why do you mix it in with the soil. that is a lot of work and if you just leave it on top of the soil you have the same function.
It's not quite like that. Fertilizer must be mixed into the soil in order for it to be properly absorbed. If it were left on the surface, it would dry out too much on warm sunny days and lose its function.
