that people who don't watch TikTok may not even realize that these things are going on!
@@JenPhelps I don't have TikTok. I saw a whole thing about it on 60 minutes and I was like no way will I download that app.

I don't watch it either...... But unfortunately I think it's children and very young adults who watch it
Okay, am I the only one that thinks those bracelets are ugly? Also, Patrick Ta screams pretentious 😱
Mr Ta is trying very hard to exude the rich and famous aura. He needs those dollars 😂
It's giving cheap.
If I had that kind of money to spend, that bracelet is the last thing I would buy.
Yep. Patrick got greedy and too big for his boots
I wouldn´t even want this bracelet as a gift. This luxury stuff has often such a bad design or is just looking cheap. Or it´s just "special" because the brand name is stitched on it, but it´s made in the same factories in Bangladesh like the cheap stuff. 😅
And the voices and behaviours of these influencers are just annoying.
I agrees, I'm in the same position... the influences that Jen mentioned sound like valley girls. Good Luck to you!!❤❤
@bobbyeglenn8392 Thank you, and good luck to you!
I agree. If people continue to buy Tarte products after knowing what they are doing, then they are supporting and condoning their actions.
I wish creators did more videos on looks using what they have.
@@JenPhelps VERY well-said. This is why I trust you. ❤💛💚
Yes! No one cares how brands spend money to advertise. It’s that they expect us to watch the flaunt.

I agree. These trips are gross, and why I am not a Tarte customer anymore.
I love how influencers act so surprised “wait what??” 452 times in a video. Scummy behavior
"You guys. This is my HONEST review". 😂
This was a great idea for a video. I've "decluttered" influencers who act so surprised to get these gifts. The phony, "I've never even seen an Hermes box let alone get one", when they're making in a week what some make in a month, or year is nauseating.
Exactly!
@@DarkFire1536 ‘Decluttered’. Perfect.
Most of us have never even seen a Hermes box
You can buy a house in my area for $30,000. Giving away a bag that costs that much blows my mind. The fact that a bag can cost that much blows my mind. I'm sorry, but nobody "works hard" enough to "deserve" that kind of wealth. Some of the hardest workers I know are among the least wealthy in the U. S.
Ain't that the truth.
💯
It probably means that she brough them sales for much more than that 30k bag. And just like Jen said, it will inspire other smaller influencers to push the brand in hopes of receiving the same kind of gifts
So true. I paid $71k for my house so I was thinking that it was half my house. It definitely costs more than what I paid for my car. At least my car serves a purpose.
Where do you live?! 😭
Agreed! It's so nice to be able to do things for others and help out family members!
It definitely turns me off from the brand as a whole.
and the fact his 2nd post apology looks like AI like 😭😭😭
Honestly I don’t get how he stole. It actually just looks like a hysterical, jealous and bitter person. I don’t know her nor have any interest in watching her content. I wouldn’t buy anything she promotes because she’s not attractive.
No more Patrick Ta for me
Wow, this was interesting.
Well said!
👏👏
I haven't bought anything from Tarte in years and I won't after what I just watched.
I have no idea who the hell any of these “influencers” are these days and I’m not mad about it. I don’t have TikTok and I hope to god that shit gets shut down like they say it’s going to. It’s a toxic f*cking cesspool of people who literally all sound and look the goddamn same.
I heard they have until sometime in mid January unless someone else buys the company!
Fingers crossed it gets banned @JenPhelps
Couldn't agree more. 💯
💯 agree!
@@JenPhelpswhy are they talking about shutting it down? Seems like it’s a very popular cash cow.
We all like free stuff once in a while 😂
Oh who cares 😂
I wonder what is the reason why so many ppl who post apology vids do it with a grey hoodie and a makeup-less face.
Good question! I saw the gray hoodie and thought it was on purpose. Maybe not but it's like a cliche at this point!
It’s so 🙄🙄🙄🙄
Gotta try and look all apologetic and repentant at least lol!
@@EXOmakemeHorololoI think she was talking about one aspect of it, not the whole thing.

That's right! I think they gave her a Chanel first.

Absolutely! They're made out of leather, but so are bags that cost $100. Some Louis Vuitton bags aren't even leather and they're thousands of dollars.

