Thank you for watching this video! Some of our viewers asked about the map at 0:45 - it's a map of Ukrainian People's Republic, Ukrainian state of the period described in the video. The map also appears later in the video at 4:10 - when we talk in more detail about Bolsheviks subjecting Ukrainian terretory. If you enjoyed this video - subscribe for more content about Ukraine.
This was very informative, thank you! I had learned more about the song Shchedryk during past year but I didn’t understand the political aspect, the wonderful Ukrainian cultural tour of 1918 approx, very smart idea and helped world know uniqueness of Ukraine vs lumping in w Russia. It’s like we’ve gone through this process again in past years. Shows that Ukraine has been trying to assert independence for long time. Home Alone first time many Ukrainians heard the tune? Amazing. Btw would be great to hear from descendants of that cultural tour that couldn’t go home.
The fact that the composer was assassinated a year before the Holodomor is haunting. The power of people singing a song in the Ukrainian language was a direct threat to the horror the moscovites were planning.
Actually it happened in 1921 and the Holodomor (the Stalin-made famine that is referred to as such) started in 1932. There was another famine in 1921-23 though. This one had natural reasons, and although the regime still made it worse, it wasn'tas deadly as that of 1932-1933 which was artificial and genocidal.
@@lani6647 I understand that Stalin was born in Georgia (or the Tiflis Governorate as it was known in the russian Empire), the Soviet empire was led from moscow with the same people who had been serving the Tzars. It was moscow that inherited the principles and values of Genghis Khan and the golden hoard not Georgia. This is evidenced by the fact that Georgia is trying to escape from russia today and have condemned the war.
I find it interesting that the proposed 1916 Ukrainian state map includes Rostov and vast swaths of land east of Donbas. It underlines just how weak the Russian claim to the entire region south of Moscow actually is.
I've always loved Carol of the Bells. I recently found out it was composed by a Ukrainian when I was looking up Ukrianian Christmas music. 🎄 Ukraine has given the world and continues to give the world so much. Ukraine existed for thousands of years before Soviet Union and Russia and was forced to join the USSR when Lenin and his army invaded. Ukraine has faced so much at the hands of Soviets and Russians, she finally found freedom but again Putin tries to claim a country that was never Russian to begin with. Ukraine has in recent decades built up her cities, instilled a strong sense of pride and democracy in her citizens, something that Putin is threatened by. He doesn't want Russians to think democracy can work, he wants to continue pushing the idea Fascism and the way his leads Russia is how things should be. Ukraine is proof he is wrong and that's why he wants to destroy her and take Ukrainians' freedom.
Thank you for this! Shchdryck has been one of my favorite pieces of music, even long before I knew any of the history behind it. It is so much more meaningful having learned more about it over the last two years. 💛💙
Thank you for this explainer. I knew some small parts of this story. I learned these bits and pieces only last year . Your presentation fits these pieces together and fills in some voids for me. I had heard that "Carol of the Bells" had come from an ancient Ukrainian folk song. So I knew the origins were not about Christmas, but I didn't know about Shchedryk. I didn't know that Ukrainians fought for freedom from russia by singing this song. I didn't know that Mykola Leontovych was assassinated for the beautiful music he had created. I wonder if the choir director at my church knows this story. I wonder if my sister who plays piano, organ and hand bells at her church knows this story. If they don't, they soon will. Thanks for educating me. I'll spread the word. Slava Ukraini!
It has taken the brutal invasion by the russian terrorist state to wake up the world to the cultural heritage and impact of Ukraine and its amazing people on the world. A beautiful piece of music. An even more beautiful people. Slava Ukraini 🇺🇦🇬🇧💛💙
Curious, why did you show your country on the maps without including your occupied lands, Crimea and the Donesk regions? They most certainly are part of Modern Ukraine. Slava Ukraine.
Thank you for watching. The map shows the terretory of the Ukrainian People's Republic, Ukrainian state at the time period that we describe in the video, not the modern Ukraine.
Because it's a map of Ukrainian People's Republic, not a modern Ukrainian state. Crimean Tatars tried to create their own people's republic in 1917 and although there was an idea of unification with the UPR, it wasn't realised, and then both republic's failed against the bolsheviks (in Crimea it eventually happened earlier, in 1918).
It's a map of Ukrainian People's Republic, Ukrainian state at that time. We show the historical map which corresponds the years that we talk about in the video.

Thank you for watching and for your comment, good points.

The authors of this Holodomor were Georgian, not “Muscovite”, thanks very much.
@@maghdean thanks. I mixed up the first year of Ukrainians recognition as a country and the Holodomor.

Very nice story. I simply love that song.

Stay strong and free our little Swallows.. Russia will fail as it has always done. Slava Ukraine.

A beautiful piece of music. An even more beautiful people.
Slava Ukraini 🇺🇦🇬🇧💛💙
Lovely Christmas carol! A sad story of brutal russian terrorism! I didn’t know it originated from Ukraine!🇺🇦🔱Slava Ukraini!🇺🇦🔱
The map is wrong it shows Ukraine over modern Polish border and does not include Crimea
It's the map of the Ukrainian People's Republic, a Ukrainian state of that time.
Thank you for stepping in, yes, this is indeed the map of Ukrainian People's Republic.
Curious, why did you show your country on the maps without including your occupied lands, Crimea and the Donesk regions? They most certainly are part of Modern Ukraine. Slava Ukraine.
Thank you for your comment. The map here shows Ukrainian People's Republic, the state of that period that we talk about in the video.
🤣
A beautiful song and great informative background. BUT to use an incorrect map of Ukraine without crimea, donbas and southwest provinecs???????????
It's a map of the Ukrainian People's Republic, a Ukrainian state at that time
Thank you for watching. The map shows the terretory of the Ukrainian People's Republic, Ukrainian state at the time period that we describe in the video, not the modern Ukraine.
Liking K Indy.
Thanks!
Why show a map of Ukraine without including Crimea?
Ottomon Empire was spread across including Crimea. That is why the Crimean Tartars are muslim
I agree that the map looks wrong. The fact that it was a 1916 map should be emphasized.
Your map doesn’t meet international boarder standards.
It's a map of Ukrainian People's Republic, Ukrainian state at that time. We show the historical map which corresponds the years that we talk about in the video.
An historical map, before Crimea became part of Ukraine.
And rusziaNazzi invaded into Crimea 😂😂😂 lost it and regained it and gave it to Ukraine
So?
LOL
