    forgot to mention the 1989 release of Faith No More's REAL THING and the impact it had to interest me in something other than poppy hair metal. I till to this day listen to a lot of "Hair Metal" btw...

    I was late teens when hair metal was big. I loved it!!! When grunge hit... I loved it as well!!! My young years was 70s and early 80s. So I guess I was never into "labels". But the metal years did shape my early guitar playing. There was no getting past it. If you were a guitarist in the 80s, you gravitated to it, or performed it for the checks in the later stages of hair metal. And then thrash became my biggest thing right before grunge. The thrash band that did it for me was Testament aound 86. Great video Brian!!! Brought back some great memories. Go BOSTON BRUINS!!! 🍻🤟

      haha.. bruins will go a lot farther than the Hawks will this season, that's for sure. I did forget to mention Testament (they got some MTV play) and also Helloween for other styles that were pulling my ears away from the hair metal scene that was starting to get boring for me. Good music will live forever.

      watching the 80's go from the nu wave early 80s to metal and then go into the 90's alternative was an amazing time for rock music. We will sadly never see it again.

    I just did a similar show. You can't blame Kurt for killing HM. MTV and radio said hair metal is out, grunge is in and the mainstream followed.

    • @BriansFunHouse

      very true. Kurt was just a guy paying music that the media exploded as they were looking for the next thing to sell to the kids that were turning away from over commercialized metal at the time...

    I've always been into Glam, Thrash, Black metal, Death metal, etc.
    I'm 55 and still have long black hair, wear makeup and boots, piercings, rings, chains, etc.
    I never stopped playing music or let my love for various musical styles die (regardless of opinion or popularity)
    To me music is eternal and fits in any decade. Trends are for those with herd mentality. It's simple to make up your own mind and like what your brain is naturally stimulated by. My record, CD, cassette collection is at well over 10,000 and counting. Mostly glam/hair metal, Death and Black Metal and Thrash but also jazz, horror soundtrack, blues, 70s rock, disco, deathrock, punk, gothic. I'll never stop until death. I've been in numerous bands too (Willow Wisp, Astrovamps, Salems Lott) and currently play in Post Mortem Superstar and Black Heroin Gallery. All because of getting into Kiss in 1977😅
    Music is truly the fountain of youth. Oh, and the obligatory virgin's blood ❤

      Yup, tons of great music out there in many genres. I'm right behind ya at 52. Love catchy glam, love heavy industrial..but for the life of me I can't find any virgins around town.

    Another thing that took my attention is: You name "Journey" as one of the classic rock bands while putting Tesla under the "hair metal" category; in reality Tesla sounds more like Classic Rock of Humble Pie and The Rolling Stones than the corporate, polished soft rock songs of Journey. Corporate Rock Radio does this too, as they want to target a certain demographic to sell ads more easily and they do this by lumping all the radio bands from an era together. Its not based on any objective musical criteria ; its only based on corporate greed. Its important to point this out as there are some people out there who think Hard Rock ceased to exist after 1982 and a thing called "Hair Metal" started. ( guess they forgot how Paul Stanley looked like in the 70s 😂 )

    • @BriansFunHouse
      @BriansFunHouse 5 місяців тому +1

      True that music gets lumped into categories. Easier at the time to digest things I guess. For sure Tesla had a more hard rock bluesy approach that the early- mid 80s pop hits of Journey. They have toured together recently oddly enough.

    I always wished for a tour with Poison opening for RATT. Can you envision the tour posters?? 😂
    I was a strange kid, I loved KISS, all the hair metal, plus lots of RUSH. I guess it depended on my mood (rocking out, KISS, Partying--Hair Metal, and deep thoughts with great musicianship...RUSH!
    ALSO.....I see your WVVX sticker...I remember Scott Loftus, etc....do you know of any archives out there of anything VVX?

      i wanted to see Y & T (another band that got lumped in but actually pre dated Hair Metal) open for Crue..but autograph came to open instead. I hve never seen Poison live (only liked their first record) but saw RATT in the mid 80's (bon jovi opened), and then again more recently on the last tour that had most of the original guys minus the drummer. I was also a type of person that would listen to whatever the mood fit me. Love rush and then i could put it simple 3 chord punk rock.. its all good rock and roll :)

    Def Leppard and Tesla weren't lumped into the 'hair scene'. "Hair Metal" is a derogatory grunge-era term for 80s Rock bands, meaning they have nothing to offer beyond bighair. Tesla is a Hard Rock band and Def Leppard is Arena Rock. If you like this music, using terms like 80s Hard Rock or 80s Glam Rock works better; people would understand what you mean and you wouldn't end up stigmatising any bands.

    • @BriansFunHouse
      @BriansFunHouse 5 місяців тому

      But they were. Look at any compilation at the time or now and you will see Tesla and Def Leppard songs right next to poison, crue etc... I agree they were different, but to the casual fan of pop metal, light metal, hair metal etc ..they were a part of that scene.

    • @LuchaLibertaria
      @LuchaLibertaria 5 місяців тому +1

      @@BriansFunHouse Yeah, in the 80s both Tesla and Def Leppard were lumped together as Hard Rock bands , and in Hard Rock compilations, you'd see everyone from Gary Moore to Rush to Tesla. However, music magazines would always mention Tesla represented Traditional Hard Rock while Poison represented the Glam Rock scene, just different styles under the Rock umbrella. There are "casual" music listeners who can't seperate Poison from WASP, or Def Leppard from Overkill; but then shouldn't we inform these people that there are different styles of rock music instead of lumping all the 80s bands under a stigmatising label ("hair bands") Just saying

    • @LuchaLibertaria
      @LuchaLibertaria 5 місяців тому

      @@BriansFunHouse Btw, the "hair metal compilations" you mention started to appear in the late 90s; in the post-grunge era when all 80s rock bands were stigmatised as lame, ridiculous 80s music you are only allowed to enjoy ironically as "hair band music".

    • @BriansFunHouse

      @@LuchaLibertaria i get it. to me the term hair bands was used more by the thrash bands to make fun of the lighter rocking L.a. guys in the mid 80's.. And of course it exploded s a term now to cover all those 80s bands. I usually say glam when i talk about those bands. It is kinda funny as we both know how much attention some of those guys spent on their hair and not writing the best of songs towards the end of the 80's. Nothing in music should be taken too seriously...it is supposed to be fun. Like youtube as well. I think the kids today think it is a positive term now anyways.

    • @LuchaLibertaria
      @LuchaLibertaria 5 місяців тому +2

      @@BriansFunHouse Thrash guys were using the term "poser" to make fun of glam bands, bands like Overkill and Anthrax themselves had bighair :) . You are absolutely right that there were some below average glam bands that cared more about their image, but then you can find those type of bands in every music movement from Gothic Rock to Nu-Metal to Industrial Metal.Terms like "Hair Metal" or "Hot Topic Metal" (to refer to 2000s metalcore bands) sound ridiculous and most people don't wanna associate with something that sounds ridiculous . When Glam Metal had a revival in the mid-2000s,these new bands were calling themselves "Sleaze Metal". Young kids don't think its a cool term and you can barely see anyone under 45 at 80s rock shows and festivals. (with the exception of GnR but then GnR shows are advertised as "rocknroll shows" not as "hair band shows" )
