Too bad his lifelong dream of playing one of Tolkien's characters never came to fruition. Of all the characters that he had played throughout his career, the closest character to that one was the Jabberwocky.
A tiny detail that I personally love that was glossed over: when the fellowship is grieving on the mountainside, you can see Legolas isn't grieving like the rest but looks visible confused and that's because the Istari are eons old, like the elves, and if Gandalf (an undying being sent by gods) can die then what does that mean about him. Essentially, he isn't grieving so much as going through an existential crisis.
Omg it didn’t register until I read this but you’re totally right! I always thought his reaction was a bit odd but didn’t put much thought to it. What a brilliant detail 🤯
i interpreted the scene a different way, that his reaction was more childlike, somehow. he has a similar expression seeing boromir die, so i thought it was him not being used to death, having a very kid-like sad reaction to the death of his friends
I took the scenes as him learning about grief since death isn't normal for elves, he played the part of concerned, confused, interested and a bit sympathetic all at once, at least that's what I got from it
Tiny correction: Elrond’s wife actually did not die. She had been captured and tortured nearly to death by orcs before being rescued by her and Elrond’s twin sons, Elladan and Elrohir. She was healed in body, but she could not bear to be in Middle Earth anymore and had already left for Valinor. That’s one reason why Elrond will soon leave. He wants to rejoin his wife, but he knows he can’t leave until Sauron has been defeated.
I met Sean Aston not too long ago and he was the nicest guy in the world. He talked about how Samwise is still one of his all time favorite roles he played. He had such love and respect for Sam. Truly a remarkable guy
I think Sean really followed the book's interpretation of the love, respect, and admiration of Frodo as Sam's elder. Because Elijah looks like such a kid, he has a hard time of selling that Frodo is the older of the two. Maybe a more youthful old man like Toby Maguire would have worked better for this aspect.
@@pawacotengI think Elijah had a gorgeous ageless look to him in the films. Frodo is supposed to look ageless as the Ring stopped his aging when he first obtained it at age 33, equivalent to the human age of 18.

Great job on the breakdown! As many times as I’ve seen this movie, I learned things I didn’t know before. And I love how you highlighted the music! I’ve always noted that as Boromir was dying, he called Aragorn his brother, captain and king. Those words describe Aragorn’s roles in each of the trilogy. In the first movie, he was a brother, part of the fellowship. In the second movie he is the captain leading the defense of the people of Rohan. And in the third movie, Aragorn is the king. Looking forward to your breakdowns of the next two movies.
Agreed, easily the best TRILOGY of all time. (Sorry Star Wars OT, Cornetto Trilogy, Nolan Batman, and BTTF.) I don't think there has been a series where nearly every line is so iconic.
I agree, it's the best in the trilogy. Bringing me laughter, joy, sadness and hope. Especially everything in Moria... The dread of the Balrog, Gandalf falling, the fellowship mourning... And after that, Boromirs redemption and the scene with Sam and Frodo on the boat 😭 damn I love this movie.

That's awesome, I got my ex to watch it regardless of her not caring, so I put it on anyways and she got caught up into it, and by 2towers she was invested (she grew up a Potter fan and never unfortunately never cared to try lotr)
Bill the Pony was not eaten. He managed to get back to Bree and was reunited with Sam there. Also, Celebrian did not die. She was ambushed by orcs on her way to Lothlorien and tortured. Elrond was able to heal her wonds but she never fully recovered (physically or spiritually). She returned to Valinor to live in peace. Gotta watch our man over at Nerd of the Rings
There are a few errors throughout when it comes to book material, another I noticed was saying Gandalf worked out the riddle on Moria's doors, when it was Merry.

There is a detail I love in how the 9 Wringwraiths are used to build the stakes and tension in The Fellowship movie. 1 nazgul on the road to make the hobbits afraid, joined by 2 others at the ferry crossing to make it clear that the danger is mounting. The 3 becomes 4 in Bree for the attack at the Inn, and 5 ringwraiths at Weathertop. Once the chase with arwen begins, then the full 9 burst out as the chase breaks into full speed, for maximum panic and peril. Just brilliant.
I love the tiny detail in this film where Sean Bean says "Still sharp" ( 43:00 ) as he also played the title character in 'Sharpe', a British TV series of the 1990s to 2000s. Fantastic video, by the way.
An hour and 12 minutes added to the best time I've spent on the site. Even though I'm going to listen to them all individually as they release, I hope you release a super cut of all 3 breakdowns in 1 video. Perfect for when I'm at work and just wanna listen to my man EA Voss all day long
24:27 - there exists (or once existed, unless it's still up) a video on UA-cam of the entire Fellowship movie, but every time Samwise takes an extra step further than he's ever set from the Shire, it replays this scene of him taking that extra step! T_T IT'S SO STUPIDLY HILARIOUS! T_T

