  • This video describes how a sound can be split into two parts. Understanding both of these parts of sound is essential for you to hear in different listening situations.
Being able to understand sound enables us to replicate it precisely so that we can offer superior hearing performance to our hearing implant users.

    Why is it distorted?

    • @medel

Hi Michael, the "distortion" is caused because of the combination of fine structure and envelope of sounds. It shows the difference between musical and speech sounds (and the prominence of each of the elements in these specific types of sound).

Hi Sebastian, yes, in the visualization here the red waves are representing the fine structure.

Alright, seems simple enough. But how is this useful ?

This is useful for trying to understand the brain mechanisms underlying rhythm perception (in music vs speech) for example, many experiments have used this decomposition. Also, think of cochlear implants, they would work well if they simply focused on the sound envelope, but one would not be able to listen to music or more sophisticated sounds, and voices would not be as beautiful. So it's necessary to make integrate both processes for the best CI.

to me, cochlear implant user of this brand, it is important to understand concepts about sound composition. I am eager to hear better, and when I get Calibration sessions at my Audi´s, it comes handy to understand more, and to understand what she/he can offer as available.
