In Java Edition 1.20.2, diamonds were made significantly more common. If you are playing in a world created before then, go to newly generated terrain before looking for diamonds. 2. 5:03 Mumbo is not correct here; diamonds actually have slightly _reduced_ air exposure. However, caving is still the best strategy due to the sheer number of blocks the cave exposes. 3. Underwater mining will actually grant you more diamonds. This is because the "reduced air exposure" rule does not apply in water. *IRON AND COAL:* 1. Iron and coal spawn abundantly at high altitudes. For this reason, you should look for a stony peaks biome to mine these ores. Stony peaks are found in warmer biomes, such as savannas and jungles. *COPPER:* 1. Dripstone caves contain twice as much copper as other biomes, so they are _the key_ to getting a ton of copper. *GOLD:* 1. Badlands biomes above Y=32 contain an absurd amount of gold. *LAPIS:* 1. You will find the most lapis ore at the transition between stone and deepslate.

Do some fun shenanigans like you did with Gri in season 6, start a war, build a grumbot(he misses his dads) make things go boom!! Your mental state is more important than anything.
This is why my preferred way of getting resources now is to make a ton of nightvision potions and then run/swim around caves and grab as much as I can before getting out. It’s crazy how much you can get in a relatively short time.
maybe you would enjoy using a Turtle Shell helmet for such diving expeditions They grant you 10 second of water breathing every time you get some air, so anytime you surface or use like a hole or door to breath, you will reset the 10 seconds. I find it very useful and with it I can basically stay underwater safely pretty easily

