- In 2008, China's massive earthquake caused extensive damage to Sichuan province, destroying five million buildings and taking the lives of over 80,000 people, many of them children due to poor construction of the schools. A year later, an international team begin to search through the rubble for vital clues as to how the earthquake caused so much damage. Their findings may help save lives in future natural disasters.

I'm thinking engineers all over the world should finish their studies in Japan. They didn't really lose buildings during the 2011 earthquake. Most if their damage was due to the tsunami.
So sad! I don't remember hearing much about this when it happened in 2008.
China covered it up because the Olympics were in Beijing that year and they didn't want to many questions about building quality

You didn't hear much about this simply because there was no X, no TikTok, no Instagram, no smartphones back in 2008. And also the fact that many in the West still considered China a backward developing country back then made it less likely for them to pay attention to news in China.

As a Sichuan person, this Wenchuan earthquake will always be remembered by us, and every time I see it, Iwill cry...
I have a prediction. If you live where there's ever been an earthquake before, expect another one some time in the future and prepare accordingly. If you don't live where there's been an earthquake before, still make your buildings strong enough to withstand one because other things can also shake the ground too and the wind also applies lateral forces to buildings. The savings in money to construct something isn't worth the risk of it collapsing. Look at what happened to the Champlain Towers South.

The government is responsible for allowing weak buildings built with little or no resistance to seismic shaking. The sound building codes must be enacted and enforced for design and construction. In the Western countries and Japan where similar magnitudes of earthquakes occur, it's impossible to have this kind of losses in human lives and property damages because the structures are designed and constructed to seismic code requirements.
Do you realise that at that time they could't afford much better? 20000 USD was a lot of money in 2008 China.
Their buildings are very weak indeed,it's like there made from paper-mache.its certainly not fair on the people who live there in those poorly built properties.

Unfortunately Tofu Dreg construction is the norm in China. Between CC P incompetence and lack of concern, bribery of local government officials by contractors, it is a crap shoot as far as quality goes. Three Gorges Dam next on the list?

Buildings and structures in Japan have to be able to withstand earthquakes without collapsing or experiencing structural failures.
In areas known to be susceptible to earthquakes, certain building materials should not be used, for example, bricks or blocks, as these will crumble and collapse during an earthquake, as seen in countless news clips of earthquakes.
Yea but Japan didn’t withstand tsunami damage in 2012 though
Bricks are just not durable building materials in earthquake prone areas. Same thing happened in Afghanistan earthquake. So many houses and buildings collapsed and mostly were built with bricks. 😔 Japan should share to the world how they make their buildings earthquake-proofed then make it a world standard for building codes in earthquake prone areas/countries.
Not sure if every earthquake-prone country has the money or the will to follow it

And yet a 6.6 hit the same region only yesterday and it toppled like a house of cards to include landslides. It's a humungous region that is reeling in structural failure still so take this documentary with a grain of salt. The death toll os yet to be calculated however, many are homeless again.
