because a lot of time in restaurant people will get their meal plus alcohol (bottle of wine, aperitive, digestive, etc.). instead of just paying exactly what you order people often just divide equally since usually the difference between what you have to pay and the mean isn't that big. It's also easier for the waiter/waitress. Normally, people ask at the end of the meal: "should we split equally?" And if someone doesn't want to it's no big deal.
Lord James I have friends and we always pay for what we eat because we're in different financial situations. If I ate more than my friend I'd feel awful for splitting it equal so they'd end up paying more than they should. Same when I eat less I don't want to pay for something I never ate.
The Roach Den And I always know which of my friends can or can't afford a certain restaurant. So we do not end up eating dishes with a huge price difference and amount. If I want to take the friends who can't afford an expensive food to an expensive place I would pay for then. Easy!

@@kktan3153 in Ross defense, this is not the first time that they are going out to a restaurant and I'm kinda sure from Ross' character that at the first and second time he'd be the one to ask whether everyone's fine with splitting the bill and the others probably shrugged it off and said "yeah its fine" Therefore for him saying that he thought its not an issue: he cant read minds, the others didnt say anything Yes they are good friends and Ross should have noticed that they were uncomfortable with it: some just dont notice that due to circumstances. And you cant say that Ross isnt caring, he definitely is. A lot of problems in society happen when people expect others to read their mind.
@@xxMpEGxx yup... That's why I used the word 'insensitive. We can't read mind, that's exactly why we need to be sensitive in things that we say, no? @@kktan3153 I think he's not insensitive either because its not the first time theyre eating out It would have been insensitive if he never asked whether splitting the bill is ok, but again I'm convinced that he probably has in the past in the beginning and they didnt say anything But at this point its speculation and I have no evidence
It's different when you have to shell out cash. When I had my own place I don't mind if my friends come over and make themselves at home, eat whatever they want. I don't really feel the impact on the budget I put in for groceries. When it comes to shelling out cash for a dinner that's as expensive as a whole week's grocery, that's when it starts to feel expensive.
Dijean Tillman rachel’s family is loaded considering in other episodes where her sisters jill and amy appear, it’s obvious that they’re spoiled. Jill even gave her friend a yacht for her birthday using her dad’s credit card.

