Why would an omniscient god deliver messages of eternal importance in writing, knowing your target audience would be about 98% illiterate for many hundreds of years? And also knowing that any literate clergy would distort these "scriptures" for their own benefit. Doesn't seem very god-like to me.

Yet instead he chooses a remarkably illiterate part of the world (even back then) to reveal himself. It does raise a few suspicions.

My husband became an atheist by reading “The God Delusion”. He is still depressed… Somehow he thought that he would see his mother again somewhere… Me , I have been a non believer from my early teens. It’s because my grandfather was such a pious man that I read the Bible and started to think about what I was actually reading. Being raised Roman Catholic it’s not easy to start questioning things. Especially because I have fond childhood memories of sitting next to my grandfather while he read stories from the Bible. Now, I know that I would have the same fond memories if he would have read fables from the Grimm brothers. Which, seen the cruelty in them ,they very well could have been. As a child I used to go to bed and talk for a while to God… I must admit that it was comforting knowing that someone mighty was protecting me. However it’s like Richard Dawkins said in the last few minutes of this video. It is letting go of an imaginary childhood friend. Growing up and accepting the beauty of reality. The world is so much more wonderful and complex without a God.

The biggest problem I have with religion us that it just seems to create another in group/out group mentality, we can be arrogant and treat people badly because we're better, we know the secret so are superior, others are immoral not because of what they do, but because they don't believe what we do.

    • @JArchie123
      @JArchie123 6 місяців тому +6

That’s a good point, but I think it is also important to consider that if a religious person treats someone wrongly because they believe themselves to be superior, they are a hypocrite, and don’t really follow their religious texts. For example, Christian’s are taught to love thy neighbour, so if that are treating someone who is not religious as inferior, they are not following their religion properly, and that is not the fault of that religion or God but the fault of that individual.

I see a lot of evidence that what you describe is what atheists do. They will often say they use logic, rationality, evidence, etc. acting as if they are the only ones (or worse, acting as if they actually do when they don’t).
There are many including Gervais who will say an adult believing in a god “is embarassing” which conveys superiority and arrogance and treating people badly because he thinks he is better. And he is not the only atheist who conveys things like this.

    'I am' an Ex-Christian and this is why. Christians ALWAYS talk about the power of Jesus, the holy spirit, God... How one must be saved or else. The millions of innocent people who gave their lives thinking they we're going to be saved in the hands of 'cult' leaders. The lies and deceptions the 'Church' keep's reiterating time and again. These 2 bible quotes (Bare with me) Shows how the NT is manmade propaganda. John 14: 12-14;
"... whoever believes in me will do great works I have been doing and they will do even greater things than these..." Mathew 14: 31 " Oh thee of little faith:
This shows by the words of Jesus Christ himself. (Supposedly) That Christians or anyone who believes in him can do even greater works than Jesus himself. Even Peter had the faith to briefly walk on water. (Supposedly) So, as of 2024. 2000 years after the birth of Christ, have I yet or anyone else see Christians perform greater miracles than what Jesus claimed himself, he can do? Where's the mass curing of cancer, disease, famine, war, natural disasters...? So, there is either a problem with the story, (Bible not being true) a problem of faith or Jesus plain out lied. I ask YOU, which do you think it is or is there another possibility I over looked. I'll leave it to the reader to decide.

Second Dawkins himself expresses faith that just because we have made some advances that automatically means we will answer other big universal questions.
Third the individual pointing out the 34,000 Christian denominations is first using an argument ad populum that you can tell something just by the pure number of people with a belief or not.
Fourth that same person hasn’t logically analyze why it is very explainable that there would be many different denominations and religions if there was a god.

