I'm 6'0 195 surfing in Oahu, but the mid size stuff, usually don't surf if it's over 6 feet. I've been having a hard time getting my dims figured out. Very helpful!!
Excellent info and commentary, I agree with you. The other factor other then weight/volume ratio, is age and ability. I am finding that has I get older, more foam is my friend for paddling. I'm consistently trying to balance the board that rips while is still a good paddler too. Thanks Brah!
Thanks for the info and breakdown of your board set up. I weigh 190 and have had similar problems surfing with boards that didn't have enough volume. Your observation on the rocker effecting bottom turns made sense, never thought of that.
VERY useful intel! I’m 6’3” and 222 but cutting weight to 210, maybe 205 depending on how I look/feel. I generally can’t depend on stock dims and need to tweak things so I don’t end up on a shortboard that’s 6’8” to get the required liters.
Totally agree, wish I new about volume 10 years ago, would have saved me sum cash. All my boards now are from lost, v3, short round and the qkiller, best shapes for varying surf here in nz. Amazing how slight Tweeks change a surf into a great surf, cheers for a great video
I agree with everything you said. 100%. Im 6ft 200lbs and I can't stand it when shapers put kick out the tail. I use a 1/2 traction pad, I always go thicker and knife down the rails. Dead on. Thanks for the video.
Great video. I am also a bigger guy (6'1" and 210#) with intermediate skills (by my scale - advanced by the Surf Coaches scale); I have found the same things for my short board selections: Wider, flatter tails are great. I also love my boards with thinned out rails. Great video as there are so few decent videos to help a bigger guy pick boards. Keep up the good work!
Nice vid, Love your board. I'm a bigger dude using a 6'2" as well but my board is much thinner and dies out on waves that don't have that extra push, but yours looks legit.
I just got a new board very similar to yours, maybe 1 or 2 inches bigger. However I am 5'7 tall, 147 lb and intermediate and athletic. I needed something that could get me into the waves faster. My friends and shaper thought this was the right board
Thanks for the video... whilst I'm not in the category of a "bigger guy" (riding shortboards)... the information & views were very interesting & helpful. Keep it up!
I’m 6’3”. I weight 230 (mini beer/food belly but good muscle & cardio workout foundation beneath). I used to be advanced but I took time off so now I’m (temporarily) intermediate again. Die-hard SHORTBOARDER only. Age 47. Size 14 feet 🦶. Live in NW San Diego county and surf 🏄 2-8 foot faces. Did not grow up thinking in terms of liters/volume so any BROfessional advice would be so appreciated as far as what my magic # is. I’m thinking 45? I would rather have a little too much than too little to assist with paddling & keeping wave count up. I like to do hard turns, slashing, lippers, floaters, roundhouses, occasional 360’s once I get my surf legs back. Oh! And oddly, I use a full deck patch traction system (Astrodeck) instead of wax.
I too weigh 230lbs 47years old 6ft 3 fitness and strength above average but surf once a month over the past 30years , when away on holidays , UK waves which mostly aren't perfect . My favortite board volume is close to 45lts ,, 6ft6 22 with 2/78 thick option model from Matt Adams Newquay Cornwall.
6’5 here. 225. Just got a 6’3 lost carbon wrap 2.75” thick 21” wide and I’m having a hard time catching waves. I’ve surfed 5’11-6’ retro fishes in the past and never had an issue. The volume on this board is 39. You think I’m just too heavy for it?
I'm really interested in volume calculations, you said the old one is 29L, which seems extremely low for a guy of your size. on the firewire calculator i entered advanced, above average fitness, 35 yrs old, and 205lbs (I estimated your specs) and it brought up 34-41L depending on waves. What is the volume on the new board and why do you ride that volume?
