My son and I love watching your coverage of these. Norm, you really do your research, and conduct great interviews with experts - one of my favorite things to listen to/watch on Tested.
Err not really, this build would allow me to connect a camera and AI to an Rpi inside the body, James's whilst awesome relies on magnets to hold the head on which means we need another power supply and processing unit to add cameras and rpi
To all the people talking about the other guy's BB8... Seriously? Why are you trying to bring someone up by putting another person down. "So and sos is way better!" "that other dude's moves" people seem to have missed the entire point... this is a STATIC replica. Mike has already make fully-moving versions. And I'm sure the other fellow appreciates you using his name to put this guy down even though you clearly know nothing about this guy's work.
Brendan Chambers what i meant is i knew people are going to mention J.Bruton whenever there are bb8 videos. I've seen it before, surely it will happen again in future vids.. M.Senna's bb8 isn't bad, he's better than anyone who hasn't build a bb8, that's for sure..
+Brendan Chambers Actually, that's what happens when the fools over at Tested misrepresent facts. Burton's BB8 droids are all better than this one, even more impressive is how back then he didn't even quite know how the BB8 in the movie worked, yet he tried to make a moving one anyway.
James Burton never gave up on the full moving working version. he is on his third version of BB8 and making it better every time. I don't think he would settle for a static BB8.
Yeah Wyatt. Neither James nor I can figure out why people feel they have to take sides on UA-cam. We both are just trying to show people what we do in different ways. We are not using each other as a gauge for success. And although I am continuing development on my driving BB8, why do the people commenting here even care if I am or not? Thanks for your support and all the rest of the positive commenters support too!
The James Burton BB8's are clearly better for move and etc. But this one is better looking and finished. The heaven will be the fusion of this design with JB mechanicals.
1:48 I thought I saw an interview with Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, where they were talking about how BB-8 would be used between takes to the point they almost felt like he was real. So I guess they did have a fully working droid?
I can see how a stationary BB-8 would be a nice display; however, I would like to see someone build one with a good drive system. James Bruton has come the closest to get it right so far, but I think we still have a long way's to go.
I do not care how bb-88 looks or how accurate it is. I just enjoy how James Bruton engineers it and all the other projects he is working on. I love the technique first and the art second.
James Bruton's version is amazing functionally and clearly has a much greater degree of motion than this version (given that it can actually drive around!). I have to say that I prefer the finish and look of this version however.
Mike made a comment that he was going to spray a clear coat to protect the vinyl decals. If he has a look at the graphics on Franks bike he'll notice they have a protective layer on top to protect them which is applied after print and comes in various thicknesses. Anyone who does dirtbike graphics should be able to help
its great.... but why not cover a full function bb8. Like all the comments say. James Bruton version 3 bb8 is almost complete and from what I have seen the dialling in of the pids and feedback he has a very realistic moving full function bb8.
For the gyro, could you use a small push bike wheel like a 4 or 5yr old kids bike. And spin that up at the very base. Thst would work better than any purchased gyro
Why is everyone saying James Bruton's BB-8 is better? His fully painted MK 2 looks like pretty bad. And you can't compare his MK 3 yet, because it's not painted. It might look better when it's painted or it might look weird like his MK 2. If people are saying his is better because it moves, then they're forgetting that Mike made his version move, too.
It's not about how it looks (I have no problem with how xrobots' looks) it's about the functionality and the video series is about building and coding it not so much about the finished product.
+GEONE I think it's a bit unfair to compare Mike and James' BB-8's as they cater to different audiences. Mike is super detail oriented and makes his replicas very screen accurate, where as James doesn't care much about accuracy as much as he does exploring the mechanics and solving problems. One thing I notice about Mike (and find kinda irritating), is that he is very secretive about his solutions. He even says so himself in this video. Granted, we did get a look inside this time, but he keeps his moving replica mechanics under wraps. James, on the other hand, walks us through his entire build and provides resources on his site for anyone who wants to build along with him. I find that super interesting even if his replicas aren't all that clean looking.
+elfurioso I get that people would like to see the insides of my driving one, but I'm on version 4 and they don't work well in my opinion. Too many people would buy parts and find out they spent money on a design that does not work. This is an actual issue with the BB8 Builders group right now. The members are buying parts on drives that are not tested and do not work. On the R2 side all my work has been tested and therefore all my designs are released to that club. There is no one in that club that has provided designs and let anyone who wants to copy and sell them as they like. I have done this. I constantly have people over to explain the R2 build. Until my design is solid, I simply do not like to release it. It's an art form to me, like a painting.
Nice work on the elbow/servos mechanism. Still wanna see a fully funcional BB-8, though, if that's possible! I've seen James' (and commented on his channel, been following him for years now), but his isn't there yet. He convinced me on the necessity of the flywheel, but I don't really like that banana-shaped rail design, because it makes his BB-8 roll back and forth only, not in every direction, as (I believe) it should.
Hey guys. Does anyone know where to get such a basic sphere? The material should of course be somewhat durable, and a diameter of 50cm would be ideal. I've tried to get one for a while now, but I have some trouble finding something like that. At least here where I live (western Germany).
