Nice work Dave. That really looks great. I also do that close up work without my glasses. 😂 In bonsai there are benefits of being near sighted. Thanks, keep growing

Great walk through/talk through, Dave. All one needs to know about picking out and starting a bonsai from nursery stock. I’m really digggin where you took your tree.

Great video Dave! I also posted a video tonight on the same tree, and I talked about a lot of the same things you did lol. Great minds think alike.

Hopefully these junipers do well for you, I'm looking forward to keeping track of their progress.
I've had one for 4 or 5 years now where I put it in the ground to thicken. It has since thickened nicely but by the looks of it the branches just keep growing out in all directions and I have gotten leggy with virtually no backbudding whatsoever. Oh and I get dieback on mine (not just interior growth which is typical for junipers, but large sections of branches) even though it's in nearly full sun, but it probably doesn't help having it planted in hard clay soil (landscape)
Good luck with yours, maybe seeing yours in the future will convince me to dig mine and put in bonsai soil.

Great work . I see these at all the nurseries over here. What also caught my eye was a colorado blue spruce called spring gold. It has a nice butter yellow on the new growth in spring. Have u ever seen a bonsai made out of this variety?

Great video Dave. I've got a couple of those Blue Stars growing in a large pot and wasn't sure if they were even worth the effort of trying to bonsai but I like what you did with this one. Question for you on tying across the root ball as I find tying down young plants without a developed root mass really challenging. I see what you did on the top side to go corner to corner but did you also cross the wires on the bottom (i.e. were you tightening both ends of the same wire)?

Hi, i just got a blue start bonsai and I just try to find information about it, my main concern is the harsh winter we have in Saskatchewan,
Do you have any tips about this specific bonsai? Thank you and great video

Junipers in general can have root temperatures as low as 0. So if it’s protected from wind and sun in the winter, it could be hunkered low into the ground under mulch and then snow around its pot. It should be fine. Or just keep it in a garage as long as it’s not heated. Let it freeze.

could you propagate any of the limbs you took off?
I just purchase 3 but had no idea what I was gonna do with them. Know I will take one of the trees and follow your direction. Thanks.

I have only propagated shimpaku junipers. I’m guessing you should be able to. I waited a while for roots to form. I waited two full years before even touching the cuttings .

any reason to repot before prunning ?

Depends on the tree. This juniper has branching that can be easily damaged while working so I wanted it solid in the pot first.