@@darkmagician2521 I’m always expected to pay for the entire dinner… tho I can afford it , it does get a bit annoying I learned to just not go out to nice places with my friends who can’t afford it
For those who don't know, this was a reference to the fact that the cast didn't earn the same amount of money per episode at the beginning. With time, they "assembled" and decided to earn the same together, which was rarity back then.
@@breatherevolution6605 I think i remember reading back in the day that it was David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston who got more and it was based on that the show was to be built around them (like it kinda is) but they demanded that everyone should get equal pay. So the total bill is $168, and if I had to guess what everyone owes (considering Ross, Monica and Chandler also appear to have wine and the rest have water): Ross: $48 Monica: $48 Chandler: $38 Rachel: $8 Phoebe: $10 Joey: $16 So for the original proposition of $28 each, Ross and Monica are probably saving at least $20 each, Chandler is probably saving about $10, and the rest owe two to three times as much for their food is worth. I don't know about you, but I think I would be quite offended if someone proposed that as if it were fair.
Don't forget that this was season 2, which was aired at about 1995-1996. Due to the inflation rate over the years, $100 then is about $170 now. And here I thought it was already expensive enough
I honestly wonder how Chandler, Monica, and Ross didn’t notice red flags 🚩 1. They got full meals, while Rachel, Phoebe, and Joey got miniature little appetizers 2. Rachel, Phoebe, and Joey are eating the bread sticks because they’re no where near full 3. Chandler, Monica, and Ross ordered wine while Rachel Phoebe and Joey ordered water 3: Chandler Monica and Ross got dessert while Rachel, Phoebe and Joey didn’t order dessert. How come those three didn’t notice any of this?!
I'm quite late to reply, but maybe they thought that Joey, Phoebe & Rachel aren't that hungry perhaps? Even so, as friends they should have asked as to why are they ordering basic appetizers instead of main course meals.
I absolutely love this show and do love this episode but in the context of the entirety of the show… this is the only time they ever really care about spending each others money. Racheal, Phoebe, and Joey live off the other’s generosity and the fact they have a problem now with chipping in honestly would feel offensive. Do you realize for the first couple seasons Joey and Rachael didn’t have any money and relied on the others and now that they have finally gotten some money they don’t feel like contributing.
True, I'm in the position of unfortunate three and my friends notice that I mostly order just a small dessert when they have full meals. They offer to buy me a meal but that's just taking advantage of them. They have enough to eat out every day and still have a lot left to save up while I don't go out every day and still got little to nothing saved up. I'm glad that they understand my situation.
Honestly I dont know why Monica didn’t pay... As the hostess for bringing them out, and the fact that they’re celebrating her pay raise it seems like she should pay. Kinda like “I got a raise, drinks on me”...
Never understood why someone celebrating something shouldnt pay for stuff. Where im from you would be considered a jerk if you had a celebratory dinner and then not pay for it. If you dont it just becomes an ordinary dinner
This is why I make it perfectly clear that I pay only for what I order. I hate it that splitting the bill is presented as fair because there's always someone who takes advantage orders loads of food and wine then expects everyone to pay for it.
@Gaming with Ag and Ac Joey was good enough to land a starring role on a soap opera, Rachel has never had a job before (and you don't sound like someone who has either, so allow me to inform you that everyone's terrible at their first job-you have to learn), and Phoebe probably could quit her job but then instead of having little money she would have no money. It doesn't matter what you think you're worth, you're gonna be paid less than that and you have to accept it or starve. Everyone in this show work for their money, not just Chandler, and Rachel shouldn't pay $33 for a salad. The other three were inconsiderate. You're naive.
@Gaming with Ag and Ac So, you just don't know what you're talking about, then? This is early in the series. Rachel hasn't been working for years, Joey hasn't gotten on his soap opera yet, and you are conflating the seasons. What happens later has no bearing on this scene.
@Gaming with Ag and Ac Also, she could, but there's no guarantee she'll get it. NYC is already an oversaturated job market-too many people in too small an area. Phoebe is a street kid who never went to college and is not a very desirable employee. It has nothing to do with how hard she works or what she deserves, she's in a different kind of life than the other three.
Okay it's not that the other three are incompetent, but I don't see how they're inconsiderate? They can pay for the food they ate, and hence didn't think about it. Everyone ordered on their own.
Why didn't they notice how little Joey,Rachel and Phoebe order? I love this show because it's what happens in our day to day life. Sometimes friends are jerks.

