- The Ocean to Ocean Gran Fondo is a legendary mass start event that traverses the Isthmus of Panama going from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific.
Being born in Panama, this was an emotional adventure for me to partake in... not to mention the physical challenge of the 68 miles and 3500 feet of elevation gain.
In this video I share the raw ride footage I captured as well as some of thoughts along the way. I hope you enjoy it.

Brilliant Video - reminds me of our Cape Town Cycle Tour Gran Fondo - 109km right round the Cape Peninsula. No traffic, great vibe, breathtaking views and my annual race I do with my friends! I've seen more of my beautiful city on a bike, that a car! 😎❤

Hello Tracey , please give my regards to the producer of this awesome video. He did an awesome job but did not go over the logistics people living in the US must prepare for the event. I am from Panama and l have lodging , but what about getting your bicycle there? Did you guys pay extra airfare for the bicycles? Do you know if bicycle shops there rent them ahead of the event?

As a flatlander myself on the Gulf Coast of Texas, I feel your pain. We have zero hills where I live, even the smallest hills give me trouble.
Yes, the 1st few climbs are definitely an adjustment.

This is awesome I know you are not a climber, but just to cycle in the country you was born in is motivation enough to do all that elevation. The coach from Colombia is correct, you will never see true structured paceline group rides outside of south Florida

Well done Luis. I loved watching that ride. I too cramp alot, and I've started adding 1 tsp of salt to each bottle with my gatorade. That seems to have eliminated my cramping issues.

Nice! I did Panama Gran Fondo Cycling Challenge this February. I want to do Ocean to Ocean next year. There's a big cycling community in Ciudad de Panama - part of the road gets closed every day from 6 AM to 10 AM only for cyclists. From the Cinta Costera 3 bridge to Amador. Its perfect to stay over the winter when there's no rain :) Oh and I also had a lot of the guys on those "BMXs", props to them

Do the ships going through the Panama Canal pass under the Atlantic Bridge? Those mini velos are cool!
Yes, they do. More importantly, though, is that the bridge shortcuts the driving route to Colon, creating better access.

Curious what gear ratio was your bike? Id definitely would have brought my bike with easy gearing just to be safe on those climbs.
Yeah, it made quiet an impression. I ran 52/36 and an 11-29 12 speed

Do newer GoPros detect your location and auto adjust NTSC/PAL settings? I'm trying to understand why it would flicker when (I assume) you're using the same battery pack/voltage as back home.
My understanding is that there is an incompatibility with frequency setting for the US vs some areas. This tech stuff is not in my wheelhouse. But my GoPro session 4 at 1080 60 or my Insta360 x3 at 1080 60 did not do this... only the GoPro 11mini at 4k 60. Also, the problem seemed to go away as I moved from the Atlantic coast towards the Pacific coast. It's a mystery to me.

They did fine on the ride. I documented on the follow-up video. However, I may be having an issue with the rear wheel, which I will investigate and then report on it.👍🏾

Seems like an unusual amount of people with issues so early in the ride…odd.

You have to remember this ride was in Panana, many of the riders there do not have top of the line bikes and they do their best with what they have.
@@thedronescene7474 and riding their bikes for probably the first time since unpacking it from transport, etc. Probably a bunch of popped tubes from altitude, banging around, etc

For me it was totally unusual; most of them have experience riding here in Panama. I think that occurred because of bad road conditions in some places...