Videos like this take me back to 2012 watching Minecraft let's plays where the episodes were literally just mining commentary. I miss them dearly, thanks for the throwback, even if it was unintentional
I am loving the pace you're playing at this season. I really do appreciate that you're not jumping right into a massive build. Literally old school Minecraft with friends type gameplay
When we watch 27 hermits all day, we forget the challenges of SMP. It was great to watch a high caliber hermit struggling with resource gathering the same way I do. I love the direction this season is going and that doesn't detract from your beautiful megabuild last season. Keep up the good work mate.
I love how simple Mumbo’s episodes appear to be. There is nothing groundbreaking. No pvp challenges. He’s just… mining. And yet, the delivery of said content is superbly done. I was entertained every moment. The pacing, edits, comedic timing… all masterful. THIS is the Mumbo we all grew to love! ❤️
It really would have been helpful, but I feel like it's such a niche item that most people forget it exists even when it would be useful! Some other Hermits have explored Ancient Cities already so at least some people must have Echo Shards.
16:20 I love how Mumbo just rebounded and started again. Didn’t get frustrated or upset, just accepted it and came up with solutions. He just went with it, and I really like that about him. A good person.
P.S. mumbo, in an armor set the chestplate does a LOT more work than you might think. It's up to about half as much damage taken with the chestplate on. So getting a chestplate to swap to when you're in a cave will make you much tankier.
1:55 ive said that for years! Im known as the water witch whenever we play minecraft, and its cause of this! Less mobs, you can reach the ceiling, no fall damage, if you have enchantments youre fine, and no one else ever goes underwater so its easy pickings!
ayy, that's me too! any server I'm on, I'm in the water a significant amount, especially after I hit diamond enchanted gear. one modded server I got a diving suit and then grinded for the highest level respiration enchant we had, I stayed underwater a whole hour and the first bubble wasn't even flickering. so then, naturally, it was underwater cave time!!
5:02 Mumbo, you got it the wrong way around! Diamonds are *less* likely to spawn when exposed to air! That's why underwater caves are so generous and why you should also try to clear out sculk and moss layers to expose more rock
@@Sten43211 The only change that update added was one more type of diamond vein that can spaen in addition to the previous behavior. Nothing was changed about any other ore or the existing diamond patches.
You can also just drop a bed at the entrance to a large cave, set your spawn, then grab the bed when you leave. Then there's the recovery compass, but that takes raw materials you almost certainly don't have, and may not be able to buy.
SO the way diamond ore generation works, as i understand it or read a while ago: diamonds spawn more frequently when exposed to air, but spawn in larger veins when not exposed to air. this is why in caves you get a lot of singular diamond veins vs larger veins when strip-mining. BUT underwater caves are funky, because the cave generation is exposing more diamonds to player view, BUT they are spawning in larger veins because they aren't exposed to air. this is why underwater mining is probably the best way to find diamond in the current version of minecraft imo
Incorrect. Diamond ore veins are about the same size range regardless of air exposure or not, it's just that they have a chance to not spawn if exposed to air.
Night vision potions are highly recommended when lighting up the caves is optional (i.e. not near mob grinders). You'd be surprised how easy it is to miss diamonds on dark ceilings, especially if you play without zoom.
Mumbo truly is a youtuber of personality. Never thought I would enjoy seeing a montage of 12h of mining but this was a fun listen along type of thing. The video itself wasn't the main point I guess. Rather the audio
This is one of my favorite episodes of the season so far. Mining has always been tedious for me but seeing Mumbo do 12 hours of it gave me the itch to load into my own save and start mining!
I’ve been playing Minecraft for like forever. I genuinely forgot they even implemented this until I read comments. I always just resort back to old habits of trying to search for it or looking at coordinates. I assume Mumbo just did the same thing
This makes me want to build a base deep inside a water cave. Imagine drinking water breathing potion or just going in with Respiration 3 and stopping in small pit stops with some light, food and a small book shelf where you breath again and refresh. Then continue to the hidden base. A nice, relaxing 5 minute journey. Bonus if there's a custom ambient music playing in juke box.
Surely you'd just set up conduits? To be honest, was wondering if Mumbo was going to do that, but I guess with the bigger caves it exceeds the max range.
@@6022 I recently thought of making a water base with a conduit, for precisely the reason Mumbo discovered too. You are essentially adding another dimension and can fly everywhere, storage chests can be all the way up to the ceiling... might be fun
water-filled caverns are the best for ore mining for two reasons: 1. no hostile mobs (unless you're in a dripstone cave, in which drowned spawn) 2. the generation of ores is such that it avoids generating ores exposed to the surface/air. so in regular caves you wont see as many ores. but water is not considered surface/air. so there's tons of ores easy to spot and mine in water-filled caves. a few weeks ago in my SP world I went mining in water filled caverns under the ocean, and using silk touch, and only spending a couple of hours down there, I got over a stack of diamond ore blocks. also I reccomend using night vision potions while you do so, makes the water a lot clearer and brighter, and you can spot ores from further away
Im pretty sure they reverted the dripstone cave drowned thing because it was messing with normal drowned spawns above the surface and they said that they might come back to the idea when they have more tools to make it perfect
The formatting of your episodes this season, with the title cards and the little corner displays and all the other additional details, are so cool. It compliments your already super engaging commentary and style of video-making really well. Makes it super fun to watch your videos, even if it's just about mining!
I cannot overstate the value of night vision potions when caving. Because of how big the caves can generate now, it's practically impossible to light them all up with torches. Night vision potions will allow you to see every single block essentially in full-bright mode, meaning you'll never miss diamonds because it was too dark again.
I think Gem said in Grian's video that she wasn't sure if everyone else combined could even beat him. When you're ill and can't do anything but mine, you accrue an entirely different level of resources. Maybe if they all teamed up with Doc and a tunnel bore?
love how chill your editing is. no obnoxious sound effects and little music so i can just leave it in the background while i play other stuff, plus the cuts are at the best times
mumbo is casually just finding new ways/bringing small strategies to life, last season it was slime farming and now underwater mining(i doubt he's the first to do this but I guarantee this video will get at least 1 mil views and the word will spread on this new strategy)
Fun fact about water caves : Diamonds are programmed to generate way less when one or more sides are exposed to air . But water doesen't count so there's actually more diamonds in water caves
Small thing I love abkut Mumbo is how he explains what he did to increases the light. The little text saying he increased exposure by 2 stops is just kinda neat and as someone into cameras, i love little things like that
@@hreg5260in photography the exposure aperture diameter is arranged in so called "stops" each one being greater than the last by factor of √2, which changes the aperture area by factor of two, allowing twice as much or twice as low light go get into the camera. @@hreg5260 exposure is the amount of light that hits a camera. post means 'post-production', as in after recording, so he's basically saying that the footage was edited to be four? times brighter than the original footage.
hey mumbo, if you wanna avoid not knowing where you died, you could install Minihud to have your coordinates on screen at all times in the top left corner without all the other f3 stuff. Alternatively, you could also install GUI compass to have that only be displayed when you have a compass in your inventory, which is a nice integration into the game. Both mods are on fabric, which is also what you need for sodium or nvidium, and I hope you're already using either
Other than the plus points you mentioned about flooded caves (having free 3D movement and no hostile mobs) there's also more ores to find, because of the reduced air exposure in the ore generation, under water ores are not exposed to air, so there's more of them.
A while back I was playing with the Create mod and found a huge flooded network of caves right underneath my base. With the airtank from that mod you can remain underwater for several minutes without worrying about drowning or potions or anything, and because there were no mobs it was almost completely serene every time I went down there, it was really eerie.
Glad to see that I'm not the only one who enjoy underwater cave mining, it is kinda underrated. Since water is considered a block, diamonds and other ores spawn outside and can be seen.
Scar has over 81 stacks worth of diamonds while Mumbo has about 15 stacks. Mumbo mentioned the fact he only mined diamonds for 8 hours and he spent 3 stacks of diamonds. Meaning he averages 144 diamonds an hour(probably less because I should account for his spending and the fact he would still gain a little bit of diamonds during the 4 hours he wasn’t going for diamonds, but I’ll be favourable to him). So mumbos 29.5 hours of mining away from catching upto scar, assuming scar does no more mining himself.
@@goldenproductions9038 doc doesn’t care for diamonds since he can semi automatically farm them and they serve little to no purpose espically when he can just make a farm for almost everything each Hermit sells. However, since sand dupers are banned on the server, he cares for sand as seen in him charging sand as currency in his shops.
Mumbo you can still find your stuff if you craft a DEATH FINDER COMPASS (i forgot the exact name) but its a compass that points to your last death location
Strategy: find someone with a wood shop, make your prices slightly higher than his for the item frame shop. And then make a cow farm for leather and sell at a huge profit and minimal work.
Also another thing about the water cave at the start. More diamonds generate when there is water around it rather than air so water caves are just better.