Arjun Chauhan me too. At Disney World with my family. I scraped all I could to get me and my son there so he could see Disney and I watched every cent. The very first day they all went to the grocery store and bought tons of crap that I had no intention of eating. it was hundreds of dollars and they expected everyone to chip in and I had not budgeted for that. I paid a minimal amount and made sure i ate none of it. Last day $14 left - just enough for a $7 Moracan ring souvounier from Epcot's Moraco and a hot dog. Both my sisters show up and each want to bite of my hotdog. I bought the hot dog because we were meeting for lunch at a restaurant I couldn't afford so I was trying to eat ahead of time. I hated to say no so i let them each have a bite. they didn't understand I was out of money and that was my only food for the day. I ate the hotdog as we were waiting in line and when it we went inside I told him I would pass on any more to eat because I had already eaten the hotdog. So they ordered lunch and my little sister said to me that she thought it would be nice if I paid for my older sisters lunch since she had paid for something for the whole group to enjoy earlier. I don't understand how they didn't get that I had almost no money that whole trip and at this point maybe have one or two dollars left. Every time they stopped for ice cream or a snowcone or a snack, my son and I would split a Coke. It was so obvious I was on a budget. People with money just really don't understand what it feels like to not have money. To really and truly not have money. Or they simply don't notice.
I agree. I am not paying $30 because someone else chose to order 3 different dishes when my meal only cost $14. If it’s a shared meal, like family style, then that’s when I don’t mind splitting evenly.
Why are they so awkward? Just say "I make minimum wage, I cant spend 300 bucks on dinner every saturday". You'd think they're close enough to know how more or less each of them make.
bc when ur in ur thirties, it’s embarrassing to say “I can’t afford anything on this menu”... when ur younger it’s easier to say it. But ur right, Ross Monica and Chandler shouldn’t be so insensitive
You know your friends enough to know where they can be comfortable. When my friends or I are not comfortable with money we do events at home. Everyone brings what he can afford. That's it. The most important is to be all together. However, I always wondered if they give money monthly to Monica. She feeds everyone everyday since season 1😅
Kagernereko or however the hell you spell it you must've not watched all the episodes. On one Joey gave Chandler a 900.00 check when he started making money to thank him for covering stuff for him. I'm sure it happened more times than they showed
So why did he still have to ask Chandler for money? Phoebe even said that Joey makes the most money, but that doesn’t exactly make sense if he cant pay for rent and food.
You know this was perfectly reasonable. I just don't get why they had to be so awkward about it. If something is to expensive, it's too expensive. OH and if a meal cost 33 bucks back in 1996 just think how expensive it would be today.
Well it is awkward when half your group can afford anything they want to do, and the other half of your group is struggling to make ends meet. The rich half wants to do things that cost a lot of money, thinking nothing of it, while the broke half hesitates and struggles to speak up about it. Yes, pay for what you consume of course. But it is probably best to pick activities within everyone's means.
Yeah but it shouldn't be something that is just brought up randomly at the end of a dinner. There are nice places to go to eat that don't cost $160 for six people. Just say, "Don't you think that's expensive?" and that's it.
Well sometimes you are invited to a place and do not know the prices and it get tricky trying to persuade a group of people to go somewhere else. Also it's a bit awkward when you have to say "hey, I'm kinda broke. Can we go and eat somewhere else?" It also depends on how old you are. When you are you more or less all your friends are as broke as you so you have an agreement, but as you grow older you start seeing bigger differences.
You have to understand this show started in the mid 90s and there wasn’t as much awareness of Differences in salary. Hence why they made this episode. Now, everyone is broke.
I have a question that has plagued me whenever I watch this scene..did d 3 'rich' friends not notice their 'poor' friends not eating properly..n intervene then.. or is every1 too self absorbed
I hated that money was such an awkward thing for me to talk about. My friends all come from money and always want to go out and do stuff, buy things, ect.. I would most times makeup excuse to not go because I was too embarrassed to tell them I was poor. It's not easy having to live paycheck to paycheck and still have money left just for food, when you feel obligated to spend just because you want to hangout. But when I finally had the courage to confronted them about it, they understood and we made a habbit to stay home more often. I've got good friends♡
C.C.M I relate so much. I feel bad though because we always want to do things together and try new things but I can because of money issues. Still my friends are sweet about it.
Kenneth Thomas oh sorry. I didn't understand your question. You are looking for German sitcoms? Me too. I live in Germany for over a year now, and I am struggling to learn Deutch. It is very difficult. There is one German comedian. Her name is Martina Hill. She is very popular and hilarious. She has a show called Knaller Frauen. I watch it a lot on TV. It is really amazing and ver funny. You should definitely check it out. There are also clips on UA-cam with English subtitles. It helped me so much with my German.
There are apps for that, you know. There are apps where you can take a photo of the receipt, identify who ate what, and send out a split bill after you picked it up on your card.
Just you pay for the bill with your card and everyone else give their share of the bill in cash to you... I understand it is a slight inconvenience... but it is not that big of a deal imo.
I used to be unemployed and when I went out to dinner my friends made sure I could eat with them because they knew about my situation. Although it was a sensitive topic I made sure my friends knew about it because I didn't want them to feel like I ghosted them when not going out with them due to monetary issues. After I got employed I made sure to thank them for being so understanding before treating them to a round of drinks now and then. It's all about trust and I think if you don't speak to your friends about your hardships why even have friends?
I see a lot of people comment that this is inconsistent because Chandler would have paid for Joey, but I think it was only after this scene that Chandler truly realised the position of Joey's financials and started paying for everything.
@@zaanredelinghuys191 i was wondering if chandler and joey were together since you said chandler started to pay for everything. I havent watched friends

