This is normal. A huge amount of the sealed starters from Alpha, Beta and Unlimited stayed sealed because the first decks opened in the box had no rares. Otherwise the temptation is too great and they would have been opened 20 years ago. This is especially true for Beta, which was the hottest set in 95 when you had to play with clear back sleeves so Alpha was considered a novelty like Collectiors Edition.
Yep, this is the opposite of a "God Box" (where somehow the rare sheet got placed in the boosters as if it was a common sheet). The early Magic boxes are highly speculative for that reason, sometimes the sheets got shuffled at the factory, and you got very lucky (or very unlucky). Good advice about not buying a sealed pack unless you know what box it came from. Chances are, it was from one of these unlucky boxes that had commons/uncommons where the rares should have been, so somebody is trying to unload a worthless pack that they know has no rares. IIRC, the distribution in a booster pack of 15 cards, is supposed to be 3 uncommon, 1 rare, 11 common.
Buying the bottom row out of a newly opened box back then was awesome. Well until iceage it seemed like the boxes were stacked.
Is that why inquest listed beta versions being more expensive than alpha versions?
@@mapsgoonthewall5396 no, this was because back in 94/95, you couldn't play with sleeves in tournaments and then you were allowed to play with clear-back sleeves. Alphas thus were not tournament legal unless you had an all Alpha deck.

Until today i can still named the card title only by looking at the illustration, no need to read the title on the left corner : Gloom, CoP White, Fog, Grizzly Bears, Hurloon Minotaur, Serra Angel, Mesa Pegasus, Disintegration, Samite Healer, Creature Bond, Spell Blast, Holy Armor, Drain Life.
It was MtG on its heyday.

When i was a kid, i remember getting a pack just like this one with a friend. I remember looking at the cards and trading. I remember the smell. Eventually i threw many of them away. Some years later i found some of them lying around, so i threw them out in the trash. Who knows, maybe i had a Black Lotus and just ditched it. meeh, thats a flower, fuck that one.

I live in the downtown core of a city. I’m going to pretend from now on that all those rubber gloves I see tossed on the ground in the morning are because of game card collectors haunting the night, searching for a Black Lotus, and hoping their cards aren’t in sheet order.

That was such an Epic opening. I felt so bad that the "rare" I turned over ended up like that. I just could not flip over the 2nd one after that.
Open Boosters gave me the box and the instructions. I had him sign both and I even kept the blue gloves. If somebody ever discovers that box someday they are going to be pretty confused as to why blue rubber gloves are stuffed in a signed box.

Brings back memories of opening revised boosters and getting a basic land as your rare card. It was always a bit of a joke getting the 'rarest land' but that was when boosters were around $4 so it wasnt quite so bad.
Most boosters (atleast at my lgs other than modern sets) are 4 bucks still

In 2005 I opened two sealed Alpha starter decks. In one of the starters one of the cards in the rare spot was a Island. Apparently that was a known phenomenon that occurred in Alpha at times. My hands shake like this dudes on rare occasions when I get really anxious. If anyone remembers the seller on eBay with the user id strictly-magic, that was me.

That echo tho... The acoustics in this room are fuckin' awesome.
That guy probably did so much damage between the spitting during his sound effects, the quick flipping of the cards while his hands are constantly jittering, and sticking that knife right into the deck when he cut the pack open.
You go through the trouble of even wearing gloves--only to probably do even more damage than clean bare hands and 2 seconds of thought and care.
Do all pack fresh Betas make that "kwtcshhh" sound, or just the starter decks?
Only alpha and beta, BUT, there are some later starter decks that do it also... it seems like you know you have a good deck when you get one like that.... in beta and alpha though, since all of them do it, it’s not a good indicator of a “good” pack...

The pack was a factory error. After the cards get cut off a full sheet, common, uncommons and rares are stacked and combined before being wrapped and loaded into the boxes. The sorter hickupped and picked up commons from two different sheets and obviously two extra commons instead of the two rares. Might have happened a few times too till someone on the production line noticed the error.

Actually, us magic card nerds grew up in a world where MTG was the only tcg.. YuGiOh didn't become a thing until way later and was for the little kids, so what you described is what a newer generation player would say to poke fun not realizing how dumb you sound.

Everytime I watch these videos I cry a bit. I used to play when MTG was new and I had tons of rare cards, but I didn't know it at the time. I found some rather rare cards just lying bent in a box recently.

Brings back memories of getting the weekly allowance and running to book store after school to pick few packs up, and often open them at the store , cause could not wait to get back home.. And then i gave all my cards away for free to get away from bad habits of spending.....

Man I collected 1000s of cards from the earliest days. I stopped playing when I was 17 and sold all of my cards bulk cheap to build a skateboard. Everyone I played with stopped playing. My dad’s friend worked at a place where they printed the cards around the time they started releasing holos and he would bring me tons of great cards. I think I sold them for around $150 and the value on that stuff today is through the roof. It is something I will always regret...
I sold my entire early collection in 1997 to buy a skateboard too!
My friends and I would go to card shows and split cases of packs. I had so many cards, I ran out of shoeboxes, and started just putting commons and lands in big trash bags. Between several moves in the late 90's through mid 2000's, and having all my friends stop playing, my collection evaporated. I sold most of the cards bulk, and some lucky punk ripped off my binder of foils and rares. They were good days, and I miss them sometimes, but I will never go back.
What would be the value now?
