Tiny correction: Elrond’s wife actually did not die. She had been captured and tortured nearly to death by orcs before being rescued by her and Elrond’s twin sons, Elladan and Elrohir. She was healed in body, but she could not bear to be in Middle Earth anymore and had already left for Valinor. That’s one reason why Elrond will soon leave. He wants to rejoin his wife, but he knows he can’t leave until Sauron has been defeated.

A tiny detail that I personally love that was glossed over: when the fellowship is grieving on the mountainside, you can see Legolas isn't grieving like the rest but looks visible confused and that's because the Istari are eons old, like the elves, and if Gandalf (an undying being sent by gods) can die then what does that mean about him. Essentially, he isn't grieving so much as going through an existential crisis.

9 is a holy number. It is the final number. 9 is God. All other numbers that follow it require another digit, and only represent values. If you combine and reduce any number after 9 you will see that the sequence of 1 to 9 is the only sequence and it repeats forever. 10 isnt a real number. Its just 1 and 0. Which amounts to 1. And so on and so on.

Great job on the breakdown! As many times as I’ve seen this movie, I learned things I didn’t know before. And I love how you highlighted the music! I’ve always noted that as Boromir was dying, he called Aragorn his brother, captain and king. Those words describe Aragorn’s roles in each of the trilogy. In the first movie, he was a brother, part of the fellowship. In the second movie he is the captain leading the defense of the people of Rohan. And in the third movie, Aragorn is the king. Looking forward to your breakdowns of the next two movies.

Erik, thank you so much for this, and your channel in general. Nobody - _nobody_ - does these breakdowns as well, and as joyfully. In a platform deluged in "analyses", regurgitating whatever horseshit they were taught, or questionable info they found without doing due diligence in evaluating, to see someone cut *so* *damn* *deep* into artworks without simultaneously grinding an axe is a rare thing, and it is thoroughly appreciated. And for this FOTR breakdown, I particularly love your unpacking of the _music_ and the astonishing density of it. Thank you!

As a former addict… I know see Frodo’s “unhealable wound” as some sort of analogy to never ending drug addiction and craving. I’ve been sober now for 12 years… but sadly, those cravings never go away. It’s a curse, a punishment that you sadly take with you for the rest of your life.
The ring is essentially a drug too… the more Frodo where’s it, the more he needs it, and thus the more it tears away at his soul and humanity. Until he eventually becomes a shell of himself, much like Smeagle.

24:27 - there exists (or once existed, unless it's still up) a video on UA-cam of the entire Fellowship movie, but every time Samwise takes an extra step further than he's ever set from the Shire, it replays this scene of him taking that extra step! T_T
    IT'S SO STUPIDLY HILARIOUS! T_T
