  • This is the third video in a series about Synchronous Counters & Sequential Circuits. It is an example that runs through how to build a 4-bit synchronous counter that counts from 0 to 15 using JK flip flops.
Please feel free to run through the example with us on paper! We encourage you to pause the video at anytime to first attempt a part before seeing how to work it out. Good luck!

Thanks so much @James Trombadore. Your video helped me so much. My favorite part was when the way the K-Map is filled was explained. If have spent a lot of days trying to figure that out. I appreciated your work. Thank you.

hey bro, firstly thanks your video but i have a little bit problem how to build synchronous counter that 1-3-2-4-5-7-6-8-9-11-1-3-2-4-5-7-6....and i must use 1 for others?

You just need to change the next state of each value in the counter to reflect what you counter will do. For your sequence have the next state (Qa+1,Qb+1,Qc+1,Qd+1) for 1 be 3 rather than 2. If you change the next states to resemble the counter you want to build and then apply the same method for building the J-K flip flop columbs you should come up with the correct logic for the counter you want.

Also for numbers that are not in your squece (like 10, 12, 13, 14 or 15), simply have their next state be 1 so that if the counter every comes across those value at the beginning the counter will just jump to the beginning of the counter.

Look at my video for an even-down-counter, it will better explain how to manage non sequential counting sequences ua-cam.com/video/BwNTwR1Xcd4/v-deo.html

There is a mistake when present state is 0111 then next state is 1000 in this case both ja and ka will be one
