I heard this back in 1974, on a dark night, under the covers in my bedroom, and it REALLY scared me! I had never forgotten this episode, and it was so nostalgic to hear it again…although I knew how it ended this time. Thanks for posting.
This was not far after my 10th birthday and I remember it well. I believe they were broadcast on wjcl radio in Savannah, Georgia and I, my brother and my father listened all the time.
I remember in 9th grade in 1975, after listening on Sunday nights, having to write report on these for one of my classes. This was the first one I did and it remains my favorite.

Norman Rose as the villain with that wonderful baritone. I believe he could read the phone book to me and I would be spellbound.