I can see so many negative comments about this video which makes me sad. Guys, this was a wonderful show and it makes my day even with a 2 minute clip of any episode. Why cant we all just enjoy it and not spoil its essence? Each and every character in this series grew with the different seasons... thats why F.R.I.E.N.D.S is one of the most wonderful shows ever.
Roshni Gawandi not joey. I hate how he doesn’t get a proper ending He just ends up too sad The ending is too focussed on ross and rachel much like a major chunk of the show
People make a big deal about the five of them hanging out at Monica's all the time. Truth is, she likes being the hostess - the center of attention. Remember when the boys moved to the big house and started cooking for their friends, Monica got terribly insecure and wanted them to hang out at her place.
Also there's a big difference between a fancy restaurant and a grocery store. Let's say Monica spends $200 on groceries. Spread over 7 days that's about $28.50. And let's say Joey Rachel and Phoebe mooch each mooch 10% off her groceries. That's still only $8.57 being used on her friends. Dragging a friend to a fancy restaurant and making them pay $33.50 because you don't really think about money is way more inconsiderate
Can someone explain why Monica “did not have to pay”? Because in my country and with my best friends we split the bill fairly and if you celebrate something, YOU at least PAY FOR EVERYONE (but not everyone for you)
In the US the person being celebrated generally doesn't pay. In some other countries, they are the ones expected to give a "treat". Just different customs.
In my contry is the same I don't pay of it's my birthday and I do the same with my friends, we split the bill everyone pay for the birthday person food's
It's amazing down the line how the situation flipped with Chandler going to a low paying advertising job, Joey becoming rich enough to afford his own place, and Rachel getting promoted to Ralph Lauren
It happens to me ALL THE TIME with my friends! They're like _"let's go out this saturday night and drink something!"_ and I'm like _"let's go to the park and have a picnic!"_ ... they say it's not a bad idea, yet they go to a club and spend money while I'm counting every coin I have in my pockets so I'll be at least able to take a bus on my way home after 4 or 5 hours of starvation!
Once it was £8 to get into a night club, which is a lot especially for a student. I didn’t even want to go but I only paid and went to not look the odd one out. And then the group i was with decided to leave after 10 mins as the club wasn’t to their standard. 🙄
I find it obscenely hilarious *Rachel* of all people is being written sympathetically in this. She is literally the rich used-to-be heiress cut off from Daddy's credit card who would go on to beg for tips to go on a ski trip.
I once had a birthday party for my daughter at a restaurant. They had a separate room you could “rent”, but it didn’t cost anything. I asked them if there was a order minimum or any special policies they had for the room since it was separate. They said no. So the night of the party, lots of fun, good food. My mother in law came but is on disability. She ordered like a $10 dinner. The bill came and it was just like this. A grand total divided by how many people there were and they NEVER TOLD me that during the reservation process and I was furious. My mother in law owed like $50. Heck no.
Been there, I was treated like a toxic moron for pointing out that a portion of the table stuffed their mouth with several dishes while I got only a pizza and water. They just decided by themselves ''let's split up'' without even asking. One of them, I'm extra convinced about it, knew that he could take advantage of the situation by getting a Sultan meal at a low quota.
These days you don’t even have to keep track of what you owe, waiters can easily split the bill for you. And it’s easy for everyone to just pay what they owe. Which is how it should be done.
I say in advance if I can't afford. There's nothing uncomfortable about money. If you can't afford to go somewhere, tell that person in private that your financial situation is not as good as theirs and you can't afford to go. If they want to meet for a drink or two before or after, you're free for that. I even do this with other things: like the movies. One time a friend wanted to go to the movies to see a movie that I wouldn't even watch for free. I never go to the movies unless it's one that I REALLYYYYY wanted to see. I told her I was not going to come cause I don't want to spend money on something that I don't care about (I didn't say exactly that way but this was the idea). She was mad but she was not the one paying my bills, rents and groceries. Sometimes you have to be pratical.
@@kyleroberts8823 It works both ways. The friends with more money already knew the financial situation of the other 3 when choosing the reservation, but they still chose that restaurant. However, the ones who couldn't afford should have spoken up before the evening instead of waiting until that night after the bill came.
Can you believe Ross, his friends are talking about something very uncomfortable, but the minute he hears they were planning something for his birthday that's all he can think about.