+Mujtaba Ibrahim Dang, but it's like you gotta Deed-pol your name just for the showbiz, sorry bruv. Kudos for getting endorsed Mujtuba!D All this typing of Gods and I was gonna do a burning bush joke. I have doubts it would work without being offensive.
really wish I had access to a shop to make one of these, pretty sure from my research that I have an entirely new drive train idea that will likely be far more stable then any out there. Even just to have someone take my idea and make it real would be great but I have no place, money or contacts to make that happen in any way.
+Cody Ward Yes! Unfortunately the panel for that is on the bottom side of my build. The build was done before the film. My future static build (lol, not even started) will make an attempt at that feature and have better body detail! Thanks for watching! :)
The silver part of the head isn't supposed to factor into the head rotation. It appears the screen model has a servo that rotates on top of that platter. I'm no expert, just an observation.
If you guys like droid builds, check out James Bruton at xRobots on youtube. He has 3 separate BB-8 build series all done at home without a fancy workshop. You'll like it!
An idea for cheaters: put this thing on normal wheels, make the shell frosted clear material and install pico projectors with wide angle lenses on the inside. That way you can project the illusion of a rolling sphere onto the static sphere. (Maybe with a darker material and high projection power you could even reduce the glowing apperiance.)
SO version 1 was nearly fully moving properly. BUT version 2 is completely static ???? Way to give up .. That is pointless. James Burton's one is apparently much better.
My son and I love watching your coverage of these. Norm, you really do your research, and conduct great interviews with experts - one of my favorite things to listen to/watch on Tested.
+Action Movie Kid this is so true, Norm is really great.
Norm does his research? I have to disagree, he gets nearly all of his facts very, very, very incorrect.
Norm sucks
I'm here for the James Bruton comments :) It drives and he shares the design files!
James Bruton's version is WAY better. He's 3D printing it. Look up his channel. Genius !
absolutly right
I commented the same. he is the best robot builder on youtube that I've seen.
Err not really, this build would allow me to connect a camera and AI to an Rpi inside the body, James's whilst awesome relies on magnets to hold the head on which means we need another power supply and processing unit to add cameras and rpi
This one doesn’t even move, only the head does something
ImpalerGaming you’re right
James Bruton's version is better to me tbh. but i will say this is pretty cool
+Cullen Tortoise Yea, they need to bring James on the show.
I agree completely his bb is amazing
+Cullen Tortoise This can't even drive, so kind of boring in my eyes.
+Cullen Tortoise James does amazing technical work but this guy does great stuff with the skinning/painting side
+Garneleaf Imagine the version if Mike did his finishing work on one of Jame's BB-8s!
James Bruton is the first thing that that comes to my mind when I see BB-8 projects.
I hope that he adds the lighter. For a static model it would work great.
The Static model is the only version that could do that!
BB-8 and a Motocross Bike in the same video!? AMAZING!!!
May the 4th be with you!!! :D
James Burton is love. James Burton is life.
yes!!!
I came here to say the same thing
his is much better than the ones in this video
+I paulbot me too!
+Ty Wood He is such a great guitarist.
i came here to just to see "james bruton's better" comment, i am not dissapointed.

Incredible!
Español
BB-8 will keep builders busy for years if not decades to come.
Also people do realize that he also made a driving bb8 not just James Burton right? Or did you completely miss that?
James Burton never gave up on the full moving working version.
he is on his third version of BB8 and making it better every time. I don't think he would settle for a static BB8.
+phixion. neither has this guy..........
+phixion. Mike is also on his third version of BB 8 and it will drive. Both James and Mike are also in the R2 Builders club.
Yeah Wyatt. Neither James nor I can figure out why people feel they have to take sides on UA-cam. We both are just trying to show people what we do in different ways. +TheMikeSenna because people are idiots actually
The James Burton BB8's are clearly better for move and etc. But this one is better looking and finished.
The heaven will be the fusion of this design with JB mechanicals.
This music video was amazing. Glo gang taking over 🔥
needs more lsd
The only thing Mike takes more serious than the BB8 is combing his hair
James Burton has made one check it out
+Mark Williams One? He has made 3 different iterations at this point :)
Why does Norm always look like he just came out from a shower... of oil.
+Jayee give the dude a break
+Kevin I have nothing against the guy.
Best BB8 model ever.
I love the design of that shop!
You guys HAVE to feature James Bruton's version it is on a whole other level.
Y'all over there looking at the bb-8 while im drooling over the sight of that dirt bike.
2:19 The sound of a guy trying really hard not to say "Taking a shit"
Simple and elegant mechanism-- not at all what I envisioned.
The spring thing was pretty smart
Nice bb8 love it
This was INSANELY helpful. Thanks guys!
I love mikes work.
He does great work.
James bruton has a really nice fully mobile one
Happy Star Wars Day, May the 4th be with you 🙌
I do not care how bb-88 looks or how accurate it is. I just enjoy how James Bruton engineers it and all the other projects he is working on. I love the technique first and the art second.
Hey everybody, It's Norm and Future Norm..."
I love BB-8, but Wall-E is awfully cute too. Hard to say which one i think Is the cutest.
