The movie is one of my faves. Drifts in and out of my top 5. It has flaws but i love the viking culture so much and it does plenty of things well that i just enjoy watching it.
When I was like 18 I got my own place and I'll I had was a T.V. and a DVD player on the floor, no cable tv, no furniture, but I had like 5 movies that I would just let play over and over while I sat on the floor playing guitar or reading. 13th Warrior, Last Samurai and The Butterfly Effect for months on end lol.
When I read where the movie the 13th warrior came from, I found the audiobook to listen to whilst working night shift as a welder, loved both versions of the story. I agree, I love the fish outta water cultural stories as well. Great review. Thanks, Mike.
I found myself looking at maps of the area and tracking their journey... couldn't track all of it, but it was fun. Seeing a different culture through the eyes of another one made it very interesting. Still on the read a long!
Eaters of the Dead has been my favorite Crichton book thus far in the read along. I tend to really like the “found footage” formate for books. Really enjoyed the movie as well. Turned out it was a favorite from my husband’s childhood so he actually watched it with me ha ha

I will revisit this movie, because I didn't like the movie but I reread the book numerous times. It was enough history to satisfy me, as I'm a history buff. It is intriguing because although it is a novel, the historical manuscript, which was written by Ibn Fadlan is registered in the library of congress.
If anyone wants a very interesting read, look up the autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini. Born in Italy in the year 1500, he wrote a first person account of his life. It is a fascinating book that I came across years ago. It is translated from Italian, but it isn't hard to grasp.
I'm a big fan of the movie so picked up the book. It's a very interesting read and style, and the movie was quite faithful to it. The fact that it's partly inspired by a real man's adventures is fantastic. I love this book and movie for a bunch of reasons, but primarily because It's rare to see a positive Muslim character in mainstream books/movies, let alone the main character. For that, I'll be forever grateful to the legendary Michael Crichton. My only gripe with his character choices for Ibn Fadlan is in maybe 3-4 spots where he writes that something is allowed in Islam by the characters logic, when it is very clearly not and breaks the immersion for me (eg drinking mead, sex outside marriage, partaking in the vikings ritual murder and adultery!?). Ibn Fadlan never did (or admitted to doing) any of these things. If he did, he'd be admitting publicly to commiting what's considered major or significant sins. Aside from that, I loved the book and finished it in a few days.
I loved the book. I found that whole idea of being disturbed by another culture, but then coming to respect it was really cool. I enjoyed the movie also.
I just loved that they used Norwegian actors. The book was not as "entertaining" but the movie certain made me want to read the book. I enjoyed them both, but I will definitely rewatch the movie more than I will reread the book.
I love Crichton's version of parts of Beowulf and the movie is a great adaptation. "Lo, There do I see my Father Lo, There do I see my Mother and My Brothers and my Sisters Lo, There do I see the line of my people back to the begining Lo, They do call to me They bid me take my place among them in the halls of Valhalla Where thine enemies have been vanquished Where the brave shall live Forever..."

A genuinely good movie, scary, with great action, humor in the right places , characters you feel for, and a beautiful score. I have only read Jurassic Park 1 and 2 as a kid. Thinking about trying something else by Chrichton, and leaning against Congo at the moment. Is that a good starting point, or would you suggest another book?
I feel like you should have read “Travels” prior to doing this reread. it adds a lot of color as to how Michael Crichton experiences shaped his novels…

Hey dude, enjoy Saga book 1 on me. The series is on hiatus but they are supposed to be starting back up soon. That series is like star wars on shrooms :) Oh and I'm so happy you are tackling Berserk. I got into that one from the old school Anime back in my university years and it is still going strong. Such a bummer Kentaro Miura passed at such an early age :( And Mead disgusting?
Read the book and really enjoyed it. I remember seeing the movie when it came out in theaters and really enjoying that as well, so I guess I am one of the few. It has remained a favorite over the years, one that I bring out periodically just to watch again. (Sorry, I read ahead also, I've finished Congo (movie was so-so) and Sphere (movie was good, but left a lot of the book out that would have explained more of what was happening) and am moving on to Jurassic Park - another movie I saw in the theaters and loved.)
Seems pretty cool. But now I am hyped for E3 so I am mostly on videogames now. And some mangas but they are fast reads. Hellsing and berserk deluxes dropping soon.

Women helping lead society and having widespread rights by law centuries before western civilizations. Anything negative is of cultural corruption/influence, not religious. Versus women seemed nore like objects and property to vikings.

I enjoyed the movie quite a bit. The scene where the director demonstrated Antonio Banderas learning the norse tongue was amazing. So well done.

Even though a lot of people don't even know about it everyone I know that watched The 13th Warrior loved it.