We went out for our neighbours birthday, that was hosted by her friend. We were invited last minute and didn’t really like Japanese food and it was in a complex of other little eateries so we bought our food from elsewhere and we ate in the outside garden area with everyone else. Anyway bill comes and it’s massive. She tells Birthday girl and her boyfriend/daughter that we will pay for them. They’d dunk bottle after bottle of wine, while we drank water and bought food there when we hadn’t. She was a real bully about it too. My husband didn’t know what to do and paid it. Luckily our neighbours gave us some money when we got home. It was so awkward, our neighbours are like no we will pay our bill and she’s like don’t be silly it’s your birthday ....., blah blah blah. No every time they ask us out I ask if xxxx is going to be there.
Ya this is what happens when ppl don't know how to be assertive in their positions and blame other ppl for something they could've easily escaped. You can't get mad at someone for trying to take advantage of you when you ultimately let them
@@aphro123star yeah no. That's victim blaming. Yes, people could be more assertive. But in this circunstance when the paying of the food was thrusted upon them in the original post. Or just in general people shouldn't take advantage in the first place. So yes, we still have a right to get mad at those people who take advantage of those who lack confidencs.
It's one of my least favourites as well. I was actually a bit nervous to watch this video because I've only watched this episode once or twice but I still remember how awkward it was after all these years.
People saying " they eat at Monica all the time though"...Okay, but the restaurant they imply they go to is more expensive in the end than the grocery you will pay, even for the exact same food. And Monica would be super sad or go ballistic if anyone else even try to be the one who provide food. There are multiple episodes that hints on it, and a whole episode that is centered about how she is sad to not be the hostess of the group and try hard to be again. Monica LOVES to make food. Even for neighbours she doesn't know. I garantee you, even if any of the other 5 wanted to instead make food regularly to make up for it,or whatever, she will NOT be grateful at all. She will just be stressed and disappointed. She doesn't want people to make it, nor to pay for it either when its at her home. She just want to be known as a great provider and cook ( see the neighbour episode with the candies)
I always found it kind of hilarious that Ross was portrayed as having at least a moderate amount of money at this point. Anyone who works in academia knows that a newly minted doctorate holder like him, even if he wasn't drowning in student debt, would be making almost nothing - ESPECIALLY in a field like paleontology. Joey would probably be making more than him as a struggling bit actor.
Whenever I got out with my friends, we each pay for what we have unless one of us is treating the others. If someone is strapped for cash, it's understandable.
Joanna Velez What about paying for those who are strapped for cash? Personally I would not be able to enjoy a lobster whilst a not so well off friend would munch on a side salad.
@@nnnnnnnnnnn7292 In my group one of us will cover if someone is strapped for cash or we’ll all pitch in to split to cover. But in general, we pay for what we ordered unless it’s a shared meal.
This same situation happened to me a couple weeks ago, I went out with 3 friends to a great Italian restaurant I had the most simple and cheapest pizza on the menu (margarita) while the rest order more expensive ones. I had to pay 20 € for it, it was so unfair. And yes, it's awkward to reclaim about it. So I totally get how Phoebe, Rachel and Joey were feeling.
What is done in those cases is very simple, as soon as you receive your order, take out your money corresponding to what you ordered and put it on the table. READY. In no way will they make you pay more because you have already defined your payment.
I don't think so... Rachel lived with Monica which was her grandma's and let's not forget that Chandler pretty much covered his and Joey's living expenses and whatever he needed for his gigs, this is just an instance where they forgot but they weren't cheap or unsympathetic to their friends... would you have done what Chandler did for years or Monica did for someone who doesn't invite you to their wedding (meaning no contact for so long with eachother)...?
Monica took Rachel in even though she wasn't invited to her wedding. Chandler was paying most of Joey's bills. Ross even stepped in to give Joey money when he lost his soap opera job. And Monica fed EVERYONE in her apartment every day. The 3 people complaining should have simply spoken up about the restaurant before agreeing to show up.
First of all, I find kind of funny that the one who invites you to celebrate an achievement not only doesn't offer the dinner to everyone, but also acts like the guest 😂 second of all, I really have an hard time believing that people who lived in a student apartment without elevator and dishwasher earned so much 😂
Yeah i find that weird too. Me and my friends will always make sure that everybody got fairly. Even if anybody has shortage we will order what he can afford or some one will sponser his remaining money
More like $66-$70 seeing as the second season took place in 1995. And to be honest, for an upscale New York restaurant, 400 dollars for 3 full meals (including appetizers, desserts, drinks, coffees, wine etc) and 3 side dishes doesn't sound like such a bad deal
This is probably the most realistic plot point in the entire series.

