Fun fact: there have only been 3 televised 298 games, one by Johnny Petraglia in 1978, one by Brian Davis in the 90s, and this one just recently. Speaking of nearly perfect games, there are a lot that haven't been uploaded here. Brian Davis's 299 at the 1993 Greater Harrisburg open against WRW Jr. where he lost out on $130k, Parker Bohn III's 299 at the 1997 PBT from Las Vegas (Aka the Showboat invitational) in the semifinal match against Steve Jaros, Wes Malott's 299 at the PBA Mile High Classic in the First Semifinal Against Patrick Allen, L.A.X.'s 299 in the 2017 PBA Elias Cup Finals, which was their second Elias Cup 299 Game, and the 1975 King Louie open that was Mark Roth's (rest in peace) first of 2 televised 299's For 298's, I mentioned them earlier but also a more recent, albeit non-televised one that could be added along With Petraglia's, Davis's, and Smallwood's 298s is Shawn Maldonaldo's 298 in the 2023 PBA Jackson Classic's opening match. 289 was also present often, here are some that are not in the nearly Perfect Series; Dick Allen's 289 in the 2011 Dick Weber PBA Playoffs, Anthony Simonsen's 289 in the 2021 PBA Tour Finals Qualifying for Group 2, Jesper Svensson's 289 in this year's Playoffs Quarterfinals against Marshall Kent which Kent had almost converted the 7-10 Split that same match. Pete Weber may have also shot a 289 on TV at some point too. And then 288 has two more that haven't been added and both are from the 2000's, being The Championship Match of the 2005 El Paso Classic where Parker Bohn III shot 288 against Robert Smith, and The 2013 Cheetah Championship Where Wes Malott shot 288 against Pete Weber in Match 2. A lot of nearly perfect games to add in the coming future.
This isn't the 1st time Smallwood almost shot a perfect game, he even missed it 3 yrs ago when he was up against Simonsen from 278-225. 🤦♂ He went from 9 strikes in a row and then 9 spare & 9 in the 10th frame.
Watching the results Tom Smallwood got with his new 14 lb ball, I am tempted to go from 15lb to 14lb myself. That will give my ball a touch more ball speed, and the one less pound doesn't seem to really affect the ball's impact. Will I suddenly bowl as well as Smallwood? Not even close, lol. But it's definitely something I might try.
Smallwood's last ball looked great , if I would have been watching live, seeing the 2 pins the 4 and 8 would've made me wanna kick'em down . Also felt bad for Anderson, bowling a great game , only to bowl someone having an even better one , you'll probably see these 2 bowl each other many times
PbaBowling, That was a fantastic upload of the Pba Nearly Perfect that features the 4th Match of the 2024 Pba Playoffs. Also, Does Tom Smallwood have a couple of Years left when he turns 50 and Joins the Pba50 Tour?
Well, by "many", you must count THREE as many. He threw one ball high and had that lucky 4-pin carry, he threw a terrible ball that went high brooklyn and carried the 10 pin, and then that last ball, he hit his target but bounced the ball at the bottom of the swing, changing the ball's rotation so that it hit very light and he left the 2-8. All the othershots he made were dead flush. So I wouldn't say he got away with too much.

Nope

How is Tom Smallwood doing that?
By bowling very well. What kind of answer are you looking for, exactly?
Bonus for 300???
He got away with so many bad shots.
