I cannot express enough how brilliant I think Stipe is. He's progressive, he's honest, unique, creative, ridiculously intelligent. What an incredible human.
BostonRedSoxForever *Groan! I don't get it! :-( I do know that Donald is nice and humble in his private little world of unicorns and wizards and where his fingers are a normal length and he doesn't need spanx to keep his fat gut from blocking his view of his dick when he takes a leak.
I grew up in the 90's... but this makes me an even BIGGER fan of the after this interview. Never knew much about this guy... he seems really down to earth and intelligent.
I don't care what anyone says, Michael Stipe is a living icon that revolutionized what a true artist is and can be. He sings, he writes, he paints, he creates. Someone who continues to think out of the box and gifts us with his magic
The artwork / colour of that book reminds me of the pop art artwork of REM's Monster album. I urge anyone who has a car to take 2 CDs with you - Out of Time and New Adventures in Hi-Fi. These 2 albums are actually just as - or more - 'country' as Automatic for the People sometimes get labelled. They are Americana at its best. REM were The Doors meets punk meets surf rock meets glam rock meets industrial rock meets pastoral meets folk meets funk meets blues meets soul (eg Tongue) and so on. Many songs are like mini films in their own right. Much of the first half of Out of Time , to me, is like a companion piece to that of Green. A quirky, upbeat opening song, a soaring second song, a pensive and mysterious third song, a very upbeat pop fourth song, a fifth song that suggests games in its title 'Endgame', 'World Leader Pretend' respectively. REM deserved every award going, particularly for Lifes Rich Pageant through to Up.
two great discs for sure, sadly my new truck doesn't have a cd player. it does hook to my ipod, however, and I frequently play both. especially new adventures. I also love accelerate.
Stipe and Letterman both spent the 2010s looking like Garden Gnomes. Both taught me so much about how to be a person and the very many ways to be a man (I'm female).
The one who waits for his turn to speak, the less pretentious one, person with a great speaking voice, one with more intelligence, one with better manners will be Michael.
suckittomcat that's not entirely true, although he's always been somewhat sexually ambiguous, he is currently I believe in a relationship with a man. Just as easily been a woman if he had fallen in love with her. Either way, what does it matter?
dprite1 It matters. I'm queer. It matters. You're right, though. Ambiguity is "safer" just like when Elton John first came out as the "safer" bisexual. But Stipe has said his sexuality is fluid (like mine) so I stand corrected. Gay just seemed easier to say (lazy). :-)
Bennie, looks like you have a different definition of Legend. When you make seminal music and everyone in the modern music industry respects you, you get the "Legend" tag.
he's more of an elf than he is a Santa.. It was in an 'Irish independent' article on Mon/Tues that St. Nicolas is buried in Thomastown.. he saved some kids.. the legend commercialised is said to be based on him.
Love the book with no pages, as even illiterate people can read it, love the concept as it says exactly what you want to read and escape with into never never land.
Man, haven't seen Michael Stipe in a hot minute. Digging the BEARD, it says, "I am tougher than the PAIN."(Michael Stipe not to be confused with Scott Stapp)
There's something so fatherly about him, he's just a wonderful man. Hell his last few albums may have been mediocre, but that doesn't stop him from being a legend.
Persuasive Barrier This election effects a lot of people but in very small ways. The only people who should be concerned are the ones whose job was working for the corrupt government selling us out, and even then it won't kill them to go find a real job. To hear everyone whining about how terrible it is that Donald Trump got elected and is going to bring jobs back is just sickening. It shows how these people have never had a real problem to deal with.
You got hit by a truck and all of the sudden you are the arbiter on what matters? You better bow down to your Syrian Refugee Overlords, cuz they have seen some shit aswell.
Bacchus Most of them aren't even from Syria. And no, I could've pointed out how whiny and overdramatic these leftist crybabies were last year, or the year before, ect.
love stipe and rem; don't agree with all his politics, but he's a pure soul who fronted one of the best live bands i ever saw..saw them at reunion arena in dallas, first show of monster tour in '95..serena altschul was broadcasting live with mtv..big event..stipe had just had hernia surgery two weeks or so beforehand and even told the crowd "i'm pretty much frozen from the waist down"..point is that the show went on, he did his best and u couldn't really tell..that's work ethic
I was I incredibly lucky to have met him once at '40 Watt Club💡' (had to throw that in there.) I don't care about his political views (either way). He, Mills,Berry and Buck are my most favorite artists ever. As soon as I saw that book, I looked for it online. Haven't found it yet but I would definitely buy it. Thank you Michael and the rest of R.E.M.for the many.....many years of amazing music. Hope to hear from you again......soon.
I grew up with REM, I first saw them in 1983 in a rollerskating rink, front row, general admission & not very full. Also at the Beacon Theater where they had to begin Radio Free Europe again because they messed it up. REM, and Michael were the voice of my generation in my humble opinion. Although I disagree with his position to free Chelsea Manning, I do believe she should be treated more humanely, but do her time. Totally behind him with the electoral college. No need to buy any album, already have them all. It's good to see Michael singing again
bennie hasha did I say I grew up in a roller skating rink? Grammar and punctuation are important in understanding a sentence Or you were trying to be funny. Choose, because either one makes you sound ignorant
I cannot express enough how brilliant I think Stipe is. He's progressive, he's honest, unique, creative, ridiculously intelligent. What an incredible human.
what a nice humble guy
Not humble. Michael is somewhat narcissistic as is evidenced by his "book". I wonder what the price is.
suckittomcat: And I thought, because of Donald Trump, narcissistic is the new "nice and humble"!
BostonRedSoxForever
*Groan! I don't get it! :-(
I do know that Donald is nice and humble in his private little world of unicorns and wizards and where his fingers are a normal length and he doesn't need spanx to keep his fat gut from blocking his view of his dick when he takes a leak.
not so much narcissistic as dadaist.
the yoyo wizard no correlation
He looks biblical, even for someone losing his religion.
Buenomars I see what you did there. Zing!
Buenomars you fucking genius
? you do know what that song means right.... lmao
Mitchell Brown It's a song about unrequited love, the feeling of love that can never be reflected back to you by your crush.
Andrew Mythheart lol even if thats exactly what it means how is that biblical? lmao
One of my favourite human beings - pulled out the stops for Bernie.
I love Michael Stipe so much. He is such a beautiful human being. He's a damn good dancer too.
Thanks you R.E.M. your music is helping me get through this time!
When he said butter their bread was he making a Dr. Seuss reference, if so awesome!
Man, I need one of those escape holes right about now.
Wonderful visit by Michael Stipe.
Everything I know about dancing I learned from Michael Stipe. People don't really invite me to parties.
Me too! Every time I watch him dance, I realize why I dance as I do.
+Meg L I'm glad I'm not alone in this. :)
Parties where you can't dance like Michael Stipe aren't parties worth attending.
Yeah, truth!
Like a full body dry heave set to music?
Fuck, he got old..which means I did, too. Fuck.
He's only 56. Not old by today's standards. So i tell myself. Sigh.
Robert's Art Studio How could he have got so old? Dude is only like 10 years older than me... Oh, right.
56 is pretty young. He's still younger than my mom!
Robert's Art Studio Anyone with a gigantic gray beard is going to look old, but he is no spring chicken
No way man, we are adding wisdom, and OK the weight of the stone...
I grew up in the 90's... but this makes me an even BIGGER fan of the after this interview. Never knew much about this guy... he seems really down to earth and intelligent.