“Desperately want to believe”?? I have absolutely no desire to take any genuine truths away from myself.
It was a brilliant video and I have, and continue to, question just about everything in life. This is how we advance as a species.
Darwin, evidently religion’s biggest enemy, didn’t completely solve the theory of evolution however there is genuine evidence throughout the planet of evolution taking place. Not fully solving an equation doesn’t detract from the truths behind it. Nor does it add validity to the argument for creationists.
Richard Dawkins is first and foremost a scientist and science knows nothing is ever 100%, thus of course he would say what he said. There are always unknowns. Yet again, those unknown factors don’t mean that the creationist ideals are suddenly correct.
Third, the person who pointed out the 34,000 denominations wasn’t trying to prove any specific point, he was pointing out a major fault in the “logic” of religions and beliefs in an omnipotent deity.
Since in your words it’s “very explainable” why there would be many different denominations and religions IF there were a god, please feel free to explain it.
You trying to be an intelligent [sounding] person with a cause to defend religion and some invisible being in the clouds and your dream of an everlasting life after death is laughable at best. Trying to group me with atheists doesn’t work, I’m not one of them. Atheism is in itself a faith based group of sorts and I don’t share that.

    • @tjones5719
      @tjones5719 6 місяців тому

@@ryandubyah2345 You just made a post providing more evidence you don’t question.
“”Desperately want to believe”??” Evidence one. Feigning confusion when something is explained is a deflection technique used by individuals who don’t want to have their beliefs questioned.
“I have absolutely no desire to take any genuine truths away from myself.” Evidence two. Repeating that you supposedly value truth despite evidence to the contrary is a technique trying to convince the person saying it that it is true despite the lack of evidence.
“It was a brilliant video and I have, and continue to, question just about everything in life.” Evidence three. You restate both the videos brilliance with no ability to refute what I said (similar to the technique above) and you also without evidence claim you question again despite the evidence to the contrary.
“This is how we advance as a species.” Evidence four. You add in a statement that I did not question (actually promoted) as a failed attempt that by association your other statements must also be true.
“Darwin, evidently religion’s biggest enemy, didn’t completely solve the theory of evolution however there is genuine evidence throughout the planet of evolution taking place.” Evidence five. You acknowledging he didn’t solve the theory shows the video was inaccurate as I said but instead of admitting this you again try to desperately grasp on to a truth (that there is evidence for evolution) to deflect your original inability to question.
“Not fully solving an equation doesn’t detract from the truths behind it. Nor does it add validity to the argument for creationists.” Evidence six. You now move the goal posts and strawman pretending I said something counter to these items when all I did was show you didn’t question a fallacy within the video. Once again you use this to avoid as you don’t question.
“Richard Dawkins is first and foremost a scientist and science knows nothing is ever 100%, thus of course he would say what he said. “. Evidence seven. Another moving the goal posts and a non sequitur. I point out that Dawkins shares faith that things will be answered and you use these logical fallacies to avoid admitting that is true.
“There are always unknowns. Yet again, those unknown factors don’t mean that the creationist ideals are suddenly correct.” Evidence eight. You now move the goal posts and strawman pretending I said something counter to these items when all I did was show you didn’t question a fallacy within the video. Once again you use this to avoid as you don’t question.
“Third, the person who pointed out the 34,000 denominations wasn’t trying to prove any specific point, he was pointing out a major fault in the “logic” of religions and beliefs in an omnipotent deity.” Evidence nine. You strawman as I never said he was trying to prove something and you do this to avoid the logic I did question of his which you couldn’t refute.
“Since in your words it’s “very explainable” why there would be many different denominations and religions IF there were a god, please feel free to explain it.” Evidence ten. You having to ask rather than being able to question yourself is again evidence you cannot question. Let’s see if you can show some questioning skill before I just do your questioning for you.
“You trying to be an intelligent [sounding] person…”. Evidence eleven. This is called overcompensating as I haven’t made a point of my intelligence and you calling it out indicates you feel inferior. But you turning it into an attempted ad hominem is more of your inability to question your own failings.
“…with a cause to defend religion and some invisible being in the clouds and your dream of an everlasting life after death is laughable at best.” Evidence twelve. This strawman of yours is both a projection and a lie. I didn’t once defend religion, I questioned the errors and failed logic in the video. And you lie and strawman by trying to pretend I am a theist when the evidence should have told you otherwise.
“Trying to group me with atheists doesn’t work, I’m not one of them. Atheism is in itself a faith based group of sorts and I don’t share that. Mass delusion doesn’t create truth.” Evidence thirteen. Now you lie saying I grouped you with atheists when I did no such thing as the post I made showed.
Evidence fourteen. I might as well also cover you not quoting or using my words (which would have been evidence) is also a way to not question and promote your logical fallacies which again is more of you not questioning.
“It means absolutely nothing, the amount of followers involved. It’s just monkey see, monkey do”. Evidence fifteen. Again you actually state a truth to pretend it has some bearing when in fact you should have agreed with me that the argument ad populum is invalid. But you didn’t just agree because you couldn’t question.
All this allows us to conclude you don’t question and the video was not objectively brilliant.

