I understand your point, but that doesn't excuse Dazai’s abuse to Akutagawa, even if it is normal for the mafia, they should understand that its the mafia but they should also understand that Dazai was still wrong for his actions /nm /gen
It should definitely be expected, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't react at all. Abuse is still a repulsive thing to do to someone no matter the circumstance-- it's only natural that you'd be horrified upon finding that someone you thought was a good person has done something so disturbing.
I just love how people see Dazai abusing Akutagawa, and they're instantly like, "omg poor baby!" but no matter how much Dazai has suffered, or tries to make himself better, he's always seen as cruel and heartless. Dazai isn't cruel and heartless; he's a realistic person. Do you really expect him to break down years of trauma during the 30 minutes they had to prevent Yokohoma from blowing up? Or do you expect him to play nice (which he has tried, and these "fans" would know if they read the series) when his opponents are not going to understand? In war misplaced humanity always kills you. It shows how little these fans' reading comprehension really is. They are unable to understand the existence of an imperfect victim, a guilty man, to them anyone who has committed the slightest crime is no longer a human, but somehow that only applies to Dazai, because they love Akutagawa. Sorry for the rant, It's just seeing the character's reactions really fired me up. I know the youtuber does not have such views, and I'm not criticizing them; I'm critizing fans who mischaracterize Dazai to the point he is a completely different person.
I know right? Akutagawa is my favorite character, but I can't say that he's a pure angel either. When I first got into BSD, I hated Dazai's guts for what he did to him, but then I realized how stupid my logic was. I think I only resented him because he got out of the mafia and Akutagawa did not. BSD is full of gray characters, none can be put in a pure black and white spectrum. I will always like BSD because of that.
Finally, someone who realizes that Dazai is neither a saint nor a devil, he has made serious but serious “mistakes”, but at least he tries to change. If people haven’t see the ability of Dazai literally explains how the character is…he is the dehumanization of what bad people can be but at the same time how people can change to something better, even the way he acts in the manga/anime that some people dislike is part of his mask, his jokes everything he does is a defense mechanism so they can’t see how much he suffers and to hide everything that happened to him and all the regrets he have. Much of the fans of BSD don’t realize how deep the characters are and they don’t understand that they don’t have to be on sides of who is the worst or who is the best character, what they are doing is idealizing an action/thing they do and that’s not the point of the anime/manga Thanks to anyone who reads this comment.

The thing I love about BSD is how deep all the characters are. They're all intellectually, morally and emotionally complex so it makes it hard to not connect with all of them at least a bit. Great reaction (and props on you not having a whole section dedicated to Chuuya, as much as I love him)
It's good to see that Kiyotaka able to point out about who start the cycle first since he's the smartest alongside dazai in the room so he could figure it out better than most people in the room I also like when you make kiyotaka looks away at the ending when Deadpool said "it's like a series of happy endings" to show that he long for the freedom and happy endings he desired Overall, i love the depths of these reactions And these reactions come at the times when i need them so thanks
Just to clarify some things, it was actually in Dazai's goal to train Akutagawa in that way, not because it was the only way he knew how to train. Dazai's training was excessively harsh, even by mafia standard, and it's evident that Akutagawa could have survived without Dazai's training because of his time in the slums, so survival in the mafia was not Dazai's actual goal in training Akutagawa, but rather shaping him into a weapon by his own ideologies at the time. He consistently broke Akutagwa down physically and psychologically to try and remove all weakness from him, essentially to make him into a weapon, which was dehumanizing in general. More over, he wanted Akutagawa to become obsessed with his approval, otherwise he wouldnt have withheld his validation. However, after leaving the port mafia, some of Dazai philosphies had changed(no, he himself did not change, but he viewed some things differently. He's still rather morally gray and all that) and he began to understand the importance of restraint and cooperation instead of killing needlessly, which is evident in how he mentors Atsushi, and why he now only gives Akutagawa his acknowledgement when Akutagawa shows restraint and cooperation. For further proof of this, dazai, in "Osamu dazai and the dark era," tells Oda that Akutagawa has the POTENTIAL to be the strongest ability user in the port mafia, which directly shows his motivations for training Akutagawa; he was looking to mold him into a weapon. now, for Akutagawa's abuse of Kyouka, for some reason people think he was physically abusing her despite the fact that it was not explicitly shown, but Akutagawa abused her psychologically rather than physically. One, he himself did not train Kyouka, he was just an authoritative figure that she usually saw in the mafia. He was the one that issued commands and evaluated her performance, which is why he saw her as a tool for the mafia. Later however, he is able to see that she becomes stronger and reaches more of her potential in the detective agency, which is why he finally acknowledges her as her own person in Dead Apple. Because of this, he begins to question his own ideologies and notices flaws in it because of Kyouka's newfound strength, much similar to how Dazai realized some flaws in his philosophies. Sorry for yapping, I'm actually crazy about Akutagawa and Dazai lore so I like to deep dive into them in comment sections >_< Also it's not my intention to water down the fact that Akutagawa did in fact psychologically abuse Kyouka, but its in my ability to say that he did not think of it in that way. He was messed up because of Dazai's training and because of the fact that he himself is dehumanized, he reflects that in his relationships, including with Atsushi. He often views Atushsi as a living symbol of his weaknesses because of the fact that Dazai Acknowledges atsushi and not him, which is why he was often harsh on Atsushi.