stone diamond isn't really rare. you just have to go strip mining with a haste 2 beacon at the bottom of the stone layer and you'll find some within a few minutes
Cub did a video not too long again about great mining in the new caves. I recommend. Basically go to level -54 and mine in a straight line until you hit a cave. Then pop a night vision potion and run around collecting all the diamonds. Rinse repeat.

Pro tip XD, though i do not know how "ok" it is on the Hermitcraft server, you can use "F3 + C" button combo to copy coordinates even after death has occured then just paste it in the chat (ctrl + V) and youll gett coordinates
1:39 there's a high chance, since you found a block of raw iron ore within tuff, that what you found there was an iron tuff vein. It has a lot of iron and raw iron blocks wherever the tuff leads. They're rare and long and a good source of iron if you have the time, patience, and don't have an iron farm or refuse to make an iron farm.

*IRON AND COAL:*
1. Iron and coal spawn abundantly at high altitudes. For this reason, you should look for a stony peaks biome to mine these ores. Stony peaks are found in warmer biomes, such as savannas and jungles.
*COPPER:*
1. Dripstone caves contain twice as much copper as other biomes, so they are _the key_ to getting a ton of copper.
*GOLD:*
1. Badlands biomes above Y=32 contain an absurd amount of gold.
*LAPIS:*
1. You will find the most lapis ore at the transition between stone and deepslate.
thank you kind sir, I shall paste this in my notes today
May the gods gift you a stack of diamond blocks in your next survival world, thank you 🙏
17:24 Mumbo, do something you find fun, don’t worry about us. Yes we get excited when you do upload, but your mental health is more important.

