The next government will have some difficult decisions to make. Banks, policy makers, investment fund managers, and Ottawa oligarchs pushed Canada and much of the developed world into a position where household and individual wealth is tied up in their homes (likely since it’s perpetually taxed and requires debt they control in order to obtain). With funnelling so much wealth into residential property, there was incentive to inflate housing prices, control the market supply and demand, and ensure the networth of households increases even if it comes with crippling debt or a destabilized real estate market. In other words, if adjustments are made and housing prices fall broadly there are generations of mostly older Canadians who lose money on paper. However, if no adjustments are made, stable homes and communal stability may remain a pipe dream for younger generations and newcomers to Canada. To fix this, we’d have to do more than just build many more homes. There needs to be a robust plan that addresses foreign and corporate ownership over multiple residential properties, immigration reform, addressing wage stagnation and a lack of income mobility, developing infrastructure outside of the major urban hubs of Canada; it’s a tall order and difficult task I hope the Conservatives are ready for.

@@Erelleye4444 The thing is, having more government housing programs won’t work. Trudeau thinks having more programs will build more homes, when in fact it did the opposite. The Chrétien government in the 90s got rid of housing programs, and housing affordability actually improved. If we did the same thing today, more housing will be build and they will be more affordable since we will have more supply. If provinces want more money, they will have to build more homes. If they build less homes, they will get less money. That’s what Pierre wants and it is not only realistic, but it is also fair.

Bizarre that Trudeau wants the government to own the land in which Canadians live, denying the people the benefits of owning land!
