Thanks for this video my 2006 Toyota Tacoma dropped its fuel tank and my garage is taking about junking it --- yet the 10 years I've owned it I've maintained it like new . Your video gives me hope now !
If your Tacoma is in decent shape and you want to keep it, DIY is the way to go! :) There are many videos out that that can help guide people through repairs and maintenance. I am glad my video helped you in some way! :)
THANK YOU! The passenger side strap on our 1997 (!) RAV4 broke - probably a long while ago judging from the rust. The tank was held up thanks to a side plastic guard bolted to the remainder of the strap - until that broke too and was visibly hanging down - thank goodness I saw it before we had an inferno. Anyway ..... your video was a perfect guide even though the set up is slightly different. I had to go to the dealer for the strap - cost $90 but the aftermarket units are for the later models. Key pointers you gave: use a jack to hold up the tank, and lots of WD-40 for the bolts, which I allowed to work while I waited for the part to come in. Even then it took all my strength and a 3/8" drive to get the rear bolt unscrewed all the way. Luckily the ground clearance is so great I didn't need to jack the car up, which is good because the original jack is useless and I only have one other.
I took pictures while I was underneath and may post them if I can figure out how to do so and if it may be helpful for original RAV4 owners.
Also: I copied your outfit for the work - down to the socks and crocs! Great dog, too!
Thanks. Mine just fell off today, 01 RAV4 passenger side. Waiting on the part to come in. I hope my husband watches this.
Have a 2004 rav 4 and one of the straps went today, June 2021 your video will really help, thanks for posting
Just happened to my wife's Rav4. Perfect vid, thanks!
Great video! I count on UA-cam a lot for making easy repairs on my car. Save a ton of money 😅 Thank you ❤
Hey, THANKS for the Skillz. Watched your video and replaced a fuel tank strap on my 04 Toyota Rav 4. Slightly different, but close enough. Used aftermarket parts, just as you suggested. Had to wait 3-4 hours for my local parts store to get it in, but I’m off and running again. Inadvertently broke off one of the small bolts holding the metal rock guard, so I may have an extra rattle, oh well. Again, many thanks!
Thank you for this video. Mine just fell off yesterday and I thought it was going to be an expensive repair, but you saved me 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💛
Thank you. The advice about jacking up the gas tank is a good one as the strap was a really snug fit.
Great vid, I bought a 2005 rav 4 yesterday, it snapped on the way home! Was only a 70 mile drive, just my luck, last car the gearbox broke on the way back 😅
Solid Vid....exact same thing happened to me tonight on a 2005 Rav4. Still need to limp it back home....break out the wire/ratchet straps lol
Great Job!!! This helped me alot...
Thank you for this how to. Just got done replacing both my straps. One broke a while ago and i had it wire hangered up. The other was super rusty and bent with easy when i took it off. I put gorilla tape on them instead of painting a coat. Should last forever now. Only took me an hour to do both.
I'm glad my video could help you Vanta Blak! :) That is an awesome tip with the Gorilla Glue Tape!! :)
I live in the UK and have a Corolla with fairly rusty fuel tanks and will take them off to repaint them so they don't snap. Ive repainted the back axle and all of the wearable parts underneath because they were so rusty due to our salty roads. Looks heaps better now and once the rear chassis legs are stone chipped it will look like new again underneath
And, I subscribed. Looking forward to seeing more of your Skillz. Take care.
Thanks! Ours just broke today....gotta take it to the mechanic to do this.
Nice dog bro😍
Thank you gil, just what I needed
I'm glad the video helped! :)
Good Camera work Thanks.
Damn, you should have seen the one that fell off mine a few months ago. So much rust I had to have the new one welded to the frame! lol
I got some straps delivered today but can’t get the bolts off
Mine just snapped and was grinding on driveshaft my bolts are so rusty it's not even a nut. So I'm going to use a rachet strap to get me home 60 miles. Then see if it's time to run a external tank in the hatch and cut the tank out of my rav
Agree on a coat of undercoat or evan a few coats of paint
But I would (and am)replacing both if 1 broke
Good video. Thanks
If you run out of breath loosening a bolt you need to take better care of your health bud, live a long time for them kids they need you
I just had mine fail 2 weeks ago on my 2005 RAV with 195K on the clock. Passenger side snapped and started hearing scraping noise. Pretty simple fix once the new part arrived.
just want to say this just happened to me same thing
I wonder if this is similar to 2000 Camry?
I'm not completely sure but I think it will be about the same
Excellent video. My question is I have a 2002 Rav , but when I look at the replacement straps, some are 38" and some are 34." The Toyota dealers don't even know which size to get, not that I would buy them there. I gave them my vin number and everything. Any ideas? Thanks.
My moms 1998 rav4 has the same problem and the bolt snapped off as I was removing it so I guess I'm going to be getting a torch and bolt removal tool
If you find you can't get all 4 rusted bolts off of the plastic gas tank cover, keep in mind that you might be able go straight to the strap removal rather and the straps and plastic cover can separate from the tank together. Just be sure to support the tank.
Since you have the back wheels where the EMERGENCY BRAKES are off the ground, would it not be a good idea to put wheel chocks on those front tires because they roll freely now. If the car rolls forward and those jacks fall over, you'll have a really bad day.
Hey,
I have a 03 GX model does yours by any chance have a heat shield next to your gas tank...
Any need to take the rubber piece off the old strap to put on the new strap? Or just throw the metal strap right on by itself?
Old comment but maybe someone else will see this . My Toyota dealer told me they suspected the rubber on the straps was holding in the moisture and Salts and road spray . I have a different model Toyota but similar set up.
Hey Gill I need to replace the tank on mine any advise be helpful rock hit the tank
Sorry to hear that bud. Just be really careful taking off the tubing and such from the damaged tank as it is likely aged and could be delicate and brittle. Also, make sure you have PB Blaster or some sort of rust penetrant and spray the heck out of the bolts holding in the tank straps. Let it soak for a time before you attempt to loosen the bolts. If you think replacing the gas tank is a pain, breaking a rusted bolt head off and trying to get the broken bolt out is a nightmare! LOL Best of luck with your repair. Keep us posted! :)
@@GilSkillz thank Gill yea thinking of changing out the filler neck and straps while it's all apart u less its all in good condition
Trailer hitch jack point. Hum
Ptsd when hear 10mm socket