@@kktan3153 in Ross defense, this is not the first time that they are going out to a restaurant and I'm kinda sure from Ross' character that at the first and second time he'd be the one to ask whether everyone's fine with splitting the bill and the others probably shrugged it off and said "yeah its fine"
Therefore for him saying that he thought its not an issue: he cant read minds, the others didnt say anything
Yes they are good friends and Ross should have noticed that they were uncomfortable with it: some just dont notice that due to circumstances.
I agree with the idealism 'you are not OK, you should just say it' though. But I choose 'try to be more sensitive' over that idealism as I can't read mind.
@@kktan3153 I think he's not insensitive either because its not the first time theyre eating out
It would have been insensitive if he never asked whether splitting the bill is ok, but again I'm convinced that he probably has in the past in the beginning and they didnt say anything

To be fair, EVERYBODY constantly eats Monica's food, and Chandler practically sponsors Joey's life. Rent, acting classes, food.
It doesn't mean they have the money for expensive dinners.

When it comes to shelling out cash for a dinner that's as expensive as a whole week's grocery, that's when it starts to feel expensive.

It's both funny and depressingly realistic.
For those who don't know, this was a reference to the fact that the cast didn't earn the same amount of money per episode at the beginning. With time, they "assembled" and decided to earn the same together, which was rarity back then.
I remember when that happened. They banded together and negotiated equal pay.
Who earned more? And on what criteria was that decided?...Like where have they told about this?
You realize that the actors don't write the show, right?
@@breatherevolution6605 I think i remember reading back in the day that it was David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston who got more and it was based on that the show was to be built around them (like it kinda is) but they demanded that everyone should get equal pay. So the total bill is $168, and if I had to guess what everyone owes (considering Ross, Monica and Chandler also appear to have wine and the rest have water):
Ross: $48
Monica: $48
Chandler: $38
Rachel: $8
Phoebe: $10
Joey: $16
So for the original proposition of $28 each, Ross and Monica are probably saving at least $20 each, Chandler is probably saving about $10, and the rest owe two to three times as much for their food is worth. I don't know about you, but I think I would be quite offended if someone proposed that as if it were fair.
DAMN!
But when they share Monica's it's 5,50 for everyone so I guess her meal was actually 27,50 ?
Don't forget that this was season 2, which was aired at about 1995-1996. Due to the inflation rate over the years, $100 then is about $170 now. And here I thought it was already expensive enough

I honestly wonder how Chandler, Monica, and Ross didn’t notice red flags 🚩
1. They got full meals, while Rachel, Phoebe, and Joey got miniature little appetizers
2. Rachel, Phoebe, and Joey are eating the bread sticks because they’re no where near full
3. Chandler, Monica, and Ross ordered wine while Rachel Phoebe and Joey ordered water
3: Chandler Monica and Ross got dessert while Rachel, Phoebe and Joey didn’t order dessert.
How come those three didn’t notice any of this?!
I'm quite late to reply, but maybe they thought that Joey, Phoebe & Rachel aren't that hungry perhaps? Even so, as friends they should have asked as to why are they ordering basic appetizers instead of main course meals.
@@tirthankarsarkar4206 joey is always hungry lol
I absolutely love this show and do love this episode but in the context of the entirety of the show… this is the only time they ever really care about spending each others money. Racheal, Phoebe, and Joey live off the other’s generosity and the fact they have a problem now with chipping in honestly would feel offensive. Do you realize for the first couple seasons Joey and Rachael didn’t have any money and relied on the others and now that they have finally gotten some money they don’t feel like contributing.
Because it’s convenient for the plot of this episode and for this scene
True, I'm in the position of unfortunate three and my friends notice that I mostly order just a small dessert when they have full meals. They offer to buy me a meal but that's just taking advantage of them.
They have enough to eat out every day and still have a lot left to save up while I don't go out every day and still got little to nothing saved up.
I'm glad that they understand my situation.

What soup are you having that is cold cucumber mush? 😹 I certainly hope it’s not 30 something dollars
In some places on birthday the person whose birthday it is pays for party.
While in other places, his/her friends/relatives pay for a party...
Because it was Ross’s idea to take her out to celebrate, it wasn’t her idea.
That was very annoying, assuming they should split it when some ate more than the others

Gaming with Ag and Ac wow you seem like someone born with a silver spoon brat! The world doesn’t give you what you need
This is so realistic. Especially the way they opened up on the matter. It’s never easy to talk about it but i love how understanding everyone is
I notice it was hard for Joey to speak up for himself, Rachel, and Phoebe.

The normal thing is to pay for what you had not to total the amount of everyone and divided, doesn’t make any sense.
But what if the difference is one or two dollar over a few dozen? Is it really worth it then?
I agree. I am not paying $30 because someone else chose to order 3 different dishes when my meal only cost $14. If it’s a shared meal, like family style, then that’s when I don’t mind splitting evenly.

