Agree - goths can be treated with suspicion by some without rational justification. I am non goth but do like a bit of darkwave/melancholia. Re the devil worship comment I do like The Devil & The Universe and some friends were suspicious but TDATU are 'tongue in cheek' satanists and produce good music IMO. Enjoy the darker side of life!
To be more precise, we will die. Gothic culture is reaction to our mortality. There are different ways of reacting to our mortality, and gothic culture contains all of them.

Just what I needed after finishing Castlevania, to indulge even more into the vampiric realm.
I'm exploring goth music out of curiosity. I was always drawn to the aesthetic but grew up in a very controlling environment and embarked on a similar marriage with devastating results. It didn't occur to me that I truly had a choice in how I expressed myself through makeup and hair, let alone clothing. Now I'm past 50 and changing everything in my life and putting my true self as a priority. Having been drawn to the goth aesthetic, I've decided to explore the music that inspired it to become a complete subculture that has endured.
I'm very pleased with the music. I thought it was something very different from what it actually is. It's spiritual in its own way. It's very balanced despite the dark/sorrowful bent. It retains a true beauty and the musicians are really sound. I'm looking forward to diving deeper with this. I'm watching goth makeup videos, as well. I like the idea of getting to hiding behind a mask a bit and just showing what I want other people to see and keeping myself less exposed to people I don't want to be close to.

When we put on a mask as a positive statement are we hiding our true selves or are we expressing our true selves (or at least a part of that self)? I play 'mas' at Carnival* and I'm never quite sure whether I love those two days because I can be someone else or - and increasingly I think this is true - I can be more myself. I think this sort of thing was better understood hundreds of years ago and we've largely lost that connection to masking, ritual and 'performance' except in controlled and unnatural situations like theatres, where it's ring-fenced for commercial gain. (* I really regret the loss of 'dark mas', which allowed us to express the more sinister and scary side of the Carnival tradition - it came out of slavery, after all, so was replete with devils, whips, chains, paganistic horned figures and general subversion and inversion of the rules of normal society. An after-dark Goth Carnival would be brilliant.)
