Japan as a fighting nation is done, that was ended last century and they are absolutely not on a recovery path to what they were. They don’t have enough people. In reality, the lack of Japanese combat experience has minimal importance. Our (U.S.) experience over the last 20 years was not large-scale combat operations, especially within our Navy and Air Force. Well-designed exercises with the Americans, Brits, and Aussies will close the capabilities gap relatively quickly. I'm an Army guy and we lost a generation of experience in Cold War-like combat preparations. Everyone is scrambling to reorient our capabilities due to the war in Ukraine and the Russian threat.

I mean you always have to consider the opposition as well... which not to underestimate them or anything, but ... a brief scanning of wikipedia says their last successful naval battle may have been in 1683 vs rebels (ironically) based in Taiwan. Even when they bought "modern" (at the time) ships made in Europe, they got trounced by pretty much every actual navy they encountered thereafter. I was going to say they had zero effective experience, but this is more like a negative number due to a handicap for morale reasons.

Of course you don’t since you won’t be fighting the war nor paying for it. Hopefully, you are not one of the those tiny Eastern European / Baltic states that scream a lot but contribute almost nothing to NATO.
Who asked in Asia for a NATO?
US has bilateral relationships with countries. The only reliable allies that we have are Japan and Australia. Australia really doesn’t have huge navy and really depends upon on us for their security. Philippines is useless as a military partner and has flipped flopped with Duarte being pro-China and the sone of the dictator Marcos Jr a “US ally”. The next guy might be pro-China while the guy before Duarte was pro-American. I doubt that our navy has forgotten how we were kicked out of Subic Bay in early nineties. Philippines at most is a distraction like the Italian front in world war 2 to distract the Nazis as we invaded them from France.
You don’t have to agree with everything from Kishore Mahbubani but he has been right that even in SCS, the East Asian states will find a way to cooperate when America is encouraging war against China. We are a one and done navy as we literally have no excess shipbuilding capacity if our fleet is sunk in an East Asian war. Nearly 50% of the world shipbuilding capacity is in China while number 2 is Korea with number 3 being Japan. Together these countries are 94% of the world capacity when it comes to shipbuilding and that was two years ago. China’s shipbuilding program has only accelerated so it might be 95 or 96% between the three countries.
China will blockade South Korea and sink American ships so it is a non-starter for us to have shipbuilding facilities there. Japan is a possibility but they are still very close to China and can be blockaded like we did to them in World War 2. China can also use proxies to flare up trouble spots in Middle East and Europe to tie down our navy. Probably half of our navy is serving as Israeli coast guard at this point without any Chinese support of Hamas. China has more ships to spare and less area to cover in Asia unlike us. The reason that we won against Japan was that we had overcapacity in the US shipyards and Japan even failed to take out our ship repair facilities in Hawaii. Of courses, our ships had better firefighting capabilities once they were hit compared to Japanese carriers but there is something to the fact that we were able to put 6000 ships of all sizes to sea in the war. Japan just couldn’t sink enough of our navy after Pearl Harbor.

Australia's Chief of Navy was tasked to approach his UK counterpart about the possibility of acquiring nuclear powered submarines. The US became involved because the technology the UK uses is derived from the US and could not be given to Australia without the approval of the US. The whole concept including Australia buying American subs before building its own in partnership came from there. Canada were never in the loop.

19 European Nato members spend at least 2% in 2024. Combined Europe spends 380 billion dollars on defense this year. That is more than China, and about the same as China and Russia together. Europe will keep increasing spending every year with quite alot as well. So this narrative that many European nations don´t spend enough is not really accurate anymore. Europe is already strong militarily, but will be a force to be reckon with in the coming years. 600 million people, and higher combined GDP than the US, China etc. With increased defense spending they could possibly project alot more power in the world. Don't get me wrong, I am happy that Europe has finally decided to make meaningful contributions to their own self defense .... but 2% was always supposed to be the baseline .... the MINIMUM. Japan's desire to join AUKUS might be realized, but it's not as paramount to the security of the Asia-Pacific / Indo-Pacific region as other factors. Higher on the list would be that the US consider joining the CPTPP, so as to assure allies and friendly member states that, when it comes to cozying up to the United States, there's something in it for them in addition to military security. Further the US heavily influenced Japan’s decision to maintain only a defensive force so it’s only logical that we need to provide extraordinary defense support. And now that China has gone rogue, aligning with Russia and Iran, and Japan has Russia to the northwest and China to the southwest, their defense calculus has changed dramatically. Their decision is logical and timely, and greatly suits our evolving security interests in the pacific.

Since the announcement of "Pillar II" of AUKUS, there has been persistent speculation that Japan will eventually join the partnership; American Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel wrote that Japan was "about to become the first additional Pillar II partner" in The Wall Street Journal on 3 April 2024. On 7 April 2024, the Financial Times reported that AUKUS defence ministers will announce on 8 April 2024 that they will launch talks related to the expansion of Pillar II of the alliance. While many officials in the US government advocate the inclusion of Japan in AUKUS, notably Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, there has been push back for months from the UK and Australia partly in order to focus on ironing out existing complications in AUKUS, however primarily over concerns that Japan lacks the security systems required to protect highly sensitive information. - Wiki.

We should invite them into our thing and encourage them to keep building their military. I think the old culture is completely gone and this is not the same country we went to war against. I think they are also very competent people with a good work ethic. I think if they get attacked that they will fight hard and bravely just like they did back in the day. They are the type of people who are inclined to step up and do what needs to be done. Being warriors is still in their DNA, they now just want to avoid being assholes, which is good.
The United States have actually been pushing Japan to build up their military for years now. If we have to fight someone in that part of the world, I think we all know exactly who it will be, and it ain't Japan.

Look at how the USA is top toeing like a ballarina around Russia scared out of it's mind about escalation.
If somehow China was able to launch an invasion of Japan and NK with SK and both countries (who are nuclear armed and capable of striking anywhere in the pacific near instantly) declared that any American involvement would escalate a nuclear risk.
"The U.S. is not about to let anything, repeat anything, happen to Japan" The USA is not taking ANY (repeat) ANY Nuclear armed nation to war unless the USA is attacked first. If Japan was attacked by China and Nuclear threats were credible the USA would walk away and leave the Japanese to there fate.
Ditto Taiwan, Ditto South Korea. The USA is only interested in preventing a war by being there but if it turns hot the USA will find a very quick way out of the situation especially against a peer force and ESPECIALLY against a nuclear nation.

I would imagine this would be especially true of Japan as well.
Japan would only be party to PIllar 2 of the agreement which is entirely separate from the nuclear submarine aspect. Still this involves things the Japanese could excel in including hypersonics and quantum computing. Not only would the Japanese be able to secure their own information networks that way, but theoretically be able to hack everyone else who is not using such systems.

I have a friend who lived and worked in Japan for nearly 10 years theorize that the Japanese looking down on their military is the flip side to the USA's 'thank you for your service' attitude. During and after Vietnam Americans treated the returning soldiers badly for fighting in an unpopular war, but eventually the society realized that it wasn't the soldiers' fault. Japan has had a very real fear that the militarism that once plagued them would return, so they compensate by belittling the military instead of putting it up on a pedestal like it used to be.