*//"Second Dawkins himself expresses faith that just because we have made some advances that automatically means we will answer other big universal questions."//*
      A few problems there:
      1) You're implying/subtly-Admitting that "Faith" IS Bad, solely just in Attempt to also claim/imply that "He/y'all are Just As Bad As Us(/Faith-based Religions)". A faulty or erroneous attempt at Moral Equivalence.
      2) You're also utilizing Equivocation, whether you realized it or not, by way of associating "Faith" with Your Beliefs in the Genuine Sense but simultaneously applying a Colloquial (and Still Partly-Inaccurate) Definition when concerning Dawkins's convictions about the future.
Faith [Religious] = "Belief in a Deity or Higher-Being, on the basis of 'Spiritual' Apprehension rather than proof or evidence."
Faith [Colloquial] = " *COMPLETE* Trust or Confidence in someone or something."
Dawkins only has Trust in that conviction, and fairly well-justified trust to be sure, but Not Even Remotely or Necessarily "Complete" Trust... he's perfectly free to doubt that and be skeptical to his heart's content at any point, because he doesn't Stake his Entire Worldview on the Basis of the Truth of that Conviction Alone. Case-in-Point: Problem 3 below.
      3) He literally said (about a "Darwin-Like [Comprehensive] Explanation for the Origin of the Universe"): "One day maybe they will [explain it], one day maybe they Won't.". That's not even anything Close to "We proved B, which means we'll Automatically prove C.". You shouldn't be so intellectually dishonest.
*//"Third the individual pointing out the 34,000 Christian denominations is first using an argumentum ad populum... "//*
False. His argument was in no way Any attempt to claim something was true on the basis of the number of people who think or believe it to be true. If he were, then he would've mentioned the Likely-Trillions of Atheists/Nonbelievers throughout anatomically-modern human existence and Necessarily would have had to specify something like "They were right/correct". Instead... it was just a Comparison of numbers of peoples who believe different things (including Other Religions), posed as a rhetorical appeal to skepticism, because they intrinsically, logically, and literally Cannot ALL Be Correct (least of all About Everything).

      1. **Nature of Science**: Science is empirical and deals with the natural world as it exists. It is not a closed, self-contained system like mathematics or logic.
      2. **Scientific Theory Evaluation**: The primary criterion for evaluating scientific theories is **evidence**, not proof. Scientists prefer theories with more and better evidence.
      3. **Tentative and Provisional**: All scientific knowledge is **tentative and provisional**. No theory is final; it can change based on new evidence or better alternatives.
      4. **Binary vs. Gradual**: Proofs are binary (either proven or not), while scientific theories exist on a **gradual spectrum**. Some theories are more credible than others¹.
In summary, science seeks truth but never reaches absolute certainty. It continually refines our understanding of the world, making it an exciting and dynamic field of exploration! 🌟🔬

Sometimes I worry that too much of the argument against religion is coming from people who don't know how less blessed some people are and that they sometimes need a crutch. I don't go to church, but I don't hate or denigrate people that do, despite that they might hate me or delve in hypocrisy. Peace isn't the absence of struggle, it's the acceptance of it.

Not all religion is theistic as for instance Zen Buddhism is most decidedly not. Yet attending a Zen chanting service or perhaps a Pure Land service one gets a sense of the numinous without the theistic ranting which prevails in the more Neanderthalic branches of Christianity.

