2009 IECC Section 402.2.3 and 2009 IRC Section N1102.2.3 reads: "Access hatches and doors. Access doors from conditioned spaces to unconditioned spaces (e.g., attics and crawl spaces) shall be weatherstripped and insulated to a level equivalent to the insulation on the surrounding surfaces."
R-30+ is required! Battic Door makes an R-50 Kit to insulate attic stairs that meets all Code requirements.

@bruno2260 We leave the trapdoor and architrave untreated as many customers like to paint or varnish these to suit their own home.

i find it easier to put a 4x 1 around the bottom of the frame of the stair unit and then put the architrave on ,then trim out the ope then lift the stair unit up and put 4 screws through the face of the architrave, then open the stairs and fix through the sides of frame, cheers im a chippy from dublin ireland