Funny how Phoebe said, “Joey with his teeny pizza!” angrily LOL 😂 😂
The way Phoebe says No is funny. She was so darn cute.
As a kid, this episode really spoke to me... Made me realize that not all jobs pay equally, even within the same field
Why are they so awkward? Just say "I make minimum wage, I cant spend 300 bucks on dinner every saturday". You'd think they're close enough to know how more or less each of them make.
Because it's embarassing to mention for many people, no matter how close you are as friends. They feel uncomfortable.
Pride. Sometimes it feels uncomfortable to tell your friends (who have better jobs) that you're broke.
bc when ur in ur thirties, it’s embarrassing to say “I can’t afford anything on this menu”... when ur younger it’s easier to say it.
It’s also the 90s so ppl aren’t so progressive
and joey ends up making more money than all of them
FACT.😂😂
True. Someone calculated, a feature film would earn him a lot of money, so probably he is the richest
Kagernereko or however the hell you spell it you must've not watched all the episodes. On one Joey gave Chandler a 900.00 check when he started making money to thank him for covering stuff for him. I'm sure it happened more times than they showed
Melissa Taylor sorry, which episode was that? I don’t remember him doing that
So why did he still have to ask Chandler for money?
Arvind Talukdar that’s not true at all.
Never realized that since Joey, Phoebe, and Rachel ordered so little, they were the only ones eating the complimentary breadsticks.
I have a question that has plagued me whenever I watch this scene..did d 3 'rich' friends not notice their 'poor' friends not eating properly..n intervene then.. or is every1 too self absorbed
The answer is: maybe, maybe not
I hated that money was such an awkward thing for me to talk about.
Same here…It is embarrassing to tell your friends that I don’t have much money to spend and I don’t want to spend
Joey's face when Phoebe mentions his teenie pizza kills me everytime. I know that feeling my friend.

It's annoying when you're eating at a restaurant that doesn't do split bills and you're the only one who brought a card
they all do but you have to ask, become a lot of the time people don't want it split, one bill one person pays.
There are apps for that, you know. There are apps where you can take a photo of the receipt, identify who ate what, and send out a split bill after you picked it up on your card.
Lol yea that happened to me a couple times annoyed the crap outta me friends
Oooh no, I love it. You get a whole heap of cash.
Just you pay for the bill with your card and everyone else give their share of the bill in cash to you... I understand it is a slight inconvenience... but it is not that big of a deal imo.
I love this episode shows reals friends and how we struggle in different situations.
The fact that neither Monica, ross, or chandler offered to treat just to relieve the tension speaks volumes
"So the ebola virus, that's gotta suck, huh?"
The fact that Monica, Chandler and Ross are more embarrassed than Rachel, Phoebe and Joey gives the scene a whole new level..

Shut up troll!
Every character except Ross
You appear to be ignorant to the fact that Monica clearly wasnt a Chef lol
$28 each from 6 people is $168 total. $168 among 5 people is $33.60 each, not $33.50. No wonder Ross got a 1250 on his SAT.
Ross probably just asked for everyone to pay $33.50, while he paid the full $34, to keep the addition cleaner
Can someone explain why Monica “did not have to pay”? Because in my country and with my best friends we split the bill fairly and if you celebrate something, YOU at least PAY FOR EVERYONE (but not everyone for you)
I live in the US. Theres no way I'm letting my friend pay for her food on her birthday. The least I could do is buy her a meal. It's like a gift lol.
XXXMUXICISLIFEXXX oh, I did not know that
Same, in my country people who are celebrating their birthday/wedding/etc usually pay for everyone else....
In the US the person being celebrated generally doesn't pay. In some other countries, they are the ones expected to give a "treat". Just different customs.
In my contry is the same I don't pay of it's my birthday and I do the same with my friends, we split the bill everyone pay for the birthday person food's
It's amazing down the line how the situation flipped with Chandler going to a low paying advertising job, Joey becoming rich enough to afford his own place, and Rachel getting promoted to Ralph Lauren

they're still your friends, yes. but they shouldn't be your regular dining friends! ;)