Love how scar is making everyone go mining unintentionally

I hate dying with my best stuff. Big tip is having a recovery compass. But even if you don't have it. Just look up the recipe. It'll point to where to would actually be in the crafting table! Just have to break the crafting table and bring it each time.

At 18:23 you can see the baked potato that Grian sent him. I just thought I’d point it out because he didn’t and I found it hilarious!
I am loving the pace you're playing at this season. I really do appreciate that you're not jumping right into a massive build. Literally old school Minecraft with friends type gameplay
thank you for increasing the exposure mumbo!! makes it so so much better to watch!
I love it! 16:00 a recovery compass would help in that situation!
Came here to say that!
I always love to keep server playlists on, it’s not only calming but the progression that unfolds over the first few episodes.
P.S. mumbo, in an armor set the chestplate does a LOT more work than you might think. It's up to about half as much damage taken with the chestplate on. So getting a chestplate to swap to when you're in a cave will make you much tankier.
Why did I read it as Twanky??? Iv been online to long
1:55 ive said that for years! Im known as the water witch whenever we play minecraft, and its cause of this! Less mobs, you can reach the ceiling, no fall damage, if you have enchantments youre fine, and no one else ever goes underwater so its easy pickings!
ayy, that's me too! any server I'm on, I'm in the water a significant amount, especially after I hit diamond enchanted gear.
one modded server I got a diving suit and then grinded for the highest level respiration enchant we had, I stayed underwater a whole hour and the first bubble wasn't even flickering. so then, naturally, it was underwater cave time!!
the water witch is such a cool nickname!
Also, diamonds have a chance not to generate in when they are touching a block of air, but water is not air, so water caves have more diamonds.
5:02 Mumbo, you got it the wrong way around!
Diamonds are *less* likely to spawn when exposed to air! That's why underwater caves are so generous and why you should also try to clear out sculk and moss layers to expose more rock
as of 1.20.2 caving is much more efficient, compared to stripmines...
@@Sten43211 The only change that update added was one more type of diamond vein that can spaen in addition to the previous behavior. Nothing was changed about any other ore or the existing diamond patches.
@@lolglolblol Just o watch Cubs video on mining, caving is dramatically better than stripmining...
15:18 You're meant to use MiniHUD to have your coordinates visible at all times, so that when you die, you can note your location before respawning.
You can also just drop a bed at the entrance to a large cave, set your spawn, then grab the bed when you leave.
Then there's the recovery compass, but that takes raw materials you almost certainly don't have, and may not be able to buy.
7:47 Mumbo casually mining one of the rarest diamond blocks
wdym?
SO the way diamond ore generation works, as i understand it or read a while ago: diamonds spawn more frequently when exposed to air, but spawn in larger veins when not exposed to air. this is why in caves you get a lot of singular diamond veins vs larger veins when strip-mining. BUT underwater caves are funky, because the cave generation is exposing more diamonds to player view, BUT they are spawning in larger veins because they aren't exposed to air. this is why underwater mining is probably the best way to find diamond in the current version of minecraft imo
Boosting this comment a little, so everyone sees this! Thanks, tbh I actually didn't know that diamonds work like that :)
gimmi those balls

To be honest, was wondering if Mumbo was going to do that, but I guess with the bigger caves it exceeds the max range.

