Project Wingman takes the batshit insanity of Ace Combat and turns it up to 11. And instead of Belka, it's Crimson 1, who is probably the one who actually ate the Crazy Hamburger in Zero anyway. Made by Ace Combat fans, for Ace Combat fans.
Haven't yet seen any sign of a summary in the comments, so I figured I'd throw my hat into the ring. As Max0r explained, the birth of the Project Wingman universe can be traced to the eruption of Yellowstone and the consequential detonation of the entire Ring of Fire. Following the ensuing apocalypse, dubbed the "Calamity," humanity sees an eventual return to form, albeit with a few caveats; nations formed around the Ring of Fire become leaders in energy production thanks to the discovery of cordium - a highly volatile material, essentially uranium squared, that came about as a direct result of the prior Calamity - and everyone is looking to get a piece of that Pacific pie. We then see the formation of the Pacific Federation, which is basically the new United Nations but if it operated like the Galactic Empire. They coerce nations found along the Ring of Fire into joining their faction under the guise of bringing about peace and stability, then exploit the local resources for the benefit of core Federation states. An event of note is the attempted takeover of Oceania - PW's Australia - by a mercenary cabal, intended to create a nation for mercs, by mercs. Seeing this as a threat to their power, the Pacific Federation steps in and wipes them out, effectively ending any chance of a large mercenary faction rising to the same level as a global superpower. During the events of the game, we're in the year 432 AC (After Calamity, or Ace Combat if you're clever), playing as Monarch; an experienced mercenary fighter pilot leading the three-man Hitman squadron of the Sicario Mercenary Corp. Project Wingman opens with the end of a contract between a Federation state and Sicario, in which we're sent out to reclaim a stolen shipment of cordium. It's here that we're given an early demonstration of this resource's destructive capabilities, as when we're instead instructed to destroy our precious cargo, it goes off like a nuke. Immediately after our contract's completion, we're picked up by the nation of Cascadia - a country taking up the western coast of North America and a major exporter of cordium - as they initiate a civil war against the Federation. Unfortunately for them, the sheer number of resources at the Feds' disposal makes it a one-sided affair, and the Cascadian Independence Force is soon left with no other options than to hire mercenaries to try and even the odds. We then lead Hitman squadron to reclaim various assets and territories, taking control of Federation supply lines and knocking key factors down a peg; particularly the elite Peacekeeper team known as Crimson squadron. Their Cascadian turncoat leader, Crimson One, quickly develops an obsession over you and your party due to either repeatedly escaping their grasp or repeatedly bringing down members of his squadron, them being the best of the best and (supposedly) without equals. This all gets thrown out the window when, while the Federation's on the backfoot, Crimson team pulls their rank and orders several dozen cordium-fuelled strikes against the city that your squad is operating in. Note that this city is sitting right on top of the Ring of Fire. The resulting destruction immediately sets off all the untouched cordium underground in a chain reaction that destroys the entire Pacific coast for a second time, throwing both sides of the war for a loop as Calamity 2.0 sets in. We're forced to take a break for a few months as all factions wait for the Earth to settle down again. Once it's done, everyone is immediately at the Feds' throats because holy shit, they've literally started a second apocalypse. Crimson squadron then attempts to ambush you and Hitman squadron as payback for the losses they've incurred, though they only succeed in getting themselves all killed in the process. Some more time goes by before the Federation is pushed back to the occupied Cascadian capital, in which they attempt to make their last stand. Unfortunately for them, you, the player, have more than proven your own destructive capabilities - you're known as "the Demon Lord" to Federation forces - and are bringing the hurt down on them as they attempt to hold out. It doesn't last, however, and the Federation is almost pushed out of Cascadia before a ceasefire is declared by both factions. Not two minutes into this ceasefire does Crimson One reappear, now piloting an experimental cordium-powered Advanced Dominance Fighter that was commissioned by the Federation but forgotten in the chaos of the apocalypse. He then personally nukes his own country's capital city, causing countless deaths for everyone involved before proceeding to challenge you to a duel, now that literally every other fighter from both the CIF and Federation fleet are now out of play. Crimson One then beings to rant at you, blaming YOU for all the death and destruction - "if I had killed you over Yellowstone, I never would have lost all that I have!" He then laments the loss of his squadron and the destruction of Cascadia and its people, directly citing your continued existence as the cause. Only when you critically damage his plane does he appear to calm down, asking only for you to remember him when your own time comes, before his jet is consumed in a cordium/nuclear explosion. As a result of Crimson One's insubordination, the Federation is soon attacked from all sides as member states and would-be nations begin seceding from their agreements, shaken by both the second Calamity and the belief that the Federation had directly nuked Cascadia in the middle of a ceasefire. Mercenaries from across the globe soon make their way to the now-liberated Cascadia upon hearing of your feats and reception, turning it into a nation far more welcoming of them and their kind while the Pacific Federation struggles to retain what remains of their control over the world stage.