These movies are so important to me, i hope the other 2 breakdowns follow soon! Thank you for making great content
The work you put into these videos is unmatched! So stoked for this one thank you again Mr. Voss!
Thank you Erik! I have been eagerly waiting for you to do Lord of the Rings! It was great!
Great job Eric and the team! This is one of my favorite movies and I appreciate your time and care going through this film .
The Watcher did not eat Bill, he returned to Bree and Sam meets him again.
I love the tiny detail in this film where Sean Bean says "Still sharp" ( 43:00 ) as he also played the title character in 'Sharpe', a British TV series of the 1990s to 2000s. Fantastic video, by the way.
Its very obvious how much passion goes into these videos and I love it. Keep up all the hard work and keep producing amazing content guys :)
I love these classic breakdowns keep em coming
Congratulations on 1 year Eric. Thank you!
This was such an awesome watch. Excited for the next two dives.
Two of my favorites, LOTR, & The Deep Dive!
It’s gonna be a good day!
I just had a marathon last week, this is perfect timing, love it!!
This was video was a surprise for sure, but a welcome one - Cant wait to listen to the whole thing!!
Now this is exactly what I needed to be in the background while im working today! Thank you Erik!
Great work! Never tire of watching your breakdowns
i don’t know how it never crossed my mind that erik was probably a lord of the rings fan but finding out he’s as big of a fan as me is incredible.
Thanks!
IT'S SO STUPIDLY HILARIOUS! T_T
Extremely excited for this breakdown as well as the other films in the trilogy! I truly appreciate the amazing work you do on these projects Erik (& co), making me enjoy the films even more! Thank you!
I loved this. Thanks for breathing new life into this for me.
I have been waiting for the LOTR breakdowns! Thank you so much Erik and team!
The best breakdowns you’ll ever do. Nothing will beat these lord of the rings breakdowns. I haven’t even watched it yet and I know this’ll be the best breakdown yet.
Wow!! I absolutely loved every minute of this. I can’t wait for the next one. I love the way you breakdown every last piece and make us feel this movie in a completely different light.
Need that 2 towers breakdown asap. Lovely work here. Inspired me to rewatch a trilogy, I didn't understand much when it first came out. Great stuff.
“dude you brought your bong to work, no sh”t you missed the ring” haha classic
I watched this when you first posted it, just came back after finishing the first book on audible. This is such an amazing breakdown! Got chills and teared up quite a few times ❤
This is like a holiday gift to us all and the love and care in this video had me in tears at the end. Thank you all so much!
Thank you SO SO much for this deep dive!!! Just recently I watched a triple feature of the LOTR movies in cinema again. These movies are awesome.
I can't be the ONLY one that wants a full Playlist of a deep dive on the entire series.
I am so late, but this came in my recommended and I am so glad it did. Thank you for all your hard work on this video. I'll be watching the other two!
Can’t wait for the Two Towers Analysis!!!!!!!!!!! I loved this episode. Congratulations on the baby
I literally watched the trilogy for the first time last week so this breakdown comes at the perfect time!
That's what we waited for
I have thoroughly enjoyed the Deep Dive channel. Such awesome breakdowns, it's a film buff's dream UA-cam channel.
I’m happy to see some older breakdowns I have to start a channel for film criticism coming up in a few months for university (digital cinematography bachelors student) and was debating on doing this with older films but didn’t know if anyone would have interest glad to see you making these on lord of the rings of all things!
Wow. I’m so glad this channel is a thing, I mean I have dreamt of a breakdown of this movie as it was so good but some things were definitely a lil hard to understand. THIS CHANNEL NEEDS TO GROWWWWW
Wonderful, wonderful! I was in tears again, recalling the joy of watching what I had read meshing perfectly with what I was seeing on the screen. Fantastic breakdown!
I knew when there hadn’t been a video posted in a while that something BIG was coming and it was well worth the wait! Great video
Thank you so much for the time and care taken to break these down. Wonderful work!! Keep it up. Lots of love
I love your knowledgeable analysis of the music. Clearly, you have some kind of music background. Well done!
VOSS!!! This must’ve been so much work, THANK YOU!!! I cannot wait for the other two.
So while this video is an hour long… it’s actually gonna take up about 15 hours of my time cause now I gotta rewatch all the LOTR movies.
I saw your breakdown of mad max just before this, and then I saw that you had just put this one out. They are both awesome and I can't wait for the two towers! Will be looking forward to the notification.
Please bring more of this Lord Of The Rings series i have never watched it but your deep dive helps me understand how great the movie was and to sum it up in a short timed video ❤👌
Very gratified that you covered the full extended edition.
Really impressive (and often funny!) rundown; the best on youtube. You guys must've spent many hours researching and writing this video, and it shows!
There is a church door in Stow-in-the-Wold that inspired Tolkein's design of the door of Durin. I believe it St James.
I'm so glad you got this out before paternal leave!
Thank you Erik for these videos I absolutely love this trilogy and can't wait to see the rest of these deep dives.
Your passion for these films and breakdowns is what really connects us
Awesome!!! what a travel trhough the details of this movie! thanks!!!
I absolutely love the use of language in the books, and how perfectly it was adapted into the movie.