James Bruton's version is amazing functionally and clearly has a much greater degree of motion than this version (given that it can actually drive around!). I have to say that I prefer the finish and look of this version however.

Techbuilder made one check it out, no 3D printer, just home materials and its awesome
How is the extra switch bank wired into the radio control? Is it an R2R replacing an analog channel or something more invasive?
For the gyro, could you use a small push bike wheel like a 4 or 5yr old kids bike. And spin that up at the very base. Thst would work better than any purchased gyro
I love his haircut, I can just imagine him pulling his hair when he has difficulty buying enriched Uranium
first time to watch seconds after its out
congrats your reflexes will be legendary some day 🙇
Awesome job, Senna! As per usual. ;)
He built this BB-8 Replica only months after transferring his consciousness into his Old Man Logan robot.
+GEONE I agree James Bruton's version is kinda shitty looking. His fully moving BB-8 is pretty cool, though. But not better than Mike's IMO.

Nobody is going to say that James's looks better. But functionally its way better, and its presented to us way better

James Bruton has built (and even still building a v3) a much more advanced versions !
Love him ;)
I had no idea that Wolverine was so smart!
Hey guys. Does anyone know where to get such a basic sphere? The material should of course be somewhat durable, and a diameter of 50cm would be ideal. I've tried to get one for a while now, but I have some trouble finding something like that. At least here where I live (western Germany).
awesome! I absolutely love robots!!
wonder if you can use RCS gyroscopes for the head
totally awesome!!
I feel like this is a lot less complex than Bruton's version 3.
+DarkJedi3000 It is less complex, particularly since this is a stationary model which only animates the head, lights, and sounds.
+DarkJedi3000 Well duh.
***** I just realized it was only for the head movement.
What happens to Adams Martian suit build
James Bruton, watch his bb8 build. dudes amazing. and his droid is wayy better than this.
+James Bruton (XRobots) oh god, you spotted me!!! love your builds. sorry for the mistake :)
Its decent. BUT nothing compares to the original
Cool video norm! But why was there a pack of guitar strings on the table? Were they used in the droid in some way?
really wish I had access to a shop to make one of these, pretty sure from my research that I have an entirely new drive train idea that will likely be far more stable then any out there. Even just to have someone take my idea and make it real would be great but I have no place, money or contacts to make that happen in any way.
Lighter thumbs-up or GTFO. I kid. Good job.
He needs to add that lol
any plans on building working parts that come out on the static model? ? As wouldn't be as hard opposing to the moving one.
+Frank Smith Yeah, it needs the lighter!
+Cody Ward excellent idea :-) that would've be so cool seeing working gadgets even his little grab arm coming out.
+Cody Ward Yes! Unfortunately the panel for that is on the bottom side of my build. The build was done before the film. My future static build (lol, not even started) will make an attempt at that feature and have better body detail! Thanks for watching! :)
TheMikeSenna That's awesome to hear! Still love this build. Excited to see the next one(s)
More mike!
happy star wars day
Feeling kind of conflicted. On one hand, it's amazing to see what's behind the magic. On the other, now I know what's behind the magic...
Thanks! Well done.
sooooo it doesn't move??
dude you guys should be building that mass production and sell them
You can hear the disappointment in Norm's voice that its not Adam next to him.
I found Norm a bit too gushing in this video. It's just the head. :-/
James Bruton ftw
I LOVE BB-8 SO NICE AND FUNNY
Edit sorry caps lock
I am going to make one, from where you bring the ball please help me, I search for long time 😔
Those are Heim joints connecting the shaft to the two servos.
The silver part of the head isn't supposed to factor into the head rotation. It appears the screen model has a servo that rotates on top of that platter.
I'm no expert, just an observation.
Naked BB8, should have been marked NSFW!
I love how he says you can put him on automatic mode if you're having a party. What a barrel of monkeys that would be.
james bruton check his version
static BB-8 = hoverboard with wheels
Is anyone still making these replica bb8 droids nowadays?
what's up with the dirtbike in the back?
If you guys like droid builds, check out James Bruton at xRobots on youtube. He has 3 separate BB-8 build series all done at home without a fancy workshop. You'll like it!
Missing the trousers and bananas.
Dude your Ironhead Studio vid is spreading like crazy online
Awesome
Mike, this is the version that needs a lighter thumbs-up.
I won;t be impressed until i see it giving a thumbs up with a lighter.
What are the cells he is using? They look like D's.
Adding to the frenzy. Great video. Please interview / bring James Burton of X Robots on your show! k thnx bai.
It's norms dad!
This is the BB8 from RimstarOrg
as cool as a static bb8 can be, i happen to prefer the head arm setup james has on his v2, and v3
I still do not get why people like the Jar Jar of droids.
Jar Jar is love, Jar Jar is life
May the 4th be with you.
this one is OK but James Burton made 3 really excellent ones
I saw you at morning Side elemantry school lol
"lost" the head? Or does he mean someone tried to nick it?
Probably fell off and rolled away
+Big_Adam_2050 He only means it fell off.
“May the 4th be with you.”
