There will never be another Chris Evert. Her record of winning at least 1 grand slam title for 13 straight years is, as Jack Nicklaus said, one of the finest achievements in sports. And the 125 straight on clay & going 34 straight Grand Slams without losing before the semi finals is amazing & will never be touched.
Even though this match was televised, tennis was not considered a major sport at that time. I did not see it live but I read about it in Sports Illustrated. I followed her career and the sport of tennis after that. I was not alone. The little Ice Maiden drew attention to the sport that it had never known. Not bad for a young girl from Florida. I think it is no exaggeration to say that Chris Evert did for tennis what Arnold Palmer did for golf. She made the sport as it is today.
A deep and abiding love affair. I think Chris Evert had the most perfect and beautiful strokes, the greatest ability to bring herself to do what she had to do when she had to do it more often than any other player, she rose to every occasion, and she left a professional legacy that will never be matched. The greatest? THE greatest. The most loved, in an enduring sense. I want to hear a lot more of Bud before it's too late!
Chris was an amazing teen; she has always been and she is now an amazing classy lady. The greatest female tennis player from 60s to 2019. Nobody as she was. And quite surely nobody will be better in the next years.
what is interesting is that she was not as unknown as Bud seems to suggest on the tour. Of course she was already dominating the Florida clay circuit. She had beat the year before, and had split two sets with King ( King then retired leaving Evert the win), Frankie Durr prior to this event, and had actually killed this same Eisel woman in another tournament earlier that year 6-0, 6-3 all on green clay. She had beat Wade on hard courts for Wightman cup and won the Eastern Grass Championships just the week before this match happened.
I'm here watching this amazing 1971 Open because it's the year 2013 and Chis who's ever and always a class act agreed that Serena Williams is the best to ever play the game.
The serve was just how the rally got started for CE. Most high school freshman girls have better serves. Also, notice how she tosses the ball behind her if her first serve goes in. Amazing
I can't figure this out, at the 9:12 mark there's a screen shot saying "1971 US Open, second round", then under that it says Sept. 4, 1974. ????HUH????
Jordan Spieth wasn’t the first to make a comeback like tis if going for the lines. Cal Ripken wasn’t the first to have “airs” or call the shots. Drew Brees wasn’t the first to hit those short angles or the post.
ummm...someone could do research maybe me....but ...chrissie does have i believe almost as many grass court titles at gs...as martina...remember...the us open and australian were grass for awhile????

Chris Evert was my first crush, she was ten years older when I first saw images of her playing tennis. No wonder people were taken with her....

I couldn't agree more, Chris set the standard for all the rest! It suddenly became hip to like tennis!
I remember playing with wooden racquets. Sweet spot was the size of a quarter.😒
a brilliant post, thank you
Notice how loud they are grunting & screaming? ;)

That wicked witch Billie Jean comment was uncalled for! Today he would be on the line over it!
Billie Jean always used to call herself just like that! No big scandal at all.

All athletes can only be compared to their contemporaries .

Looks strange Chris holds two balls at first serve though she plays double back hand. When she stopped doing so ?
They never stop. It's a well known fact, whenever a woman has a chance to hold two balls, they go for it.
They were good because they had no competition.
Yes but she still had to win the match. She's a LEGEND.