The Creator or God exists outside of religion therefore denying 'His' existence because religion does not make sense is small mindedness. It doesn't look that far up if you think it is a thin band which one day will be rolled up like a blanket. I have been telling this thing that in quantum physics it could be said that energy exist forever since the law of conservation of energy states that " energy could neither be created nor destroyed it only transform from one to another" in which sense it means energy is there forever. Second thing I have been telling also that consciousness is inherent in nature in the quantum realm as what showeded in the experiment of double slit board where it seem that particles have consciousness in my view. To support that claim Masaru Emoto's experiment shows that water in jars reacted to words spoken the them. Another thing is that air seem to respond to blow more when farmers whistle when they want more air, which led me to conclude that particles at quantum level have inherent consciousness or in totality the universe is conscious.
Considering it collectively energy and consciousness are inherent in nature. With these energy and consciousness it could originate species and also made the galaxies to arranged by themselves. Being conscious they could evolve by themselves, yes? On the other side to prove that there is what you claim the all powerful and merciful God, go to cancer hospital and look for 20 patients and ask God for complete healing, that is the way if we want scientific proof like testing a cure of covid, yes? Ok game do it. If you couldn’t do it simply means your are embracing a lie your theory is wrong.
Thus there is no "all powerful and merciful God", no hell, heaven and rapture which made to control people.

Are you in the US by any chance? America is very much an outlier in the developed world, with a religiosity far more akin to the Middle East and Third World than any other advanced nation. Here in Europe nobody gives a toss. In the last UK census the majority of the population declared themselves to be non-religious; and in Scandinavia the percentage of atheists is even higher, religiosity being a distinct minority approaching endangered species status.
This is why the rest of the world finds the situation in the States so amusing (and scary). The religious right spouts nonsense about atheists as if atheism is some kind of minority cult...totally oblivious to the fact that as far as the rest of the advanced world is concerned THEY are the minority cult...and outstandingly ignorant.
As Marcus Aurelius put it 2000 years ago: -
Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care about how devout you have been but will judge you based on the values you have lived by.
If there are gods and they are unjust, then you should not care to worship them.

One of the many things that turned me off to religion was prayer. The idea that by simply talking (or thinking) to yourself about an event that you are asking the "creator of the universe" to make happen is utterly delusional. You can't even describe what form this deity has based in reality, but somehow you can communicate with it simply by talking to yourself? That doesn't sound crazy to you? Seriously.
Theists say that if your prayer isn't answered that it was "God's will". Or that it's "not the time" for your prayer to be answered. Which, in both cases, is no different than there being no god at all.

If Consciousness were genuinely intrinsically & inseparably linked to some sort of incorporeal metaphysical existence that continues on into an 'afterlife' upon death, then it would stand to reason (at least according to Most Religious & Spiritual Ideologies) that it Could NOT Be Directly Affected or Influenced by any Known Physical Means. And yet we Repeatedly & Consistently see the Exact Opposite being the case.
We can put ourselves into temporary dreamless comas, a state of Complete LACK of Consciousness, purely for the sake of avoiding gruesome pain in operation, only to be pulled right back out; all done through Phsyical Means (via Chemical Anasthesia).
We also know for a fact that things like Personality, Feelings/Emotions, and Memories (the very things that make us who we are, that shaped us uniquely & individually into the Present Us) are Directly-Linked to Physical Neurons in our Brains. Hence why Damage, Injury, Trauma, or Disease (such as any Brain-Damage, or Alzheimer's, Amnesia, and many other things) can Literally and Permanently CHANGE A Person's Whole Identity (depending on What, and How Much, gets irreparably damaged) entirely without their choice in the matter. Even the MOST Important People, Things, and Concepts in your Life... can Easily Be Forever Lost to your Mind, IF the proper Neuronal-Cells get damaged enough.