Louis Vuitton is no longer luxury. I’m in Paris right now and here it is considered a joke. In the US it is the mascot for the insecure people who don’t know how to dress and need a label on the outside. Don’t be fooled by the ‘faux’ luxury brands.
One of the best videos I’ve seen on this subject, where brands seemingly turn tone deaf to their customers, great work Jen!
If a brand gives a creator a gift, especially a big gift, why does the creator have to show that? The creator is essentially rubbing it in the follower’s faces.
Exactly! I think that's why it's less acceptable than traditional advertising for most people, even if it costs the brand less.
I agree, and it’s that so OTT valley girl reaction that’s also such a turn off.
Exactly. They CHOOSE to make a video about it, to brag to the public. I hate when they act all surprised about what they received. Those companies don’t just send influencers surprises like they claim in the videos. 🙄 There is an agreement, the merchandise is discussed, and it is written up in a contract.
Bragging or showing appreciation. Hard to tell from the other side of the screen.
@@EnvyBlu That is interesting! I didn't know that. So, the surprise gift isn't a surprise at all! Hmm 🤔
You don't skip a beat jenn, holy moly you be delivering forreal, forreal ❤
WOW, just WOW! Thank you for covering these issues in the sensitive way you do.
I CANNOT get through the TikTok "influencers" shown. I watched the first 2 and then just jumped ahead. Granted, I am not their target audience, but who can respect the opinion of anyone with such a limited vocabulary and disfunctional use of the English language.
Lol you said it perfectly!
I shudder to think of their influence over the ones looking up to these poor role models for young women.
Seriously, this airheads are influencers??? As John says in Terminator 2: "We're not gonna make it, are we?"
It's no wonder so many young people are gormless oiks if those are the people that influence them.
Me too! I just cringed watching these fake people so I sped up the video back to Jen😁
I think you did a good job expressing how these brands look from where we're sitting. And yet it seems like they just don't care. Luckily none of them are brands I currently buy from or have on my wishlist.
New sub here. Appreciate your style, and that you don't say "literally" or "obsessed". LOL
I ❤ content that draws back the curtain on things consumers of makeup should take into consideration when purchasing.
Plus, Jen does not take sponsorships, that makes her opinions more objective to me.
“This is my finance team’s mistake”… never again Patrick Ta. Don’t publicly blame your people then try to look like a martyr.
You're using too much product, that's why you run out of it quickly.
@@barbthegreat586 it wasn't the red one it was the silver. It's a very low coverage skin tint which I have realized I don't like , I was trying to build it up a little.
@@barbthegreat586A mini is more for try it out or travel so it’s not going to last long regardless.
Your hair looks great, Jen! ☺️
Patrick Ta's "apology " vid was lacking in affect, as if robotic. Fell flat for most people.
Great food for thought, Jen!💟 You have some of the best videos!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Just my thoughts... if you have a great product, you shouldn't have to "bribe" or "pay" people to not say negative things about said product(s).
Basma did too?? Wow. I believe TirTir also sent her a Cartier bracelet!
@@JenPhelpsthat’s what I initially thought but I think I was mistaking it with tirtir. I’ll have to look into it more. I edited my comment just in case
@@JenPhelpsok so basma sent her a Cartier bracelet. I knew it was lavish.
Ohh okay I remember now! 🥰
This video was a real eye-opener! Brands could lower their prices instead of all these trips and gifts! This is why I only buy high end when there is a sale and why I appreciate you letting us know when there is a sale😊
It doesn't seem like Blake understands what a serious topic domestic violence is.
Frankly she seemed like she was under the influence of something especially the last clip.
Have you ever seen her on the red carpet? She looks like the kind of woman that WE ALL KNOW, that you never turn your back on.
People like you and a very few others will always be on my radar because of your honesty
Happy New Year!
Your videos are so well researched. Thank you for your hard work!
It's basically blackmail from these brands , they are not going to say anything negative about the products as they won't get all these gifts and trips . That's why I love your channel so much , you don't do sponsorship and your reviews are so honest your the only person I trust xx
This was a very unique concept for a year end video. Well thought out and brilliantly executed. Fantastically done, Jen!
Thank you so much! ❤️
A little class wouldn’t hurt a lot of these influencers…companies can’t give that to them, unfortunately…a few lessons in the English language wouldn’t hurt either…definitely less interested in some of these brands now…thanks, Jen, for this dose of reality!
Anyone using Mikayla to shill their products can hop into trash with her. Especially TirTir with their Hermes bag gifting.
I do not buy tart products now I really won’t consider that brand going forward for any reason.
Thank goodness we were blessed with you.❤
This was an excellent summary of the year’s controversies - thanks Jen!
I don't normally like videos like this, but Christmas time tends to make me cynical because of the over consumerism, and this was eye-opening. Plus your hair looks absolutely amazing.😂
Love your videos. This was great!
You are one of the few truly trustworthy beauty review channels. I appreciate you.
This is an excellent video. Thanks for being so real, Jen.
Could you tell what you didn’t like about tir tir. never bothered even looking at it as it is not vegan and cruelty free
thank you so much!!! This is one of the most honest and insightful videos in a long time.. i really appreciate how you just tell it like it is, keeping it all so honest.. i look forward to your videos all the time and learn so so much from you.. Happy Holidays, joanne from Boston
Happy Holidays to you as well! 🥰 I'm so glad you enjoy my videos!
If only social media would “break” for a while. The whole scene is revolting.
Tarte is out of touch. Never Tarte!
Absolutely, I won't but their products anymore.
Instead of paying for those trips or bags they should lower the prices on their products, what better way to make people want to buy your product.
What an interesting and thorough video! 😘
Hi Jen! Thanks for this video content. I just recently discovered your channel. You are amazing!
Aw thank you so much!! 🥰
Welcome to the family! Jen only speaks common sense!