Michael is the best I cant say any more......love you so much with all my heart and soul
One of the greatest lyricists ever
And unique vocalists

I SO, SO Love Michael Stipe. What a great human being is right. I'll be getting that album. I miss R.E.M.
Stipe and Letterman both spent the 2010s looking like Garden Gnomes. Both taught me so much about how to be a person and the very many ways to be a man (I'm female).
"It's the end of the world as we know it...".
I got all emotional. I think I'm in love. Again.
Very well put Michael Stipe. 🎼
Let it be noted that this man didn't stroke his beard during this interview. He didn't stroke it..... not once!
4:36 im so sorry
TedBearMan Fuck!
2:33 we will remember u always
Hurb Snarebergowitz Ahh!
I was actually stroking my little one while reading this comment :D
REM shaped me into the person I am today.
I am a murderer.
A murmurer ?!
How many have you killed!?
Nice book.. but I'd rather have an orange crush.
I need this book! REM is the band I've been listening to the most through COVID-19.
A real, living Gnome.
what a gem
"It's been a rough year." Oh, Michael, if only you knew then what I know now.
If bearded Letterman interviewed Stipe, how would we know who is who?
The one who waits for his turn to speak, the less pretentious one, person with a great speaking voice, one with more intelligence, one with better manners will be Michael.
I think he's starting a whole line of Acme products.
His talking voice sounds nothing like his singing voice.
will always be cool to me. l love this guy.
True legend right there boys and girls ^
rip in peaced cliff
Don't forget gay.
suckittomcat that's not entirely true, although he's always been somewhat sexually ambiguous, he is currently I believe in a relationship with a man. Just as easily been a woman if he had fallen in love with her. Either way, what does it matter?
the 'legend' is that he has any Real talent....
dprite1

