I feel calves are probably the most genetically limited muscles to build. Meaning that anyone can build theirs bigger, but some aren’t going to get the results they want. That goes with every body though, right? Calves are just even harder if you ain’t got them. I built much better calves by doing them every other day for years. Same lifts you show and talk here, Jay. Thanks

exaclty, what most people miss about calves is the recovery period. you should literally work them every 2 days if you're have lagging calves. Once or twice a week youre wasting your time.

@@devonmartinbasson It'll obviously work because as long as there's at least 2 days between workouts and enough stress being applied a muscle will grow. But you're on some BS saying 2x a week is useless,it'll work well too but not as fast. That's like saying training back or chest 2x a week is futile. It works but 3x is better for strength gains and hypertrophy too

I’ve always struggled with small calves even after training them every day they weren’t sore for 2 years straight. Ive looked for just about every solution or workout routine possible and what I’d realized is most people with naturally big calves grew up with an athletic background or were overweight. When I started running 10 miles a week I grew almost an inch in two months. Sometimes the calves are not the issue, the ankle and tibialis muscle are just underdeveloped.

I do almost all sets in the 8-12 range for all muscle groups . . . except calves. I go 20-30 reps. For years I did 8-12 for calves too, but I never felt a burn or pump in that rep range, and the growth was so so. I get way better results with the high reps, who knows why. Might be worth a try for anyone struggling to beef their calves up.

I've heard many people talk about this, I think it is relates to the concept of Nucleus Overload, when obese, your calves endure tons of volume (literally) every day just by you walking around, and thus over a long period of time become very well developed. I've never seen a fat person have small calves when they lost weight.

    • @oliver_siegel
      @oliver_siegel Рік тому

      Same!
I've previously heard that a lot of people bounce too much which actually doesn't give that "deep stretch" at the bottom that he mentions.
Apparently it helps to let the mechanical tension dissipate before doing the next rep.
It looks like Jay might be doing an extra squeeze at the top of his movement to get that maximum contraction. So he's not bouncing, i think, instead I believe he's doing:
      Lift, squeeze, lower
He just does it fast so it looks like a bounce.
But I'd love to hear if someone has other thoughts.

When I first started gym, I didn't noticed much difference in my upper body but my quads and calves both became big and defined. For calves I only did calve raises 3 sets of 12 reps on smith with heavy weight. So I would say that its genetics that really matters.

Skipping rope 10-20 mins before working out will get you bigger calves…. Seated calve raise, and doing calves on the inverted leg press… helps a lot.

I have naturally big calves, so I'm pretty thankful I don't have to push them, I do some weightless donkey raises each leg day.

Arnold did them on every workout. That's the best and sure proof approach if you have small calves. Do them every time you train. Between 6 and 12 sets

Calves are genetic in certain ways which can’t be changed but they can get bigger more ripped and more defined

The secret to big calves is do them as soon as you walk in the door. You will never skip them and its not like your gonna do calves and then leave.

I’m sure you’ve all heard this, but calves have insertions and origin points as do all muscles and like all other muscles, genetics dictate those insertions and origin points. So yes, anyone can build bigger calves. The problem comes when your calves aren’t long, as in when the gastrocnemius and the solus turn into the Achilles tendon. That is decided by genetics and typically the longer the calf muscle is, the most aesthetic or the more “big” it will look as well as the better training will have on it. You can train your calves to get bigger like any muscle, you just cant train it to get longer
