Loved it as well, you can literally see the nervousness disappearing the more he stops thinking "I'm in front of a camera" and goes into "I'm talking about piano basics". It put a smile on my face
I’d like to thank you. The fact that you mentioned the two black keys being the centre of the piano was a light bulb moment for me. I remember people saying the middle C being the centre, in fact the two black keys equate to the D being the centre. I can now close my eyes and the keyboard is symmetrical between both hands. Cheers, top job.
Very helpful. Your videos are clear, precise and no nonsense :). I like that a lot and I find that all your tips are spot on. Not one has felt like a silly self-evidence
Has it crossed your mind that he may be a stutterer and is trying his hardest to speak fluently? Good for you if you've never had to go through something like this but you dont have to be such a dick.
@@evanescent3167 how is he being a dick? i don't know if this man has a stutter or not do you? maybe you are assuming things here and not him. also be nice to each other :)
Thank you very much for this tutorial. I found it helpful, especially the impromptu devices to help one get oriented (the fist to the fallboard, grasping the sides of the instrument, the pencil trick).
Especially true about sitting to close to the piano. I started playing 4 weeks ago and my wrist has been killing me for 4 days because I sat too close.
Been playing piano for 19-something years and my back hurts pretty quickly when I play. Never learned anything about posture. Also, I don't use a lot of the keys higher up on the piano (Around C2-C3 And up) so I personally tend to place myself a bit lower on the piano for a generally more comfortable playing experience. I will try to use your tips. I hope it helps! 😁 Thanks!
I just imagined, imagine if Bach was playing say passagalia and fugue in c minor to the public for the first time then at the highest tension he falls off his stool.
just happened to me today as well. Im 7 years in, and i was told to watch this and it really opened my eyes. I also was shown a video of me playing piano at a recital recently and i realized how shitty my posture was. We all need corrections in our life bro
Interestingly, have a look at the pedals of your piano. On my grand, the centre of the pedals lines up with the E key above middle C. I just realised this recently and I’ve been playing for years having been taught a middle C approach. I now sit in front of D/E which has made playing easier.
What is the piece that is playing at the start? I just sat down to work it out & had to slow this video right down but I got it & I love playing it even though I'm a real beginner ...
I have a 61 touch sensitive keyboard and I am waiting on an 88 key touch sensitive weighted key digital piano. I don't know why, but to get the sort of sound I need, it's like I am having to stab at the keys so to speak. My left hand also feels very restricted when playing basic chords, to the point that the harder ones are getting much to uncomfortable to play. I don't know if it's a question of me sitting too close to the piano or the piano not being at an appropriate height. I have seen so many of UA-cam placing the piano so fluidly that it looks like they are barely touching the keys. What could I be doing wrong/
Forgive me, you give me great advice. It's just I made mistake by reading the comment first then watch your video. Now I can't stop laughing, so soooorrry 😭
You do you. The idea isnt that if you DONT sit in the center, you will play badly. The point of the video was to give the most optimal position for playing piano, but its highly adjustable depending on the player and piece. I once played a sonatina that had extremely little on the left side, but all was higher ranged. My teacher recomended i sat a bit more to the right this time, and it worked much better.
my arms/shoulders get tired, i think its because my seat is too high or too low... edit: nvm i think its because i play for like 6hours+ straight every time... edit2: soo i set my seat to the highest and its sooo lighter to press keys, and my arms dont get that tired
W̴̤̄à̴͍l̴̞̅t̴̫́z̶̪͐ z̷̺̿t̷̻̾l̵̝͘a̶̛̞W̵̥̓ Hey man you got to remember something. All pianists talk differently like any other proffession. Even some proffessos talk like that even worse. The other thing is you can’t automatically say that tim is using cocane because you don’t even know Tim. If he was using cocane, he would not bee serious and high all the time. He takes his job serious man!!! Also a lot of people have different things that they do. All pianists like myself have our little things that we do. So don’t just assume that he is on cocane. You don’t know that for sure. He probably had been talking a lot and has a really dry throat. That can happen. Don’t just assume that he is using cocane because that could bee totally off. Just because someone sounds raspy does not mean that they are using cocane. That has happened to me a lot of the time. My voice gets raspy after singing and talking a lot. Let alone using your body to play the piano, because it is not just playing with your fingers. You have to breath and move and everything else. No wonder why we get raspy when we talk sometimes.
He meant that people have differnet seating positions along the X axis. some people lean/sit far forward on the chair (ive seen people sitting on the literaly edge of the chair but still playing well) or sitting all the way back/leaning back (people still play very well if it suits them)
Man i get annoyed when people relate age to piano. I know 2 year olds who play, and i know 93 year olds who just started. Just start if u have the motivation.

Word.
I mean, I've had professional piano players tell me the middle C is the center, so it's clearly not an established thing
The most accurate explanation I've been given. I needed it so much. One million thanks!

Thanks for the video. Our son is now six feet tall and it’s time for him to change how he sits at his piano - this video was helpful. Thank you.