C Robb Worthington Mo'e def does ride boards that are a little lower in volume (this is brent writing BTW) but I am pretty sure that the the new board is around 35L, and that is the board he uses in waves under head hi, or when it is a little hi tide and fat...I cant speak for him about why he picked that exact volume, but keep in mind that how the volume is distributed throughout the board makes a huge impact, as well as the rocker in the board...a high volume board with low rocker is going to ride much differently than one with lots of rocker etc....at a certain point, you have to start experimenting and working with a shaper to dial in all the little variables of a board
Im 38 6 foot 250lbs(not in great shape but I can still do 15-20 pushups before getting winded and I do 10-15 propups on dry land a day when I'm not out on the ocean)....I'm wide/big and feel like I'll never be able to use a shortboard
What is the width at the widest point on this board? You never specified. Does height really matter? I would think only weight matters. Also what board are you on now with the added weight? I'm 6'3 200lbs and am looking for a shortboard. Big fan of the show.
damanizyo ditto to that. My height and weight are around the same and keen to learn what volume and dimensions you're riding at 225-230... i'm thinking a fast breaking wave pitching over shallow reef so keen to be able to get quickly and knife in..so also keen to hear what you use for a step up board. cheers hope to hear back soon.
I have a 6'6 al merrick epoxy. I can paddle out just fine but, my problem is balance. I can do the pop up it's just I always fall off. I'm 14 5,8 and 124lbs any recommendations?
steelers796 Stay compressed, make sure your feet are centered over the stringer, keep your hands on the board through the pop up until your front foot is solid. Make sure your eyes are looking where you are going and not watching your feet.
Im a vacation surfer and im thinking on getting aboard, i thought on a 6'5 with ~ 34 - 35 volume. Im 1,85 m and weight 75 kg, do u think the board is too big and heavy? Nice vid!
TheGustavokanto that sounds like a good amount of volume for your size...what size waves are you surfing? and what level are you? out the back..in the white water?
TheGustavokanto Check out this link. It can help choose board volume. Be conservative with your skill level and this tool can be super helpful! www.firewiresurfboards.com/surfboards_volume_calc.php
I have a foam board and can pop up and ride the wave well. What kind of board should I go to? A guy in a surf shop told me to go to a fiberglass fun board with a much wider nose then tail. Should I do that?
evbulock sounds like the guy at the shop is right....foam boards are typically really thick and have lots of volume, so if you switch to a fiberglass board, the extra width in the nose and tail will help add stability and make it easier to catch waves...let us know what board you get!
hi! i'm a beginner intimidate surfer and i'm looking for my first board :D i'm 1,59 m and weight 39 kilo's and i turnded just 15 years old, on my local surf school i tried a bic 7.6 mini mal, but that board is really heavy to carry for me, a oakly 7.6 good light board but a little harder to turn becouse its a little thicker. on the webshop of the surfshop in a city near to my town i found a torq fun board in the sizes 6.8 7.2 and 7.6, are they good boards for my level? and wich one would i choose? the dimensions: 6’8” x 21” x 2 3/4”, 7’2” x 21 1/4” x 2 3/4”, 7’6” x 21 1/2” x 2 7/8” ps nice chanel i look al your vids :p And sorry for my bad grammar i'm dutch and not so good in that xD
Hey. Great video Im 195lbs. So im 89 kilogram.sorry my inglish. My board is wirrdo ripper.36 liter 6.1 Im very good surfer.to much tail rocker in my wirrdo .but im doing cutbacks. Snaps.even airs. Good review! I'm 195lbs and going from a 30l board to 40l was a game changer! I can actually surf now!

so its 28,4 L. What do you think?
I'm that exact same size and my board is 30.5 litres and very simular dims and it goes alright for me
What's the max weight limit for surfing. Right now I'm at 221.8Lbs.
there is no weight limit
I don't know if this helps but I am 12 and weigh about 78 pounds and I am 4'8"

Costa Rica respeto pura vida
I have a 6 foot foam board
I can also paddle fine
evbulock if paddling is not an issue and you can get out through waves fine and catch waves, then look at maybe a smaller fiberglass board than your foamie...ie...if you were on an 8' foamie, you could look at boards in the 7'6" range that are fiberglass...i still recommend renting a few fiberglass boards and trying them out in different sizes before you buy something
Boards are wider these days.16 inch tails 203/4 in middle
ill take it! [175 lb.s]