Thumbnail looks like David Cross in disguise :)
Sinan Kargı this is why I clicked the video.
so in love! our of time was the whole soundtrack to my youth! I will always have a place for Michael and R.E.M in my heart.
being 45 and this band is my generation of music its sad to see him look so much older.. hes such a cutie no matter and I love REM>> always
He's the hipster elf on the shelf!
"Thank you for docking your tug boat to be here" 😂
I love this man. I wish I could be more like him.
this is a goddamned legend here. theyve helped more people than anyone can admit.
Bennie, looks like you have a different definition of Legend. When you make seminal music and everyone in the modern music industry respects you, you get the "Legend" tag.
He is Not only a human as we would need more of them he is a unique Cosmopolite Now would be a good Time Sir
"It's been a rough year", 2016
Looking forward to the 2020 interview....
awww I wish Stephen had asked him about his vocal support for Chelsea Manning. It's officially her birthday right now and she's had a VERY tough year.
The electors need to be patriots? What could that possibly mean? Celebrities are losing their minds.
Such a humble funny beautiful talented man. Love forever!
haha, thank's for showing up and docking your tugboat!
Legend right here! He looks so happy. Good to see!
lil' wayne writes albums with no music
what else for heads without a brains to listen to.
Utopian National Anthem (John Lennon).
Wow, he seems scattered. And looks so different. But I love the book, and he ends on a very sharp note!
What a sweet guy
I thought it was David Cross doing a parody (just in the thumb nail)
SpecialHandlingUnit I thought it was David Cross.
WestCoastPCbuilder Now I want a David Cross, Michael Stripe dual interview/performance/Rabbi dance off.
Matisyahu can't come.
thought it was David Cross in the thumbnail
Me too!!!
Weird, I thought it was David Spade.
Chesty LaRue I thought it was a Duck Dynasty member.
he's more of an elf than he is a Santa.. It was in an 'Irish independent' article on Mon/Tues that St. Nicolas is buried in Thomastown..
he saved some kids.. the legend commercialised is said to be based on him.
I think he was a semi dwarf or little person from a history encyclopaedia page on him & a statue pic; hence elves
From the thumbnail I thought it was David Cross playing a character
How do we know that isn't really David Cross under that beard?
I ask that question every time I look in a mirror.
David Cross couldn't possibly sound like this if he smoked five packs a day, so there's your clue.
The nose is not hit flat with a hammer.
"That's me in the corner, that's me out of the spotlight losing my Norelco."
25 years since Out of Time. Wow. That was one of my first CDs.
2 words: Garden Gnome
That hat makes him look like Papa Smurf
Love the book with no pages, as even illiterate people can read it, love the concept as it says exactly what you want to read and escape with into never never land.
Legend
Man, haven't seen Michael Stipe in a hot minute. Digging the BEARD, it says, "I am tougher than the PAIN."(Michael Stipe not to be confused with Scott Stapp)

Michael Stipe's "book" is like Yoko Ono-style "art."
I'd buy that for $300 before I'd buy Apple's book.
He looks like a cross between a Christmas Elf and the Santa on Miracle on 34th Street
He looks way older tha he actually is. He looks like 75 and he is 57.
Yeah!
so he did the real life of family guys Wish it, Want it, Do it?
Seems like a cool guy, greets everyone ass-first and I want to see his photography
Yeah, and that WOULD definitely be a great Christmas gift on Monday...
that voice
He looks great for 73
He looks like one of the dwarves in snow white
Fjallraven pants, this man is prepared to bug out anytime.
This answers "where is the cartoon escape hatch for me?"
roy keane lost his irish accent real quickly
Life And How To Live It.
Beard of the month club winner!!!
To get yourself in the holiday spirit, listen to REM singing "Christmas Griping".
Skid Row Santa lmao
This man is such an interesting, talented, beautiful human being. Wish he was a friend of mine.
wow the last -time they performed was 2011, man that seems like ages ago
This year I got hit by a truck and woke up in an ambulance and I'm calling this a good year. Stop whining.
Persuasive Barrier

Bacchus Most of them aren't even from Syria. And no, I could've pointed out how whiny and overdramatic these leftist crybabies were last year, or the year before, ect.
WisMicYal11 Enlighten me then, why is it that Trump getting elected is such a terrible thing?
Wow. Late 2016. Electoral college. And what happened next? Bravo, Michael.
1:08 Am I the only one disturbed by how quickly Stephen said "matter of fact."
it's great to see mike again
Elves Impersonator
love stipe and rem; don't agree with all his politics, but he's a pure soul who fronted one of the best live bands i ever saw..saw them at reunion arena in dallas, first show of monster tour in '95..serena altschul was broadcasting live with mtv..big event..stipe had just had hernia surgery two weeks or so beforehand and even told the crowd "i'm pretty much frozen from the waist down"..point is that the show went on, he did his best and u couldn't really tell..that's work ethic
Came for the beard, was not disappointed :)
OMG, that entrance made me think of a dog greeting
I was I incredibly lucky to have met him once at '40 Watt Club💡' (had to throw that in there.) I don't care about his political views (either way). Maybe because the book with no pages doesn't really exist. Another Stipe practical joke.
that's a beard to write home about
I really love Michael!
"Hey now that's not very nice, I don't sound like that at all! You're making me sound like Michael Stipe."
Belleza de hombre cuando era joven
Y ahora mantiene esa mirada
Lev 'Leo' Tolstoy look...anyone?
He's so nice and cool, I wish REM would make a comeback!
I grew up with REM, I first saw them in 1983 in a rollerskating rink, front row, general admission & not very full. bennie hasha did I say I grew up in a roller skating rink? Grammar and punctuation are important in understanding a sentence
Or you were trying to be funny.
Choose, because either one makes you sound ignorant
bennie hasha well that's a well argued point of view. Very mature. By the way my mother's been dead for 10 years so I hope you had fun last night
If punctuation is so important, then why didn't you put periods at the end of all your sentences? Makes you seem kind of ignorant....
thank you for docking your tugboat....
Homeless man, Moses, Grizzly Adams all rolled into one.