Religion is like a species, and how do species survive? They create offspring. Indoctrination is the primary mechanism for how religion creates offspring. All modern religions encourage indoctrination of children, along with the conversion or obliteration of nonbelievers. So you have procreation (indoctrination) and eliminating competition (holy wars, suppression, inquisitions, witch hunts).
You also have the survivability of the believers. That's where group dynamics come into play. A strict division of labor and hierarchy makes a more effective workforce and army, and so religions that embodied such structure in their tenets were more successful than other religions. The Amish are quite resilient, aren't they? They also follow a strict religious dogma of xenophobia, indoctrination, and gender roles and so on.
Back to survivability, the religion that fosters hard work, self-discipline, and abstinence from drugs will result in a more robust member. If a religion instead encouraged laziness and indulgence, well those members won't prosper. The believer is also taught to defend their religion. They do this by identifying threats such as heretics. They are taught to cover their ears and eyes to heresy and temptation that would deconvert them.
Here's a curious side note: Christianity's popularity in the early days was in part due to the simple fact that farmers wouldn't have to sacrifice livestock anymore. "Our prophet sacrificed himself already to appease our god, so no more animal sacrifice!" It was a business decision. Who was it that catapulted christianity, Constantine? Yeah, maybe he was just thinking about the bottom line.
Ultimately, religion is a symbiote. Its biggest competition now is science, and oh boy is it fighting hard to survive and destroy the competition. One way to starve the symbiote is to stop the spread to children. Indoctrination deprives children the chance to make up their mind. Freedom of religion must also include freedom FROM religion, and indoctrination violates that freedom.

Ignoring the fact that he used an almost entirely-redundant term immediately after its literal-synonym... and ignoring the fact that those two terms in particular are nothing more than Constructed, Unproven (and Unprovable, thus far) human (and human-made Mathematical) Concepts...
The idea of something/someone being "Formless and abstract" but Simultaneously ALSO "Spirit, Love, totality and perfect Oneness" is rather remarkable (in the relatively 'ridiculous' & 'silly' sort of sense). Especially since it's kinda implying, by way of Comparison, either "Formless and abstract" are completely meaningless (i.e. Not being used as they are actually defined) OR that something like Love is itself Only 'Formless and abstract' (and therefore Not something Objective). I mean, IF 'God is Love' and Love is Objective, then indeed How could God/Love BE "Abstract and Formless" when the Only things we know that can be called 'Abstract' or 'Formless' are Purely Subjective and/or Relative (Non-Objective).
Well, I suppose we could instead just take that statement to be purely metaphorical and/or hyperbolic, like some kind of whimsical flowery prose that Only shines At All in its sheer overwhelming vagueness and ambiguity; as if to imply something like: the Less Sense one makes the More the Most-Sensible Truth is somehow expressed.

Promoting a kind of "Pantheism" (still a type of Theism either way, even if not an Organized variety), by way of appealing to New-Age concepts, Spirituality, and even Christian Concepts (because, of course, the Christians will be the most-likely to fall prey to believing Anything that relates to Jesus/Christ, if expressed properly, so why not just toss that in there and even go so far as to Claim/Allege that it was "Divinely-Revealed by Jesus/Holy-Spirit himself" as the Other [First] 2 Authors [Helen Schucman & William Thetford] of those Texts Claimed).
Look, it might be Far Less Detrimental, Far Less Negative, and/or Far Less Oppressive of a Religious (or Pseudo-Religious) Ideology than most forms of Christianity, and it might even have some pretty damn decent moral principles within its framework for all I know (hell, "Oneness" isn't the Worst concept by far), but I for one can't allow factors like those things alone to force me to "go easy on it" when it comes to sharing my thoughts or making a reasonable and honest review or critique of its claims and ideas.