Wow you basically summed up the entire game bravo I already know the lore and story but reading that helped me understand this games lore and story much better thank you
It is the Year 432 of the After Calamity Era. Nearly five centuries have passed since the world was destroyed in a firestorm. A new era of plentiful resources, technological advancement, and peace is here where people are born, raised, and die. 3 months ago, the nation of Cascadia declared itself out of the Federation and began waging a war of independence against the Pacific Federation.
8:02 actually, something similar happens in PW. TWICE. Once against a trade hub that was about to be retaken by the Cascadians (Prospero) that the feds nuked, and a second time by a rogue Crimson 1 with a nuclear death plane, against the Cascadian capital (Presidia).
MS Pinball was my first game. Computer classes in elementary were such blasts because so many of my classmates would compete just to see who'd get the highest score.
By the way, there was a secret war in the 60s in the nation of Laos. Eventually it was revealed, but it lasted a while before that. It was a hidden extension of the Vietnam war, with US forces secretly stationed in Laos or going on patrols into that country to attack the Hochi Minn Trail (supply line used by Viet cong to get supplies from North Vietnam). For a long time, Nixon denied that US forces were in Laos, but later was forced to admit there were and to withdraw them. Of course you can't keep the fact that someone has bombs going off around them from the person being bombed, but a remote/obscure enough location could have a small conflict going for a bit before others knew about it (how many people could point at Afghanistan on a map before and even after 9/11?).
Well if Kit does ever get around to playing this first and foremost he's gotta record it somehow and second he's gotta use two seater planes so he doesn't miss out on Prez
The supervolcano would not be as bad as you say, but I would stay out of Denver, CO and that region. Denver would probably be buried under ash, and people who were stuck there would ultimately suffocate probably. The blast wave from the actual explosive eruption would probably be felt on the Eastern seaboard.
i remember Project Wingman fans and devs saying "this is not Ace Combat, its nothing like it" like DUDE, literally EVERYTHING feels Ace Combat in this game lol, even the dialogues are literally made the same way and the music uses similar vibes its basically Ace Combat on steroids because it has even more ridiculous stuff and the story makes less sense
Microsoft Pinball: CHRIST that makes me feel old... 7:45: DID I HEAR THAT CORRECTLY!? LIEUTENANT EVA! GET MY THE CHRONOSPHERE SO I CAN MEET THESE GUYS!
The funny thing is if the San Andreas fault was to go off than it could also set of yellow stone this having 2 catastrophic disasters happening congruently
I think "affecting the majority of the US" is a massive understatement if we are talking about a supervolcano like Yellowstone. We're talking more like you might not have a country anymore when the fumes settle.
Obvious spoilers in this comment So Project Wingman is literally an indie game where it takes place in our word in the year 432 AC (After Calamity) when Yellowstone erupts and collapsed all of human civilization. In the years after, the nations around the Pacific Ocean formed the Pacific Federation which is the UN, but much worse in which they in which regularly commit war crimes instead of real life where they are mocked for just watching the war crime. Weirdly enough, Cascadia is also home to a local religion in which they revere the Dust Mother who is apparently a savior (I haven't looked at the info page in the game in a long while, so I may be wrong). This game takes place entirely in Cascadia (Which is the entire West Coast of the US) except for the 1st and 13th missions which takes place in The Creole Republic (Louisiana) and the Kingdom of Sawaiiki (Hawaii which got bigger for some reason), in which Cascadia is waging a war for independence because they got taxed hard. The first half of the game is essentially just picking up the Cascadian Independence Force off of their feet and slowly wiping out the Federation out of Cascadia until Mission 10, where both sides quite literally send the entirety of their Air Forces against each other from the continuous escalation of force in which the Federation is trying to evacuate their most experienced ground forces. Canonically, all of those transports were shot down so it really cripples the Federation, especially when you destroy their Pacific fleet based in Sawaiiki in which hilariously enough, the local forces just back down when you literally just ask them to. In the last quarter of the game, the Federation or rather Crimson 1 deliberately orders Prospero (Seattle) to be nuked extremely hard to prevent your side from winning which didn't work for some reason and straight up caused the entire Ring of Fire to erupt from all of the latent Cordium underground causing a literal second apocalypse. Everyone somehow regrouped from that and beat the Federation out of the Cascadian capital of Presidia (Los Angeles), in which Crimson 1 nukes it again and everyone canonically somehow survives both nukings except for one person which makes me question the effectiveness of Cordium as weapons in this world. It is also noted later in a bonus note, that the rebels commit war crimes against Federation soldiers because of the second nuking and that all the Federation states consequently seceded from the Federation from the aforementioned nuking of LA and the game generally ends on a depressing note saying that the war was won and the the deal will be honored even though the bonus ending invalidates that.
