And this begs the question: why did it take so long? Alitalia has been on life support for decades. This from Wikipedia: _It has reported only one year of profit (1998) since its foundation in 1946._
But the net effect here is they're changing names, and letting Alitalia default on it's debt. It's going to largely be the same managment, same markets, same planes, and generally the same cost structure (same planes/airports) with the same revenue base. And still in Covid. How do we honestly expect any change?
Note: everything owned by Alitalia, including the brand and the name, will be put up for auction. It is entirely possible that ITA themselves or someone else might buy the brand rights and Alitalia might rise again.
No way. It is a matter of writing off past debt. The new entity CANNOT bear the same name of the old entity. The brand Alitalia is finished for good, and I doubt anyone will be intersted in buying it as there is no brand value if there is no operating buiness that goes with it.
@RAVINDRA SWAROOP Hi! Yes, I knew that. By the way there is an excellent documentary on the 2001 financial collapse of Swissair. The name is "Grounding - The last days of Swissair". It's in German but with English subtitles. Maybe you can find it on-line. I watched it twice, really good.
What’s doubly disappointing is that many years ago, I flew a flight from Newark to Rome that was a codeshare between Continental and Alitalia. It was fantastic.
I'm Italian and never heard this joke 😂. Anyway the service of Alitalia isn't bad. It's just the economic to be bad (Being in Italy, favouritism and corruption probably increased the economic problems of the airline)

Within one year or less most of Alitalia management, employees, airplanes, airports slots will be part of ITA, it is not because of a new certificate and planes painted in different colors that it is new airline , simply said it is ALITALIA 2.0 and I am glad it is.
Glad? Alitalia is bleeding money left and right, since decades. They only could keep flying because of the diligent italian taxpayers. It is in italy's best interest to not finance ITA, rather let it go bust for good.
I really don't think so. Unprofitable airlines like Alitalia are just dragging along, losing money every year, and unable to improve and innovate. A new airline is just what was needed. Italy will still have a flag carrier. Nothing to be sad about.
It's not exact. Italia (and me as one) is happy about that. And a lot also. Alitalia was a cancer in our economy. We pay 2 millions euros PER DAY, to let Alitalia survive. Was never profitable since the 46. Where really happy this giagantic failed company has finally closed
In 2000 there were negotiations for a merger between KLM and Alitalia. The negotiations were very difficult. 'The Dutch are complaining about the Italians because they promised to close one hub, Milan or Rome. It was not cost-efficient to use two hubs. And Alitalia would also be privatized, but when?' 'The Italians also complained about the Dutch. For example, the Dutch lunch consisted of cheese sandwiches and milk. They were dissatisfied with the food at KLM HQ.' As a result, KLM had to pay a fine of 250 million euros to Alitalia.

Alitalia was not able to compete with AF/KLM and Lufthansa in europe. For long and short flight + Italy has opened to many slots for Ryanair easyjet which took the entire business in Italy. I saw a couple times some flights from Paris to NYC with Alitalia which were 20-30% more expensive than af with a direct flight or klm with a stop in Amsterdam. They have to reorganize the company…
Alitalia wouldn't be able to compete, even if they would be the only carrier in europe. Their ventures were always sponsored by the government, there was never a reason to actually deliver.
Best of luck to the new Italian airline! Hopefully they will be able to bring the Alitalia Business's class service (one of the best) to the entire new airline in its entirety!!!!
In 2008 or so we had to fly from Rome to Paris to then connect to a flight to Houston - holding both tickets on AirFrance and Alitalia we decided to take the AirFrance flight as we were able to find the check-in counter and gate for that flight…we always wondered where the Alitalia flight had wondered off to…. I think that speaks volumes about the operations of Alitalia
Because of italian laws. Am not sure what exactly is different this time. Is it basically not a retrenchment and a name change, i.e. a bigger restructuring than previous efforts. Hopefully this one works.
Hey had to do this 10 years ago. Pilots blocked any options back then. Let's wait and see the new contracts and procedure detail for the personnel to see if they are aligned to the current market. In my understanding they were a big part of the reason why Alitalia was a money shredder.
If the EU had not intervened to say stop, the Italian state was ready to inject another 3 billion euros in this company almost run by unions and endowed with too many staff. They refused the 2019 pay cuts when the company was already on the knees, living on state aid. The best thing ITA could do from launch isto start with a lot of new staff with fresh minds
They shed the debt of Alitalia, the union contracts, and buy the Alitalia assets and hire the personnel unsaddled by the contracts. It may not work in the long run but it’s a new start.
So ITA is sort of like Alitalia 2.0 except it will start much smaller and not be bankrupt, but will acquire much more of Alitalia's planes and assets in the future. Interesting business move.
This now will give boost to Middle eastern airlines which are dominating the Aviation sector due to their geographical presence. They will now increase the frequency to the Italian cities. Sadly, Same is the case here in India, Air India which is the country's flagship carrier is also on Ventilator.
Ummm yes and no. I’m in finance. This is a classic ‘Phoenix’ move. Close the old, get rid of the unwanted including surplus and troublesome staff and unions, debt etc. Start fresh with cherry picking hiring, airplanes and routes and a clean debt slate. Classic move.
Flew them short-haul at least twice and had very pleasant experiences. Nice crews & adequately comfortable. They'll be missed. Hope the new airline joins SkyTeam.
How can an airline survive with so many different unions competing for power over this airline? Plus on European connections I hardly ever saw a remarkable service attitude, maybe due to the tiring effect of almost constant threat of insolvency. Let's hope that the new airline has a better future.
ITA? If they are serious, they should have put in some effort to come up with a strong brandname. This is poor marketing and branding right at the start. Moreover, an Italian airline will have it difficult. Management issues are probably built-in by design and they will never go to extents like Gulf/Middle East carriers to offer something that the markets will lap up. I neither like the new name nor do I have high hopes for the new entity. Really sorry for all the people at Alitalia.
the Alitalia that is shutting down has not been around for 74 years. It has gone through rebirths as a new company a couple of times, a new company that bought the brand name from the former bankrupt one. In some of the changes, the union that had caused the previous bankruptcy due to strike wanted to prevent the new carrier from restarting without giving in to the union's demands (arguing that by getting the Alitalia brand and buying aircraft from Alitalia creditors, the new version must inherit union contracts). This time around, it looks ike ITA can truly start from scratch without any baggage from its previous self. Remains to be seen how long this one lasts. And I bet that once old Alitalia is formerly disolved, the new one will start marieting its fligsht as Alitalia, albeit with different airline code.

the Alitalia that is shutting down has not been around for 74 years.
I had booket me onboard with Alitalia the October 5 and 7 so i can say goodbey to the proud national carrier of Italia.