Um if anything the other characters get more sympathy than her and what do you mean rachel of all people?
This is what Friends have always been about. It was always about each other.
Ok, but this scene was really well delivered
I just never think of money as an issue…that’s coz you have it! So true!!!
The way those three are eating the breadsticks constantly was a nice subtle touch.
Heck no.
This is basically 90% of all groups of Friends lmao.
Always a few people who make more then the rest
Been there, I was treated like a toxic moron for pointing out that a portion of the table stuffed their mouth with several dishes while I got only a pizza and water. They just decided by themselves ''let's split up'' without even asking. One of them, I'm extra convinced about it, knew that he could take advantage of the situation by getting a Sultan meal at a low quota.
Such a realistic scene, I love it
I like Ross and chandler here... Really handled well
"I just never think of money as an issue"
"That's cause you have it"
These days you don’t even have to keep track of what you owe, waiters can easily split the bill for you.
Or you should ask up front who can afford to eat at the restaurant you're going to.
@@kyleroberts8823 It works both ways. The friends with more money already knew the financial situation of the other 3 when choosing the reservation, but they still chose that restaurant. However, the ones who couldn't afford should have spoken up before the evening instead of waiting until that night after the bill came.
If I don't have money to go out, I just make up an excuse to spare their feelings. I have way too much pride to admit when I'm broke.

Yes, people could be more assertive. But in this circunstance when the paying of the food was thrusted upon them in the original post. Or just in general people shouldn't take advantage in the first place. So yes, we still have a right to get mad at those people who take advantage of those who lack confidencs.
I love how Rachel just kept munching on -whatever that was- as they were about to talk about it. Haha
I think this episode on was one of my least favorite episodes. Money is such an uncomfortable topic.
Ellie S Probably the most realistic one.
It's one of my least favourites as well. I was actually a bit nervous to watch this video because I've only watched this episode once or twice but I still remember how awkward it was after all these years.
Ellie S money is the root of all evil.
Ellie S yeah exactly i hate this episode too
How come? My friends and I know each other for several years now and eventually it will stop being uncomfortable, unless you make it to.
Fans fighting more in the comment section than the actors in this scene 🤣🤣😂😂
This was one of the most realistic scenarios portrayed on the show !
This still goes.
If he had assistantship during his doctorate which is common in STEM subjects, he would not be drowning in student debt.
His parents were also well off and I’m sure they paid for his college. They paid for his really expensive weddings too.
Maybe Mr and Mrs Geller paid for his college
Phoebe: No, uhh no way, sorry not gonna happen
Chandler: Wow, wow prom night flashback
😂😂
Talk about financial planning and money management 😂💰😁
Chandler and his flashbacks 🤣🤣
Whenever I got out with my friends, we each pay for what we have unless one of us is treating the others. If someone is strapped for cash, it's understandable.
Joanna Velez
What about paying for those who are strapped for cash?
I loved this episode, but you do have to admit it was NEVER an issue before or after this episode again...well except for Joey LOL.
For so-called friends there's an amazing lack of empathy in the group.
Fuck off
@@senaitgoshutekleyesus3009 Still, they have unsympathetic moments too like this.
He's talking about this scene, not the whole show
“Birthday hoopla” is an amazing line reading
First of all, I find kind of funny that the one who invites you to celebrate an achievement not only doesn't offer the dinner to everyone, but also acts like the guest 😂 second of all, I really have an hard time believing that people who lived in a student apartment without elevator and dishwasher earned so much 😂
Most relatable moment for me on the entire series. I hate not having enough money and discussing that is super awkward.
I don't think anyone can overlook that the person sitting next hadn't had any thing ...ATLEAST NOT IN INDIA
Same in Arab culture !
Yeah i find that weird too. Me and my friends will always make sure that everybody got fairly.
Even if anybody has shortage we will order what he can afford or some one will sponser his remaining money
And don’t forget that in the 90s, $30 for dinner was like $70 now.
Why do I keep getting alcohol ads whenever I watch Friends clips?
Must be Fun Bobby 😉
Coincidentally, I got an ad about a cash management app in this vid.
I agree you just pay for what you order. But if you're paying for someone else be specific about prices and what they can order.
So, the Coronavirus... That’s gotta suck! 🤣 lol
Yo Jay, how's Gloria and Manny doing?
@@MKT-7777 I’d tell you, if I knew who they were.
In our culture if my friends are celebrating something nice in my life, I pay.
I feel a Phoebe on this. Just pay for what you ordered. 🤷🏾
Especially if they didnt share their plates.
$33 in the 90s is about $77 in today's money
More like $66-$70 seeing as the second season took place in 1995. And to be honest, for an upscale New York restaurant, 400 dollars for 3 full meals (including appetizers, desserts, drinks, coffees, wine etc) and 3 side dishes doesn't sound like such a bad deal
