"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
Fun Fact: Several decades after the film's release, Lee Fierro, who played Mrs. Kintner, walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed "Alex Kintner Sandwich" on the menu. She commented that she had played his mother so many years ago; the owner of the restaurant ran out to meet her, and he was none other than Jeffrey Voorhees, who had played her son. They had not seen each other since the original movie shoot. I'm told Jeff still owns the restaurant at Martha's Vineyard and he loves talking to fans.
Lost Attraction Fact: Quint's boathouse set was built in Martha's Vineyard on an abandoned lot. The city council made the production crew sign an agreement to demolish it after filming and replace everything exactly as it had been, right down to the litter.
Writing Ensemble Fact: Quint's tale of the USS Indianapolis was conceived by playwright Howard Sackler, lengthened by screenwriter John Milius and rewritten by Robert Shaw following a disagreement between screenwriters Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb. Shaw presented his text, and Benchley and Gottlieb agreed that this was exactly what was needed. It's wildly considered the best scene of the movie.

Jeff Vorhees grew up in my neighborhood in Connecticut. He was a few years older than me but I played baseball with his younger brother and even though Jeff was older everybody knew everyone in the neighborhood. They moved to Martha's Vineyard just in time for him to get the opportunity to be cast as Alex Kintner and his brother was one of the kids running out of the water after the attack. When I was a kid and saw Jaws in the theater I was able to pick his brother out of the crowd but now after all the years that have passed I can't do it anymore.

The USS Indianapolis is in our history books. Quint's story is exaggerated on the number of deaths all being shark related. He is an interesting character driven by PTSD. No doubt shark hunting is his way of handling the memory with payback.
Chief Brody's constant need to call on the radio for help was frustrating Quint. Quint had already survived the Indianapolis without a radio, so he felt confident enough to smash that one. He wasn't going to let any help come in and steal away his latest shark conquest. Besides that, if word gets around that a prolific shark hunter had to call for help - his shark hunting business would suffer.
One of my favorite scenes is when Jaws goes under with 3 barrels and Quint realizes for the first time that he is in over his head.

Yes, the USS Indianapolis mission was secret. Many sailors couldn't/wouldn't say what they were doing and their family only knew that they were on the Indianapolis. When their kids saw the movie, they would come home and let their dad's know that the Indianapolis was in the movie and it opened a lot of Father's eyes. There's a few good books about it.

    • @AndrewGivens
      @AndrewGivens Рік тому

Quint's only a sailor, not an officer, so his story checks out from his PoV. But there's a glitch in it: Indy had completed her transport run and was actually transferring to a new formation, using a behind-the-lines route, thought to to be relatively safe. So that particular transit was not a secret and was in fact totally mundane - hence a big part of the problem. Transferring between commands meant, to an extent, transferring between communication hierarchies. And that means she slipped between the cracks, as it were. Logged off of one command, not yet logged into the next one when she went down. So no-one was looking out for her.
Something similar caused the slaughter off Savo in late summer 42, when a recon unit communicating through one command structure sighted the Japanese force which would, hours later, attack forces under a different theatre command structure, so the report never got to the men who needed to know.
Basic human errors and flaws; the mundanity of it all makes it even more tragic.

Water will change the trajectory of the bullet, it will also slow it down. Plus I don't think that little 38 would even phase the shark.
Stabbing might work, but great white sharks can have skin up to 6" think. So you would need a very long blade on a knife to get to any vital organs.

Sharks in movies and tv shows were these dolphin sized fish an it surprised a lot of people to know that 12' 0r 15' Great Whites were common and fishermen and surfers reported seeing 20' long ones. So the shark in the movie being 25' in length could be believed.

The barriers on the beach are sand gates. They help knock the sand down when the wind catches it. You have to take into account that it was a different time back then. We know tons more about sharks, thanks in part to the mania driven by this movie. People were less exposed to things. You made the point...How is that line going to hold a shark. How could a shark be a danger if you're in a boat. Once people see that a fish can attack and sink a boat, they have a new perspective. Little things like when Quint crushes the beer can and Hooper responds by crushing the cup. Cute, but big whoop, right? The full effect is lost because nobody today realizes beer cans, back then, were steel, not aluminum. It took considerably more grunt to crush one single-handed. Also, a handgun wouldn't stop a shark that size, maybe an elephant rifle, but who has one of those, especially on the east coast then, or even now? Also, a shark that size wouldn't care if Mike Tyson, in his prime, punched his nose.

    2. Boy Scouts don't need to do the mile swim to get their Merit badge. It's an accomplishment all its own.
    3. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kentner actually slapped Roy Scheider. It took 17 takes. Once was so hard it knocked his glasses off.
    4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in on purpose by Spielberg because they were having problems with the shark "Bruce" and his appearance was delayed, and the movie needed something earlier. Works every time.🤣🤣
    5. IRL Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't get along, so Spielberg used the animosity to fuel their feud onscreen.
    6. The boy that said, "He made me do it' is now the Police Chief of the town where this movie was filmed.
    7. Hooper was right. The fish that hit the line was a game fish.
    8. "You're gonna need a bigger boat" is one of the greatest adlibs in history. It was the first time Roy actually saw Bruce. It was an ongoing trope within the filming due to budgetary problems.
    9. Goof: An animal that large couldn't hit the side of the boat as rapidly as it did UNDER WATER.
    10. I suspect Quint's story about the Indy gave him PTSD flashbacks and contributed to his behavior after he told the story.
    11. I was in the Navy, and we were instructed to go for the eyes when confronting a shark.
    12. Aside from the pool used in the Ben Gardner boat scenes, all of the shipboard scenes were filmed entirely at sea,
    13. In the book not only does Hooper die but he was also having an affair with Mrs. Brody.
    14. JAWS II is the only other one worth watching. It revolves around the Brody kids and their friends. Including one of the mayors' kids.

And good old Ben claims another victim. That jump scare rarely fails. even decades later.
Not that you are still reading comments after this much time, but the reason for the barrel, and for letting a fish pull out the line and reel in it in a bit over and over, is to tire it out. A small fish, say a few pounds is too weak to fight a full grown human but even they can break a line. So you let them tire themselves out until the "fight" is gone and you pull them in.
The reason they don't shoot it with a spear gun is pretty much the same reason you wouldn't hunt a bear with a pocket knife, IF you got through the hide/skin can drew blood at best you'd piss it off. You wouldn't be likely you kill it unless you got VERY lucky.
Yes the story of the WWII boat is real. You also need to consider the era, yes they could put a radio tracker on it... but they were hardly like modern GPS, you would have a heck of a time tracking in and it probably only worked in a meter of water, any lower and the signal would be too weak.
Yep, the villain in this movie isn't the shark, it's the mayor.

You kind of answered your own question. That shark is so powerful that the line/wire he was using would not be able to 'muscle' that shark in all at once, therefore reels have a 'drag' mechanism that lets out line as the force the shark is exerting nears the line's breaking point.
And then factors like wire doesn't stretch so it snaps easier while monofilament line does stretch which helps absorb energy.

The shark was too big, you can't just kill it with one harpoon. The purpose of the barrels is to tire the shark out and finally to immobilize it. A shark has to constantly swim to breathe. It has to keep water flowing over it's gills. If it stops, it drowns. That's what the barrels are for.