water-filled caverns are the best for ore mining for two reasons:
1. no hostile mobs (unless you're in a dripstone cave, in which drowned spawn)
2. the generation of ores is such that it avoids generating ores exposed to the surface/air. so in regular caves you wont see as many ores. but water is not considered surface/air. so there's tons of ores easy to spot and mine in water-filled caves. a few weeks ago in my SP world I went mining in water filled caverns under the ocean, and using silk touch, and only spending a couple of hours down there, I got over a stack of diamond ore blocks.
also I reccomend using night vision potions while you do so, makes the water a lot clearer and brighter, and you can spot ores from further away
Im pretty sure they reverted the dripstone cave drowned thing because it was messing with normal drowned spawns above the surface and they said that they might come back to the idea when they have more tools to make it perfect
@@leadharsh0616drowned still spawn in dripstone caves they reverted zombies not spawning in dripstone caves
The formatting of your episodes this season, with the title cards and the little corner displays and all the other additional details, are so cool. It compliments your already super engaging commentary and style of video-making really well.
Makes it super fun to watch your videos, even if it's just about mining!
The fact that he went so far just to get all of those resources means that the other hermits are gonna have a hard time trying to get resources
I cannot overstate the value of night vision potions when caving. Because of how big the caves can generate now, it's practically impossible to light them all up with torches. Night vision potions will allow you to see every single block essentially in full-bright mode, meaning you'll never miss diamonds because it was too dark again.
In terms of diamonds, this mining session was 11% more successful than the equivalent one in Season 7, although it was way worse for redstone and coal
Mining for 12 hours is rookie numbers compared to Scar’s mountain. But Grian is going to need your help if he wants to make a bigger one than Scar.
I think Gem said in Grian's video that she wasn't sure if everyone else combined could even beat him. When you're ill and can't do anything but mine, you accrue an entirely different level of resources. Maybe if they all teamed up with Doc and a tunnel bore?

mumbo is casually just finding new ways/bringing small strategies to life, last season it was slime farming and now underwater mining(i doubt he's the first to do this but I guarantee this video will get at least 1 mil views and the word will spread on this new strategy)
Fun fact about water caves : Diamonds are programmed to generate way less when one or more sides are exposed to air . But water doesen't count so there's actually more diamonds in water caves
Small thing I love abkut Mumbo is how he explains what he did to increases the light. The little text saying he increased exposure by 2 stops is just kinda neat and as someone into cameras, i love little things like that
What does that mean though?
@@hreg5260in photography the exposure aperture diameter is arranged in so called "stops" each one being greater than the last by factor of √2, which changes the aperture area by factor of two, allowing twice as much or twice as low light go get into the camera.
So increasing exposure by one two stops means you increase the brightness of the image four times.
@@hreg5260 exposure is the amount of light that hits a camera. post means 'post-production', as in after recording, so he's basically saying that the footage was edited to be four? times brighter than the original footage.

Hardcore UA-camrs: “so I did some off-screen mining…” 19:38
hey mumbo, if you wanna avoid not knowing where you died, you could install Minihud to have your coordinates on screen at all times in the top left corner without all the other f3 stuff. Alternatively, you could also install GUI compass to have that only be displayed when you have a compass in your inventory, which is a nice integration into the game. Both mods are on fabric, which is also what you need for sodium or nvidium, and I hope you're already using either
ah, sodium extra also has this feature
Mining red stone underwater is like a flashbang holy
8:30 IDK Mumbo, I'm pretty sure that by the time Scar takes down Ore Mountain, it'll be half as wide, and riddled with caves.
Since water is considered a block, diamonds and other ores spawn outside and can be seen.
make a new horn sound 13:50
"and i had a stack of diamonds on me! Ah~!"
Mumbo and Scar need to have an official competition to find who is the richest hermit, I swear they both claim to be it every season lol
Everyone knows it’s doc, tho
@@pallavparmar9818makes since. Scar was sick and didn't feel like recording during it which gave him more time to and energy to just mine

Combine
Book with fire aspect 2
Book with sharpness 5
Combine
Then combine those end results to get cheaper enchantment prices.

stone diamond isn't really rare. you just have to go strip mining with a haste 2 beacon at the bottom of the stone layer and you'll find some within a few minutes
With open cave systems, stone diamond ore is much more common than you think. It's the deepslate coal and deepslate emerald that's the real deal now.
Cub did a video not too long again about great mining in the new caves. I recommend. Basically go to level -54 and mine in a straight line until you hit a cave. Then pop a night vision potion and run around collecting all the diamonds. Rinse repeat.
That feeling of getting blown away by the sheer _scale_ of the caves has been a familiar feeling for me since _Caves & Cliffs._ So yeah, I _get it,_ my dude.

1:39 there's a high chance, since you found a block of raw iron ore within tuff, that what you found there was an iron tuff vein. It has a lot of iron and raw iron blocks wherever the tuff leads.