Justifying the control of religions would certainly be helped if the true nature of many of them was exposed. The people behind many religions were identified by Plato as Sophists and in his Protagoras dialogue they are described this way:"
“Now the art of the Sophist is, as I believe, of great antiquity; but in ancient times those who practiced it, fearing this odium, veiled and disguised themselves under various names, some under that of poets, as Homer, Hesiod, and Simonides, some, of hierophants and prophets, as Orpheus and Musaeus, and some, as I observe, even under the name of gymnastic‐ masters, like Iccus of Tarentum, or the more recently celebrated Herodicus, now of Selymbria and formerly of Megara, who is a first‐rate Sophist. Your own Agathocles pretended to be a musician, but was really an eminent Sophist; also Pythocleides the Cean; and there were many others; and all of them, as I was saying, adopted these arts as veils or disguises because they were afraid of the odium which they would incur.”
These conmen employ a form of allegory that works very much like a code and it is used to conceal their true intentions. In Plato's Theaetetus, the Sophist Protagoras is even described this way:
“In the name of the Graces, what an almighty wise man Protagoras must have been! He spoke these things in a parable to the common herd, like you and me, but told the truth, his Truth, in secret to his own disciples.”
And this description is "mirrored" in the Gospel of Mark 4:32-33:
"With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything."
The supposed savior of mankind should have no reason to conceal the meaning of his words, but a conman most definitely does. This massive con can be completely exposed if people would only take the time to decipher this Sophist allegory. In this allegory, every real world idea can be represented by multiple metaphors and there is really no difference between many religions except for the metaphors they choose to embrace. This is also true of many forms of occultism and pseudoscience. The term "apocalypse" actually refers to what happens if the true meaning of this allegory is "uncovered".
In reality, I suspect the immediate short term result of such a revelation would be minimal, but if this knowledge could be made mainstream, it would certainly result in some long term changes in attitudes toward religion. I would compare it to Darwin's Theory of Evolution in it's potential to free people from their irrational beliefs.

My upbringing was very Christian, but I've broken free from the Schism and marketing plans of denominations, and right now I am an agnostic, but my favorite religions are Pantheism Hinduism, Taoism, Buddhism. These are very peaceful, and do not condemn one to hell for sinning, when everyone sins subconsciously, so as to this logic all Christians will be destined for hell, and they don't even realize it. lol I think the Bible was written by Fascists for the purpose of overall Morality in the world.
The Bible has zero credibility, really. Think about this: the scriptures claim to be over 2000 years old, and knowing what we know right now with how many versions that exist from the edited James King Version in the 17th Century, and another version in the 16th century; the books that were omitted from the Bible such as The Book Of Enoch and the book of Thomas and who knows how many more.
The Bible has has so much potential to be fabricated, and no doubt a lot of it, if not all of it was a fabrication of the actual scripture, if such scripture was ever written to begin with. That's another major question. We have arrived here in a world where everything was so uniquely designed, yet, our bodies are majorly flawed and plagued with endless degeneration and disease. There is a point to it all, I do believe, yes, and that's where my faith is, but when it comes to Mythological deity's, the likelihood is very dull.
We can't all be right, can we? The only way that would be possible is if the image of God was created in the mind with our own belief systems. In regards to the multiple religions out there, the odds of actually getting it right would actually be a low percentage.
Oh, and lets not forget, "10% of what you have belongs to God". LOL Yeah, the Bible was no doubt edited by Totalitarians. Many have sadly been programmed and controlled all of their lives. If you answer, yes, to one of these, chances are that you are still running that program:
Do you still follow the same religion as your parents/grandparents?
Do you still cheer for the same sporting teams as your parent/grandparents?
Do you still vote the same political party as your parents/grandparents?
If you answer, yes, to even one of these, chances are you are still running that program. Try and break free from this embedded program and allow your own mind to create it's own.

You take a statistic and fail to analyze because of confirmation bias. It must be a drag that you have given up your ability to question.
You see if you had questioned you would see that those countries high (typically Scandinavian countries) are extremely low on Fearons Ethnicity Fractionalization Index. For instance most Scandinavian countries are only 1/3 to 1/4 the ethnic Fractionalization of say the United States.
What this means is that there is less diversity and less diversity allows public policy, resources, etc. to focus on only one group (or only a few groups) which yields greater satisfaction by a larger amount of people. In addition many of these countries have some tremendous natural resource reserves like Norway and its oil meaning resources are plentiful. So it has very little to do (if anything to do) with being more atheistic.
What is truly sad though is these countries, to maintain their low ethnic diversity, have policies which are very discriminatory. For instance Denmark has rules that towns cannot be more than a certain percentage of foreign born people, they also have rules that you must speak their language, etc. (at least last I checked).
So you’ve selected countries that in a different time would have policies consistent with Nazi germany as they focus on their core race and nationality. Those are the countries you are holding up as ideal. That is sad of you.
